Nice review. Thanks.
I had pro bought in November 2023 had a issue with stitch on side of jacket coming apart so returned to coltswold outdoor good service just replaced it very happy with it nice light and warm
Great, comprehensive, relatable review. Gives me a great sense of both jackets. Nice work.
Much appreciated!
I have both and the the microlight alpine is an amazing jacket. The electron feels like wearing a warm duvet but its a bit overkill for the uk i find. The microlight alpine is deceptively warm. Served me well!
I always check out jacket videos and learn so much about them. I like this jacket. ℹ normally buy Eddie Bauer jackets because they’re really good and affordable 😊
Thanks. I'm new to all this and currently thinking I will opt for an Electron Pro. Initially I shunned down (vs synthetic fill) as I was fearful of being caught out in rain and effectively needing two jackets, ie plus a shell for really wet. I have a shell (30+ years old North Face Fantasy Ridge) but the Gore-T layer seems to be struggling as I get wet when it rains hard - maybe I can treat the surface so outer layer doesn't become too saturated? I really like my old shell 'cus it has lots of good sized storage pockets, that modern jackets seem to shun.
I came to this via consideration of a Rab Valiance (waterproof coating and no stitch holes). Initially it seemed a perfect option. Then I saw it's cousin, the Reliance. I then thought it was effectiely a much better Valiance so started to think that I wanted that. But never having lived with down and doing more research started to realise that I'd only ever be able to wear it for 3 months (max) plus the odd unseasonably cold day, when I wasn't being too active. Even then, lower breathability (esp. in high humidity) with any exertion, would likely see me sweat heavily and spoil (wet and clump) the down fill from the inside (nasty). So in conclusion I wanted to prioritise lower weight but good warmth, smallish packability and versatility. My current thinking is to use my old shell (re-treated) for summer evenings, and better spring or autumn conditions. Switching to Electron when needing more warmth when also dry, then using Electron plus my old NF shell in colder, wetter conditions. Not quite as nice as one Resolution jkt on the coldest of days, but considerably more usable year round.
When you were discussing the warmth of the jackets and the point at which you felt the cold, what layers did you have on at the time?
I was just wearing a sun hoody underneath. This is my standard for testing these jackets as it gives me a baseline. Of course these could go further down in temp if you add additional layers underneath.
Rab made amazing down jackets and parkas. However, you need to be tall and slim to wear it well. I had an opportunity to buy 12 down jackets and parkas from a local retailer to test out. I keep the Rab Positron Pro (medium) and Zero-G (large), but they are all great. I just can't fit into them comfortably. They recently released the new Mythic G, Mythic Ultra, and Mythic Alpine. They all look amazing and they might be cut for an athletic body. However, those prioritize weight and warmth, so not great for city usage.
I currently use Arc'teryx Thorium, Cerium LT, and Patagonia down sweaters, so to say that Rab jackets are better says a lot.
I purchased the Rab Micro light jacket last year and in size small and found this jacket to be lacking in down and overall general warmth. I specifically got this jacket as a lightweight backcountry ski touring jacket to be worn under a Gore Tex shell etc. I used it while skiing in the Lyngen Alps in Norway last year and then when doing the Ortler ski tour in northern Italy. I personally feel that this isn’t the best jacket for winter use but more suitable for spring or Autumn or general use. This jacket definitely has its place but it needs a little more refinement. I feel Rab should consider incorporating some flexibility into the waist like used in the cuffs of this jacket, as the waist tends to be a little on the narrow side and therefore restrictive . A little bit more down would also go a long way.
I do like the Gore Tex Infinium used on the outer shell of this Jacket as it does provide a workable shower proof coating.
Would the electron pro fit under a hard shell? For the super super windy or snowy days?
@@HenryHHHz14 you would probably need to size up a bit for your shell as the electron pro is a bit bulky
I have 2 electron pro jackets and I wear them under my tab goretex shell no problem, both are medium sized and it wasn't stuffed under.
If you can you'll probably want to remove under layers as with a goretex shell I was really warm Even though I was in -10°c!
which one would you say is better between the electron pro and the down sweater hoody
Have both..love both..in medium..definitely electron has a slimmer cut and microlight has a boxier look
Is the electron longer than the microlight? I’m tall and thin and longer is better for me….
@@occamsrazor000 electron is longer and also slimer compared to microlight
@@hectorvelez79 Thanks a lot, appreciated!
can you tell how tall are you? you said electron has slimmer cut can you wear hoody comfortably under electron or only thin t-shirt?
@@bronek7729 that would depend on your body type, I am 1.78 meters tall, but broad back, and I would not wear a hoody underneath, but I would wear thin flece
The Rab Microlight for me is a little problematic. The low quality down, in fill power ADD in ratio of down to feathers, is such a letdown. It also leaks feathers like no other down jacket I’ve owned. Hard to say why, perhaps simply due to the high feather content.
Wow. I have had two and neither leaked a single feather. That is strange!
@@ironix1 mine leaked but then again it was full of holes:D
I agree on the feather Leaking but it does the Job i havent Tested it in alpine condition (will this Winter ) but so far im happy with the warmth of the jacket (sorry for my Bad english)
I just brought the microlight and tried it out in the UK with just a t-shirt underneath in Autumn weather , I found it cold even at 10c/50f .I know it's supposed to be part of a layered system but I do like to be able to go out for a walk and not be layered up with all the extra cost and washing for that reason I'm selling it and trying the electron.I want to add I think the sizing of the microlight changed , I brought a 2022 from eBay xl and it was a really nice slim fit but damaged ,then brought a new 2024 and it was very baggy for an XL I think they changed it to accommodate layers.
@@rich3222 if you get cold easily the electron pro is the one to get.
looking at these 2 options now - how have you found the electron? Ideally I want a jacket to wear with just a t shirt in UK winter.
Are the sleeves for the electron pro a bit longer or would you say they’re the same length?
the electron pro sleeves are a bit longer and have articulated elbows to allow to reach for holds with out the sleeves running up your arms
@@BackcountryRenegade thank you! I know what size to get now.
What red is this electron pro ? It doesn’t look like the Tuscany red that is available in Uk
The Alpine, as I bought it in a charity shop for 14 Euro in Ireland.
Awesome buy
im normally medium in RAbmicrolight is this the same for electron pro......what size did you opt for mate
id go with the same size
Is it my impression or both jackets seem still pretty bulky when compressed?
@@pavelio89 yes they both are a bit. Microlite a bit less
I had the original microlite and lived in it, fantastic jacket. However, the latest is poor, with low quality feather/down that’s still leaking over two years after purchasing.
Still leaking? I want to buy one but not sure after reading the comments about leaking feathers?
My problem with Rab down jackets is they cut the armpits way too high and constrictive in my normal men's medium. Their heavier, winter belay jackets fit well in a large, but that's worn over all of my layers. Yeah, the left-handed zipper is annoying. Rab needs to change that for the garments they ship to North America.
They are athletic cut. Insulation layers are meant to be close fitting to maximise thermal efficiency and because they often go under an additional shell/outer layer
Hello fantastic review... What's your height and chest size please...
im 5'7 140 lbs
@@BackcountryRenegade thank you much appreciated....
I have the Electron and it's way bigger (bulky) than the Microlite Alpine.
yep there is alot more fill so it will be bulkier
Is the sizing similar between the Electron Pro and Microlight? Thanks
its similar, but the microlite is a bit more trim. the electron is a tad more relaxed to allow for layering
@@BackcountryRenegade Thank you. I have a Large in the Electron Pro and it fits perfectly. One last question are the sleeve lengths the same on both garments?
@@weekendwarrior8334how tall are u
Good info. But I'm not sure they can be compared in a way there's a winner. They're made for different conditions and activities.
true, but thats the purpose of the vid, to show the differences for those who dont know, and if having to pick only one, then i give my opinion on which i would go with
@@BackcountryRenegade OK. But maybe I missed it but I didn't hear any mention of trail performance. Which is what these jackets are made for. And there, these are entirely different jackets. You're not hiking in the Electron unless it's in the teens or lower. And it's not living in most backpacking packs. Maybe your reviews are more geared to town use. And that's fine. It's your channel. But the Electron vs. an Arc' Thorium or the Microlight vs. an MH Ghost Whisper would have set up real comparisons for people who get their stuff in the dirt. But again, your channel.
@@teejay3272 nope, all reviews geared toward backpacking and trail use. You should check out my other vids where I do compare those.
@@BackcountryRenegade I'm talking about this one dude. Look. If you ask for comments and then get a little bent when they're not hugs maybe you shouldn't ask for comments. Have a good one dude and good luck with the channel.
@@teejay3272 haha not bent at all, no need to read into that, i appreciate feedback. I feel this is a good comparison even though they are for different uses, doesnt mean one cant compare and educate especially when people asked for this one. It is to educate those on what are the difference between the two. Im sorry you dont think its a good comparison, your opinion thats fine. Thats' why i compare alot of different ones, and maybe there will be a better comparison down the road, because of your comment.
