Mary Oliver's book is number one, as far as I am concerned. I learned poetry in the 60's and am relearning it in the (roaring) 20's, both as a connoisseur and as a practitioner (I spelled both of those words wrong).

Me too! I'm such a fan of it! That's great! What are the other ways you're relearning poetry?

Kaye Spivey Several things come to mind. One, reading poetry widely from Dante onward through Hopkins, Eliot, Stevens, people I recall that I liked in 1968. Also Gioia and Oliver, of course, down to current issues of Southern Poetry Review, Poetry, etc. Two, reading prose that is musical and transcendent by authors such as Mark Helprin, Chesterton, Diane Ackerman’s A Natural History of the Senses, and a few others. This is valuable and a huge joy to do. Three, writing poetry and short prose. I am also working on a Speculative Fiction book titled Lunar Prep (building men on the Moon). For instruction, Oliver and Rosenthal’s The Poet’s Art. Oh, and listening to people like you...!

    Ohhhhh i so needed this.
I used a Poetry Handbook in college! It was such a great way to understand the parts of a poem.

You did? Omg it has quickly become my favorite craft book! Everything is so clear and so we'll explained without talking down to you. :) Did you use any other interesting craft books in college?

Kaye Spivey yes! Here’s a list:
      1. Sophomore year of undergrad: The Poet’s Companion. This book is so fun! It has great prompts in it to help demostrare different poetic techniques.
      2. An Introduction to Poetry: XJ Kennedy and Dana Gioia. Honestly, I don’t remember much of this book lol. It was a grad school text book.
      3. Towards the Open Field. This is a collection of essays by poets about poetry. This was another grad school read and I actually quite enjoyed it. It’s less about craft and more at about the idea of poetry as a genre.

I’m a little more than 1/2 way through The Triggering Town and can’t see why so many people recommend this book. The nuts and bolts chapter is next. Perhaps that’s the draw.
Just picked up two of Oliver’s books. The handbook and Rules for the Dance.
My interest is in sounds of words and how they are grouped in lines of dialogue for stage plays. Do any you’ve recommended have a focus on this?
May take a look at Fry’s book.

I was never all that focused on stage plays, so I don't own any good books with advice specifically for that. There has to be someone who has written a study of Shakespeare that would expand on that exact interest of yours though. Shakespeare is still considered the master for a reason and the poetic nature of his plays is widely researched.

Hello there! I adore and truly enjoy your videos, especially the ones with poetry. Nevertheless, what are some of your top picks for poetry books that are enjoyable to read? Because I'd like to read, study, and find more poets and poems. I did find your books interesting, though, so I do want to get them. That's it. I want to thank you for creating these videos; they are really helpful. Stay safe, take care, and God Bless you.

Omg thank you! 😁 There are a ton of poetry books that are fun to read, but that might depend on your definition of enjoyable. There are easy to read poetry books with heavy subjects and there are more complex books with lighter subjects. There's also different lengths. What kind of poetry books are you looking for? Some of my all-time favorites that I've reread are The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo, On the Bus with Rosa Parks by Rita Dove, All-American Poem by Matthew Dickman, Why God is a Woman by Non Andrews, No Matter the Wreckage by Sarah Kay... But my tastes might be different from yours. 😅

@@KayeSpivey I see, I'll definitely check out your recommendations especially, No Matter the Wreckage by Sara Kay, she is an amazing poet and performer! My favorite from her is probably "When Love Arrives" and the performance with her and Phil Kaye is truly phenomenal! As of right now, poems that I really enjoy are the ones that pull my heartstrings, the one that make you emotional, sentimental, and uplifting poems.

Have you read Diane Lockward's poetry handbooks... what are your views about them?

I read it nearly 20 years ago, and thought it was a great introduction. I learned a lot about form, and the exercises helped me get into writing more.

Hi, Kaye. I'm new to your channel. I'm happy to find your channel as my research on channel that review poetry. I have just published my 4th poetry book and I'd love the process of getting it reviewed on your channel. What's the process like, do I need to feel a form or something? I'd appreciate your response, thank you.
    Peter.

Congratulations on your newest collection! As for reviews... It really isn't so much a process. XD I'm not great at getting around to reading things people send me in a timely manner and I can't guarantee I would review your book in a video although I can promise to write a Goodreads and Amazon review when I get to reading it. I can't promise any kind of timeline for that though. If that works for you, you can reach out to me at my email which is Kaye Spivey at outlook. If you're hoping for something more guaranteed or timely I may just not be a good match.

In Mary Oliver’s book, did she include actual poems in the book to analyse?

    • @KayeSpivey
      @KayeSpivey  3 года назад +2

There were a few, but that definitely isn't the focus of that one.
