- It seems like once a driver announces their retirement, the timer is set to see how long it will take before they eventually return in one shape or another. Sure, not every driver comes back from retirement, but as we will see in this video, it happens more often than not, So put down that retirement cake, because we are about to dive into the history of drivers who eventually returned after they planned to stay away. This is a list of drivers who “retired from NASCAR Racing.”

Moral of the story: be like James Hylton. If you're gonna go back, do it for the love of it. Great vid.
I like to think that’s what they all do. They don’t come back because they want to win, they come back because they love racing. Or because they want to help out a friend.
I think Harvick had the potential to win a few more races, it's just the falloff of Stewart-Haas holding him back.
Harvick didn't slow down, unfortunately his team did.
And now they're rumoured to be completely shutting down
preece deserves better, I was iffy when I heard he signed with shr and it hasn't been fun watching that shit show go down. I hope he can find a full time truck or xfinity ride with a team that can actually give him what he needs, or goes back to modifieds. wouldn't mind seeing him back in a modified at my home track
Imagine Mark Martin comes back
I was gonna say, I feel like Mark is missing from this list, he really had one of the most successful returns of anyone ever
Don’t forget Greg Biffle ran a one off truck race for Kyle Bush in 2019 in Texas and won. And Jeff Gordon competed in the 2017 Rolex 24 at Daytona and he was a part of the overall win for that.
Even as a Matt Kenseth fan I will admit his year at Ganassi was bad
After Mark Martin "retired" from Roush, he came back a couple years later with Hendrick and very nearly won a championship in 2009
My goat David Ragan my favorite driver of all time is the definition of this
Said he retires in 2019 and he comes back part time since then and been very good in those part time starts
And I love seeing him on track such a nice and humble guy.
I got to meet him in person and got an autograph from him at a ford hauler at Kansas in 2017, one of the nicest guy, and probably most "heroic" drivers that raced out there. It's such a shame his career went the way it did cause I wouldn't have mind seeing Ragan winning on a weekly basis. That 2013 Talladega win was awesome as hell with his teammate Gilliland finishing second.
I still can’t believe James Hylton had only 2 career wins, considering he had 140 top fives, and 301 top tens.
In fact, Hylton had a total of 47 podium finishes, as he finished 2nd 18 times, and finished 3rd 27 times. He also finished 4th 56 times, and finished 5th 37 times.
Actually, ricky rudd did drive the 88 car before with Digard racing in 1981, replacing Darrell Waltrip
I'd say Matt Kenseth in 2018 was due to Roush being awful that year. 2020 was because of being out for over a year and no practicing
Ganassi didn't exactly have the best cars either
Was it Harry Gant or was it Cale Yarborough that ran the all star race at Charlotte back in the 2010's? I remember one of those two did but can't exactly remember
the racing bug truly never leaves you!
i think they should say "stepping down from full time competition" without saying 'retiring' but i get it theirs no hindsight in a difficult decision like that
The Kurt Busch way
Growing up a Stewart fan, I never got over the fact that Tony didn't get one more shot at the Daytona 500.
Even if he really was at the end of his time, part of me wants to see him come back just once.
racing is a lifestyle once ur in ur kinda in it for life
Jimmie Johnson is a part-time driver. He's a full-time co-owner of the team. Never heard of a part-time car owner.
if theres a part 2, does travis pastrana count for the 2023 daytona 500?
Jeff Gordon Finished 6th in his Final Full Time Start at Homestead in 2015 and in his Final Overall Start at Martinsville in 2016
PS: Today is My Birthday! 🎂
Happy birthday!
What makes an older driver not as good as they used to be? Slower reaction times? Less concentration? More fatigue? Or is it primarily the car/team?
As a newer NASCAR fan who’s become quite a big fan of Jimmie Johnson, I would love nothing more than to see him win one more time.
I don't think Kenseth had Any intention of returning. Unfortunately, when the 42 seat opened up, Ross was filling in for Ryan Newman, which left Ganassi without a driver. Probably wanted a driver who wasn't involved with any other obligations (x-finity or trucks) and willing to race the whole season.
What about Dale jr?
Wait, what about biffles truck win?
yeah, we get the other drivers lower series starts ignored except hylton. seems like favoritism to me. gotta be consistent
I would argue that Kenseth and Johnsons return should be swapped. Kenseth wasn't too far off where McMurray was in his final season. He had many top 20 finishes, which was good considering that Chevrolet was still catching up since their 2018 launch of the Camaro, where they were off pace. Johnson, even after all his considerations, should not be running near the back of the pack in every one-off he does. It's embarrassing how poorly he does in the 84 and should not be on track. He is a moving chicane and a moving trash can.
Yeah even as a Matt Kenseth fan I’ll admit his year at Ganassi was horrible
JIMMY
Harvick only qualifying for all star race. Larson will run the race.
