I was lucky enough to be there recently for a big swell...it's still a beautiful and amazing place. I can't imagine the point without the seawall but I can say being out there for a 3 meter swell is intense!
Back 6 years ago, I went to Lugar de Abaixo. It’s abandoned and the yaught Barbour is completely empty. No shops, nor restaurants neither
Such a shame. Ruined forever.
Visited last April and will go again later this month. Jardim could've benefitted from surf tourism for decades to come, but disinformation left them with a large seawall that goes nowhere indeed. I've walked over it back then without knowing the story. Obnoxious large structure with seemingly no real purpose, and maybe a couple of people taking a stroll. Waves were breaking nicely at 7-8 foot only 15 metres before the concrete blocks. Definitely still world class, but one mistake could send you for a hospital visit.

Madeira likes to be called the Pearl of the Atlantic. There's another place that should earn that name, in my opinion

Engineers and ocean are not friends. I don’t understand why locals were upset at save the waves for wanting to preserve it / educating.
Never appreciated by the nonsurfing public or developers , like having an Arnold Palmer designed golf coarse only totally natural - JUST > THERE ! - Then when its gone .... They never realized what an asset they had (the non surfers that is) ...
Same story every time. Non surfers have no idea what a good surf spot means to those who surf it. They think you can just surf anywhere and it's all the same.

I was there in late 1989 or 1988 for a few days,… didn't surf though.
25:03 surfers leaving their drug dosing needles on the beach…… yeah its a big problem us drug injecting surfers. How do they think were capable of surfing for hours on end? By Food and Water?
