  • The Banded Bay Cuckoo (Cacomantis sonneratii), also known as the Banded Bay Cuckoo, is a species of cuckoo found in parts of Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Belonging to the cuckoo family, Cuculidae, this bird is known for its distinctively patterned plumage and brood parasitic behavior.
Adult Banded Bay Cuckoos typically measure around 23 to 26 centimeters in length. They have a predominantly grayish-brown upperparts with prominent black and white barring on their back and wings. Their underparts are pale, often with subtle buff or rufous tones, and are also marked with black and white barring. The throat and breast may show more extensive barring compared to the belly.
Banded Bay Cuckoos inhabit a variety of habitats, including forests, woodlands, and scrublands. They are often found in dense vegetation, where they forage for insects, caterpillars, and other invertebrates, which they catch by gleaning from foliage or by making short flights from perches.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Banded Bay Cuckoos is their brood parasitic behavior. Instead of building their own nests or raising their own young, female Banded Bay Cuckoos lay their eggs in the nests of other bird species, such as sunbirds, bulbuls, or babblers. The host species then unwittingly incubates and raises the cuckoo chick alongside their own offspring.
While the Banded Bay Cuckoo is not considered globally threatened, it may face localized threats from habitat loss and degradation due to deforestation, logging, and agricultural expansion. Conservation efforts aimed at preserving and restoring suitable habitats are essential for ensuring the continued survival of this charismatic cuckoo species, which plays a unique role in the ecosystems of its range.
