punpun was genuinely a good person before everything happened. he was extremely sympathetic and felt genuine guilt with that volleyball dude. and just in general, he was a good kid who just wanted to help. i think the most simple contrast you can make between punpun and guts is that punpun was weak to his trauma and guts was strong to his.
i mean, just imagine having to go through everything punpun went through. you might not turn out as shitty as punpun, but you can understand him.

Something I’d like to add is that what separates Guts and Punpun is action and responsibility. Guts took action against those that hurt him and strives to protect people while Punpun pushes them away and then hurts those that he does foster a relationship with.
The point here is that you can’t allow yourself to become a victim and you gotta stand up for yourself and those that care about you. Another factor is purpose Guts has honed his craft in becoming a swordsman while Punpun threw away his purpose and work as a mangaka when he was troubled.
So while Guts and Punpun are broken protagonist Punpun is pathetic because of his self destructive actions when he could have chosen otherwise while Guts is admired because he shows human perseverance in body mind and soul as he overcomes demons from within and without.

    • @KingShadows1

Exactly. You get the point. It’s all about how each character reacted to the trauma which influence them to become the adult they are now. Guts chose to not inflict harm while PunPun did

I did finish goodnight PunPun. He didn’t experience a traditional sense of redemption. You have to ask yourself, did he truly find peace and did he make up for his mistakes? He clearly didn’t. Sure at the end we see some panels were he’s happy but we don’t explicitly get a clear resolution on what he’s doing with his life now, so we can’t clearly say he redeemed himself.

I like a lot the themes of this video and how it makes them so significant connections between the characters through the trauma they suffered, but I have to disagree and signal some things.
I believe you are putting Guts on a pedestal, I understand and agree that Guts are two ways to react to trauma, but you have painted a lot of self-destructive behaviors that Guts has as virtues and it isn't like that. Redemption for Guts never began until he came back for Casca and spoke to Godo, he himself never thought about his quest for vengeance as a way to be redeemed, he only did it to isolate himself and his pain in the same way Punpun does.
Guts never appreciated his loneliness, he only learned how to live with it. A lot of the skills he got were while being in the company of others, and the times he isolated himself were because of the same avoidance as punpun, directly or indirectly. He may have left the Hawks to find his own purpose but it only was because he didn't deemed himself worthy of being Griffith's friend, he left Casca after the eclipse as told before and he treats both the daughter of the slug count and Jill like an asshole.
It must be understood that Guts is human just as it is repeatedly reminded in his manga and no matter how strong he gets he will always be vulnerable to this horrible situations.
My take on this matter is that the key difference between both characters resides in how they perceive good and evil. It is important to understand this since is a theme touched in both mangas heavily.
Punpun explores a lot the saying "The path to hell is paved with good intentions" as we see how Punpun evolves from a kid who only wants good things for him and his fellows to someone swallowed in self-pitty, frustration and self centered desire to express pain. The reason for this is something I believe many overlook while reading Punpun, and it is very simple.
While Guts focused on surviving and showed the goodness of his heart when it got out of him, Punpun focused on being a good person.
And it is easily reflected on what the people that like him, that truly like him and wish the best for him say.
At the very end of the manga his father regrets not teaching Punpun to be a little more selfish. When Sachi meets him at his apartment for the first time she tells him to stop living swallowed in himself and the comfort he got in torturing himself for his past actions. She talks him about how she decided to leave the past, how she found purpose even in simplistic desires and how she doesn't care about what people think about her, and she did it because she KNEW that Punpun DOES care about what others think of him and deeply worries about how he can hurt others.
On the complete opposite side, Guts never burdened himself with the unecessary obligation of following "The righteous path", he never had the luxury to do so. This is showed explicitly during conviction arc and it is one of the main dynamics of his relationship with Farnese. While everyone was leading themselves to doom in the tower convinced that following the instructions of Mozgus blindly to be right would save them, Guts simply was straight forward. He fought all the obstacles in the way to save Casca and that's it. When surrounded by the spirits that consumed everyone he needed the help of those around him and he told Farnese without a second thought that she needed to stop praying and start acting to help herself.

One inaccuracy. It is not so much that Casca lost her memories than it is that, she had regressed mentally from the sheer shock, horror, and otherworldly influences from the Eclipse that, she could not longer trust men. She has her memories but they were sealed as a defense to keep herself alive. I would highly recommend finishing Berserk when possible. Because you're missing out on a large section of the journey Guts goes through to save Casca once again by restoring her mind. Otherwise, an interesting comparison video however, I feel the editing could improve a little more visually speaking. Since without context of the story to Berserk, connecting what is being spoken to the visuals don't fully match up. Especially when you skip over aspects to Berserk that feel wrong when listened to. Notably when you reference the vow Guts makes in the cave you completely omit not only the Beast of Darkness but you also fail to mention that Casca ran away.
One last point that I sort of disagree with and that is the reason Guts is alone. I feel you stopped reading a bit too soon to cover that topic regarding Guts' lonesome circumstance. If you reached Falcon of the Millennium War I think you would've worded and structured that segment a bit better. Otherwise you are not too far off of what does happen. I won't spoil it but, the hardship Guts goes through being alone are for a variety of reasons that was demonstrated quite well not just during Black Swordsman but also Lost Children. The reason is simple: Guts doesn't want to involve innocent people in his carnage if possible. Even during his darkest moments in Conviction the lengths he went to in order to not only protect but also end the life of a monster eventually created the most ambiguous and nefarious character in Berserk itself. The Beast of Darkness.
Do keep reading Berserk, you're only about half way there if this video is anything to go by. I feel the video did Guts a bit of a disservice given the complex nature of Berserk as a whole but I also feel like you did Good Night PunPun a disservice as well in spite of the fact I am not familiar with the story. I think for comparisons like this it would be wise to try and broaden as much of the characters as you can with better examples than what was used here. Otherwise I do not disagree with the video as a whole but a few elements that I am a bit too familiar with. Keep working on your editing; in scripts and video.

Amazing video an amazing deconstruction of the archetype; Will say, I feel you heavily overlooked the context of their situations overall. [After writing all this my god this was longer than I thought]
Punpun, born into modern day Japan and Guts in medieval fantasy. The worlds they live in greatly shaped the kind of people they are. Guts became a soldier and a swordsman well trained in combat while Punpun led a pretty average life until his 20s.
Also the relationships and the gender of the people that raped them also severely impacted their respective development. Donovan is a man within the unit who overpowered a 9 year old Guts; Midori is Punpun's Aunt-in-law and guilt tripped him (then 14 or 15) into letting himself get raped to make her feel better.
Guts got revenge on Donovan by getting him to fess up and he killed Gambino, although it didn't help him a lot it was something. Punpun couldn't do anything, he was an average teenager who was severely traumatized by his Aunt who called the experience a graduation gift. He couldn't do anything, out of fear of losing something important he had to bottle it up. Being raped by a woman (worse yet a; technically; family member) especially as a teen irreversibly damaged him it instilled helplessness and a desire for control.
I don't remember much of Berserk from that point specifically but after a while Punpun declared he was going to live alone and had a chat with his uncle Yuuichi who told him to make sure, no matter what, he needs to take responsibility for his actions, that he's in control of what he does with his life.
This is where I believe Punpun had his turning point; he had spent some time alone and even managed to get a pretty good friend group but those words stuck with him. So when Aiko came, he ran. He ran after her like the world was falling behind him. He was at rock bottom but he managed to bury down through it thanks to Aiko compounding his destructive behaviour because she's just as broken. Then came the pinnacle of his destruction, his ultimate desire for control, him reaping what he had sown and doing something to save Aiko. That's when the horns came he finally took control. But he had sown the most poisonous weed he could've imagined which he reaped in chapter 139.

i genuinely believe the end of punpun was the beginning to his road of redemption. or i want to believe so.
based on my own life, which, while not as murderous or death filled as punpun's, is pretty similar. i dont want to go into detail, but one night, i attempted to end my life. you can take a guess as to what happened lol. but for a few months, it was harder than before i tried, but failing is what made me realize that i had to get better, and it gave me the drive to do so. punpun at the end no longer appears with the little bird, nor the bullhorns, or the black head. in his attempt to take his life, he killed his "god" or the one that he believed was tormenting him for so long, his self doubt. after i almost died, i realized that i shouldnt take life so seriously. i believe he's reached that point at the end.
and if anyone's thinking about replying, i dont want you guys to start it off with a "sorry for your attempt" or anything like that. ive had enough of it lmfao. i dont tell anyone nowadays because i hate hearing their sympathy.

Tbh my childhood was very similar to punpuns and I did react violently often to interpersonal turmoil with friend and family. Violence was how I solved conflict for awhile. It’s why I’m estranged from everyone now. Even my internal monologue is rabid. All stemming from me feeling like that little kid with no power. The only thing we can do is do better and be better..even if we fall a little short

  • @sullivandmitry1416

I despise Punpun because it’s a story of characters who never go out of their ways to better or improve their lives but yet still get miracles given to them. Punpun, his uncle, his father, his aunt, they all get nice endings to their stories (mostly) despite putting no effort into themselves.
Punpun only ends up where he is because a woman who he managed to become friends with realized that he needed someone to take care of him and decided she would be the one. SHE decides to go out of her way to put effort into a man who barely could do the bare minimum unless told to do so, but he gets the happy ending.
It pissed me off so much reading the story because not once did I feel sympathetic for any of the main characters for any suffering they endured. They deserved worse endings because they never once tried to be better people.

    • @KingShadows1
      @KingShadows1  2 месяца назад +5

@@sullivandmitry1416 you’re statement I agree and disagree with! I do feel sympathies for characters like PunPun when he was a child, as he did get sexually abused but I don’t feel sympathy for him later because he did inflict that onto another person. I somewhat agree that PunPun was lucky to have Sachi and Aiko there for him but that just turned him into a bigger monster.
