Our local Volvo dealer wanted $1000.00 to do this job, $600 for the part and $400 for labor. I bought the part online for $300 (new genuine Volvo part too) and thanks to your video, saved $600. Very much appreciated this detailed instruction.
Just replacing my rear light. Your guide is invaluable. Thanks, Volvo, for making the replacement sooooooo complicated. So far, the European light has been the same as the US version.
Thanks very much for this video - just saved me about £700 as this gave me the confidence to tackle replacing the rear light on my 2020 UK model. Very minor differences only and took me around 3 hours start to finish (as a complete novice).
Thank you for making this video. As a new Volvo owner, this panel you took off was sitting with a huge gap at the top, so by watching you I was able to remove the panel and set it back in the correct way. You helped me a lot, many thanks again.
So remove half the interior and the rear bumper to change a tail light. Got it, thank you. I was pretty sure I wasn’t going to buy an XC90 before, but now I’m 100% certain.
Great video and great description, too. I backed a 2013 C70 into a 2020 XC60 and broke a taillight on each car. Ebay to the rescue! OEM taillight (used) for the C70 was $54. I bought a Chinese knockoff (it's DOT approved) for the XC6- and it was $156 new. Hope the weather is good this Saturday. Many thanks!
Fantastic video with clear close up photography. You did a great job in explaining every little detail. Compliments also on your very cute assistant. 😊
Yeah 😂 some cars you pull back the interior then have 3 bolts then it pops out but this one is crazy especially how the bumper has to come off and the trim by the back seats. I can’t imagine how much this would cost at the dealership
Thank you so much for this excellent video. Great camera work and instructions on how to replace a poorly designed feature of an otherwise great car. You saved me a lot of money so I owe you a pint or two. Cheers TC
Very helpful. I was going great until I dropped the nut extracted with the very long extension. Search for ages to find it but no luck. Moral: take particular care when removing the nut requiring long extension. Let's hope I can put in the replacement without dropping it into the depths!
Thanks for this. Had to change the rear light on my V90. A few little differences but broadly the same approach. This video helped loads, thanks for posting!
@@MightyMag69 Hi, I can't remember as I did this a year ago 🙂 I think the big difference is the location of fittings due to the body shape difference. You can work it out if you follow the video.
Video well done Followed each step. Saved $500 install from local dealer. Bought replacement on line for one third the cost. Looks identical and fits will. Hopefully works for a while. Thanks
Very clear and detailed instructions BUT…a lot of steps and work! Have to decide if I want to tackle it myself. One broken tab or lost bolt, and I have a problem! Thank you.
Well people have been quoted over $1,000 so that’s why I did it for a good friend 😂 I decided to make the video to help save people such an unexpected cost
Great video - what a horrible process to replace a rear light! Local repair shop could n’t (or did n’t want) to handle this. Volvo need to re-engineer the rear light fittings to make things easier. One point I would suggest adding - good idea to connect the light unit up and check all is in order before you start bolting everything together again? Just a thought.
Thanks for the video! Just did my 2018 drivers side. There were some subtle differences but you saved me a ton of time! Thanks for doing it! Oh, and saved me a ton of money!
Thanks for the video. I had to replace my tail light after I hit a lamppost. It took me 3 hours, but without your video I have no idea what would happend. Q: How did you find out how to do this? Do you have a job at a garage or demolision yard? Or did you do it once before, because I don't see any hesitation.
No problem at all. I’m glad I could help. I actually have a company doing car wraps and taking off body panels and lights is better to be able to work in the crevices for a nicer look and a lot of cars are built the same way. This one was a little complicated compared to most but I’ve taken apart Lamborghinis and Ferraris and I’ve seen plenty of cars with strange engineering 😂
Hello. Thank you for the video. My Volvo xc90 2016 has issue with the rear right taillight. The right turn signal not flash, but constantly light. The service man told me that I need new right taillight. Is it true?
I’m not sure exactly but I would think they might be similar. If you look up the taillight online, you might be able see if it looks like it goes behind the bumper and everything
Headlights and taillights for cars are glued and sealed together to prevent water and other contaminates from getting in and fogging them up or causing damage. I’ve never seen a car with removable lenses
Awesome video! We broke our rear tail light and was quite shocked by the quotation we got from the dealer. Usually we'd bite the bullet to keep everything 100% OEM but it was just so incredibly ridiculous for some plastic bits. My first car didn't cost me that much. LOL BTW - where did you get your light assembly from?
That’s what everyone has been saying. It’s crazy how expensive the repair would be. I got it off eBay and it was from a front end wrecked car so great condition and still oem
Good video, looking to do the same on the left side of a v90 due to water ingress causing the position light failing. This is a known issue with these and yet volvo dont give a sh*t. Their build quality is a disgrace in my opinion. I'd never buy another one.
Massive complication from Volvo - I need to this on a V90 and I am not sure it will be the same, easier or more difficult. Regardless is poor from Volvo: unnecessarily overcomplicated, I am disappointed!
this is the only video i could find for tail assembly removal for the SPA xc60 platform. gonna be tackling this in the next few weeks. cracked my left side backing into my apartment stall. perhaps you could add a part number for the right side (in case i crack the right side too...lol) btw, after providing my vin to my local dealership and confirming with other volvo online retailers, the left side tail lamp assembly part number is 31655358 (supercedes p.n. 31420431) for a 2019 xc60 t6 r-design. thanks for providing this helpful vid.

Yeah it’s crazy how much they want to charge, especially for the part. It’s kind of a hassle but worth all the savings lol. I’m glad I could help!
Amazing video. Saved us a fortune at the dealer. Really concise instructions. We managed to finish it in an hour. So grateful!

The fact that the bumper has to partially come off is a little ridiculous but overall it wasn’t a bad project

I think it's important to acknowledge that Volvo could not have made replacing its taillight any more complicated. Ridiculous amount of work.
