Oh if forgot to mention, besides Fiji, News Zealand and Australia, we are planning to travel to Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Philippines, Malaysia, and Singapore. Planning to stay at each country for a month. We would extend if we don't miss home yet, perhaps go back to our favorite country in Asia, and we wouldn't know that till we see all these countries to compare. Thanks in advance for your recommendations and tips.
Nice informative video, I miss South East Asia, back in 2005 I travelled through south East Asia, I remember Vietnam being so cheap, really hard to spend money, sounds like it’s still a bargain place to travel, some of the best food ever, and rich in culture
If you spent a year in Phuket you would triple plus your yearly cost. This place is no longer a bargain. I drink San Mig Light beer and a 12oz bottle out of 7/11 costs $1.28 per bottle. You can find deals on house rentals and electric bills aren't too expensive if you don't use the aircon all of the time. I rent a 3 bedroom, 2 bath house on a decent piece of land with many banana trees that backs onto a jungle for 12,000 baht a month. My electric bill averages $22 a month but my girlfriend and I don't like to sleep with the aircon on, fans work fine. We are close to the beach and it cools down nicely at night.
Very interesting video! You were able to travel very affordably, I like that. Hopefully we're able to travel again soon. I really want to go backpacking in SE Asia ☺️

@@RoryandCasey so I have my sights set on Burma, Thailand, Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam/Laos currently! 6 months, and then if all’s good financially I’d like to head to Oz/NZ! I’ve got a year to plan which is I guess the only good thing to come from the pandemic, saving money and research!
Quality content and very much needed information! Love it! I’m also planning a year long trip to SE Asia and I’m wondering how you bought your return ticket? Did you buy it before the start of your trip or did you buy it while you were travelling and if so how long in advance? ☺️
Great question! We started in Vietnam with a 3 month visa and no return or onwards ticket. Then through Laos and Cambodia we were travelling overland so they needed no evidence of onward travel. Then when we went to Thailand they needed evidence of onwards travel so we bought a bus ticket to Laos that we never used and instead extended our visa while we were there. We didn't buy to tickets back home to aus until about 3-4 weeks before it was time to come home.
Helloo! We’d love to travel by bus or train from Vietnam to Cambodia and Laos etc do you remember where did you book your tickets?? Also pls let me know how did you get the 3 month visa in Vietnam?
Our 3 month Visa we organised via the embassy before we left Australia. We had to send our passports away to them and they came back with the visa already inside and paid for. As for getting busses and trains, we relied heavily on our motorbike while we were in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos though we did catch a train in Vietnam once and we just bought our ticket at the train station. Same in Thailand we just went to local bus and train stations and bought our tickets on the spot. If you wanted to take some of the stress out you can buy tickets throughout southeast asia at 12go.asia but you'll pay a few $ more per ticket.
Brilliant Video, thank you! my boyfriend and I are looking to travel for a year and we have said we will try to save around double the amount you spent for a year in ££. We are looking to visit mostly South/central America and south east Asia. We’re also thinking about extending the trip if we’re able to with a working holiday visa in Aus and with what you’ve said I feel more confident it’s doable as we live on a budget mostly anyway 😊
Great video Bud! Me and my girlfriend are heading out in October indefinitely, so great to have a straightforward breakdown of rough costs for a couple. My hope was to do it for £1000 (British) a month so that sounds doable! Thanks man
@@RoryandCasey very rough plan starting in Bali and the local islands for 2 months, then Kuala Lumpur and malaysia for maybe a month or so then over to Thalianad for a while and eventually up the length of Vietnam. We're planning to travel fairly slow so I think it'll be doable :D
@@TomBedlammusic I found Malaysia to be more expensive than the other countries you mentioned. Just a heads up on that one... However, when I was in Malaysia I mostly stuck to the bigger cities like Kuala Lumpur area. I guess my point is that I found in Vietnam and Thailand, the bigger cities are not as expensive as the bigger cities in Malaysia.
Loved the video. Good information to know since we are planning to travel for a year around Asia when we retire in 5 years. This travel will include Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. Any tips which country we should go first and the best month to go? We do want to avoid monsoon seasons, we don't mind snow since we are used to it. I'm sure the cost will be different in five years. And do you have any countries that you highly recommend and why?
There's such a huge variation when it comes to flights depending on which country you want to go to and for how long. We mostly got around internally with our motorbike and busses. Internal Vietnamese flights could be as low as $30. To and from Australia was about $350 each way.
Great video mate! Just finished a year in Oz we fly to Bangkok 8th feb so 4 weeks from now looking to travel for around 3 months just wondering if you had any good itinerary ideas thinking maybe north Thailand , loas, Vietnam through through to Thai island 2 of us probably have around 7.5k usd. Thanks !!
Hi mate. We definitely loved the north of Thailand more than the south. The islands in Thailand were too commercial (except Koh Tao which we liked) and Phuket was horrible. For three across those countries I'd spend 4 weeks in the north of Thailand including a few days in Bangkok. 4 weeks in Vietnam including Ho Chi Minh for a few days, Hoi An for a few days, Phong Nha, Sapa, Mai Chau, HanGiang, Ban Gioc, Ha long bay. After that id spend no more than two weeks in Cambodia and Laos each. They were both ok but not the best unless you have your own transport and both were expensive to visit.
Also 7.5k would get you a lot in 3 months. We only spent like 1100 per month between two of us over a year. Add another 1000 on that and we would have been living like royalty
Thanks for watching! For the first 9 months of our trip we owned our own motorbike. We bought it in Hoi An in Vietnam and rode it all over Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos for about 14,000km and then we sold it in Hi Chi Minh city. There are hire companies in Vietnam that allow you to go into other countries as well (I think tiggit motorcycles was one I looked into). For us given how long we were there for and my mechanical knowledge it made a lot more sense for us to buy a cheap bike and resell it at the other end
Really good video mate! Really helpful. My girlfriend and I are planning a 12 monther as soon as the flights restart and borders open again. In addition to South East Asia we have Australia and New Zealand on the itinerary too. Would it be worth planning a trip into Tasmania and what budget would you suggest if so? We tend to travel similar to how you do as we are in our mid 30's so the shared dorms days are well and truly over! :-D
We love living in Tasmania. We are from the mainland originally but there is so much down here! There is a TON of natural beauty here with hikes, mountains, beaches, waterfalls and lakes. I can't get enough of it! Australia in general is tricky for budget. It's actually a pretty expensive place to travel. Hard to get rooms under $100 a night unless you want to sleep in a dorm and even then it can be pricey in cities. It's easy enough to hire or buy a cheap car. Food can be expensive if you eat out ( lunches for $10-20, coffee around $4-5).
Thank you for sharing this! I'm currently saving up for my trip and in about 12 months time I'll have a little over 17,000 Euro, which is about $20,000, so this video lifted a weight off my shoulders. My girlfriend will also have about 15,000 Euro. I dont know why I was so worried that 17k wasn't enough, I suppose I'm just so used to everything being so expensive in Ireland lol. Now let's just hope that we can actually travel again next year 😅
@@jasonwebb41 enjoy bro! I'm considering deferring my 4th year in college next year and going Asia for 6 months. Probably go in September and saving up money lifeguarding during the summer
@@fiachrabrowne8299 cheers :) I deferred my third year to work and I can't say I would do the sane if I had my way over lol. But if it makes sense for you then go for it. Where you gonna go in Asia?
Not exactly half. Thinks like bike costs and accommodation would still cost the same as one or two people but obviously costs like food would be split in two. If you are happy to live frugally then you could easily make that amount last. Most expensive things are always going to be food, alcohol and accommodation. Food and accommodation you can always cheap out on and you can just not drink if you need to save.
It depends on a few things to be fair. How do you like to travel? How many people and how much travel are you doing while you are there? Which countries are you going to? If I was to do it again I think I'd like about $75 a day for the two of us so we could afford to indulge a bit more than we did on this trip. Obviously if you're flying around a bit that can quickly eat into the budget. As a single you could easily do $30-40 a day if you were happy to be cheap, eat local and not drink a lot of alcohol.
That was the costs for both of us! Bear in mind though that some of the main costs would be the same whether it's one or two people particularly around the costs to run our motorcycle and the accommodation costs so you wouldn't be able to just have it for one person but others like our food and entertainment budgets you could just cut in half for one person.
Absolutely could have! Biggest saving would have been if we had have chosen dorms but honestly I'm too old and like my privacy too much 😂 still definitely on the cheap end of most travellers though!
Hi, I really enjoyed your video! Is this price breakdown between 2 of you? I went last year and ended up spending wayyyyy more money than I planned, but going back this summer with my girlfriend and want to do it way cheaper
