I love these old films because they rely more on the actors abilities to project their characters, and I feel that in this film Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce bring Holmes and Watson to life in the way Sir Arthur Conan Doyle meant them to be portrayed, in addition the sets and effects bring a sense of how Dartmoor was meant to be brought to life, and all done without the use CGI and other modern techniques which, whilst they are very clever and realistic, don’t quite have same qualities of setting the mood that you have with older films. The other thing that old films bring to life, for me, is that storytelling by the actors is more revealing than todays multiple plot and sub-plots that only serve to confuse the viewers to the point where they spoil the film which in turn makes the use of modern CGI and other effects more important so it holds the viewer in their seat and not walking out of the room or cinema (theatre) and wishing they had not bothered watching 👀. The length of films today are too long for me, if a story can’t be told in an hour or hour and a half I get bored with either nothing happening (just everyday activities or long journeys) or constant explosions and fighting. Thank you for uploading this gem of a film, and great quality as well, you have made this old man smile and very happy 😃. Thanks 🙏 again. 😀👍🇬🇧🏴🇺🇦🇬🇱🇵🇦
@ I am truly grateful that I am not the only person who thinks the way we do, obviously today’s films are what the younger generations want, and they aren’t all bad, just not the kind of films that I want to see, and I don’t think I will ever run out of films from the past “golden era” of cinema. Thanks for your reply and your thoughts, very much appreciated. 😀👍🇬🇧🏴
I agree totally the 59 version was great, but Peter Cushing also did a 1968 version that I think was just as good, it had a much more London foggy appeal to me the 68 version that is!!
I am unable to watch the film just listening to it. Doesn't make any difference to the story. Absolutely loved it
I listen to these old Sherlock Holmes movies while I'm going to sleep, no picture needed.
I love these black and white films can watch the repeats of the repeats.

Very well stated and I totally agree. I don't watch today's movies. They just don't have the fascinating qualities of older films.

The great Lionel Atwill is also in this, and DOESN'T play a bad guy! He's the doctor in the early scene in Holmes' office/residence.
I love this film absolutely brilliant
This type of film takes me away from the nightmare of Britain today.
Takes me away from the lowly horrors of America today
Love the story , the best version for me was the peter cushing one with christopher lee.
