I found one of these at an antique shop, someone had smashed all the keys at the same time so they jammed, but I got her back up and running like a dream, she looked older than this. It was also quite broken
This looks like an Underwood #3 upright typewriter. I had one once but I sold it. They are relatively easy to get the carriage off for cleaning. If you could ever get a hold of one, the Typewriter Bible by T. Monk deals a lot with what all the parts are called, where they go, and how they are adjusted. Not sure where to get one. Mine was given to me by a friend. I can tell you I have long been an Underwood fan. I have quite a few in my collection. Get one fixed up and you’ll have a typewriter that will outlive you.
I dusted off an Underwood I was given but don’t know how to tell it’s year or version. I’d like to get it restored. I live in California. I’m also missing the front cover and trying to find where to buy new ribbon
dusty guy: I recently bought a 1928, four bank, Underwood Standard Portable Typewriter. I found it in a junk shop. It was on the expensive side, but it still works perfectly. I got a free online copy of its owner's manual. But I haven't been able to find a copy of its SERVICE manual, even those that are for sale. Can you tell me where I can find one, either free or for sale? Maybe one, from a few years just prior to or just after 1928, would work. Can you tell me this too? I subscribed to your videos and channel recently, because of their high quality.
i have an old type writer, no way to identify it other than the serial number, but my best guess an underwood model 5. It doesnt work well, it can type but some parts dont work
"Don't have a name for a lotta them.... Gonna make them up as we go".
So true working on old stuff like this!
Haywire, fixin, doodad, whatnot ... love the vocabulary!

I've got one of them if I can find it and I'll send it to you
They look like little pianos inside

you can get a new ribbon on EBAY . Google repair places in california would be your best shot
Make sure you get 2 or at least 2 spools with ribbon, remove the ribbon off 1 spool for the take up wheel ,and save it for later in a cool dry place

Sounds like it some corroded parts from being left out in humid air. Last option would be to soak it down with wd40. Keep away from the platten
