In founding the Jupiter ensemble, the lutenist Thomas Dunford wanted to ‘rediscover the spirit of chamber music in the Baroque repertory. Jupiter operates in a kind of fraternity, as if we had always known each other . . . Vivaldi’s highly contrasted music demands precisely this natural response - almost like improvisation’. Lea Desandre speaks of a ‘search for colour and almost limitless inflections. This music was the “pop” of the eighteenth century’. The Franco-Italian mezzo, named ‘Révélation lyrique’ (vocal newcomer of the year) at the Victoires de la Musique Classique in 2017, performs arias from operas including Il Giustino, Juditha triumphans, Il Farnace and Griselda, as well as the famous ‘Cum dederit’ from the Nisi Dominus. The programme also includes four concertos, for lute in D major, for lute and violin, for bassoon in G minor and for cello in G minor. In addition to Thomas Dunford on lute, Peter Whelan on bassoon and the cellist Bruno Philippe, also a ‘Révélation’ at the Victoires de la Musique (2018), this flamboyant programme features Jean Rondeau on harpsichord and organ, Cecilia Bernardini and Louis Creac’h (violins), Jérôme Van Waerbeke (viola) and Douglas Balliett (double bass).

This is how baroque music needs to be performed. Unpretentious, just with passion.
You really do not understand Baroque or Baroque music if you say something like this
She is a musical phenomenon, along with her fellow impassioned artists.
Genial !!! Bravo !!!

Vivaldi: Ein musikalischer Ausdruckskünstler. "So etwas muß man erst einmal singen können". Vivald, eine musikalische Gnade Gottes.
I think that is the most electrifying classic piece I have ever listened to in my entire life.
If my energy begins to flag at work, I come to this piece. It is a musical double shot of expresso!
Yeah man! Hahaha
Listen to Vivald's Four Season
Strictly speaking, it isn't classic. It's baroque. But that's me being a pedant.
Similar pieces: Venti Turbini, Where Shall I Fly?, Agitata da Due Venti, Vo Solcando...
To everyone saying this is like hard rock... y'all got it backwards! Hard rock is like this!!!

Her diction and technique are absolutely flawless.

How wonderful to see emotions on the faces of all musicians.

Classical still have it, nowadays music in general meanings became a show off of what somebody can pretend to do. nothing special at all.
That's what I thought - they are all so animated and you just feel every note ! I had never heard this kind of opera and at first, I thought she was kidding. I've grown to love it :D

Instrumentalist here. This is one of the tightest ensembles out there. But Hell, I see why the singers get all the glory. Magnifico!
All these young musicians have such vitality. I am sure they perform this music as well today as it has ever been performed before.
"Roses are red; violets are blue; RUclips algorithm brought me here too" ... I and Like it !! Speechless and breathless: amazing performance. Grettings from Brasil !
This is by far my favourite rendition of Vivaldi’s powerful aria . Intense performance, no exaggerated acting and their energy is contagious. I’ve been using this masterpiece as an adrenaline shot for months now, thank you :”) oh and, viva Vivaldi !
And Lea doesn't distort her mouth.
I appreciate that they are in a casual setting. You rarely see this as not a super formal production.

----------------------------------------
Armatae face et anguibus
A caeco regno squallido
Furoris sociae barbari
Furiae venite ad nos.
Morte, flagello, stragibus

------------------------------------
Armed with fire and serpents
From the dark and dreadful kingdom
You mad, savage companions,
Furies come to us.
With death, the lash, and havoc
Teach us to avenge
The death of our leader
With our enraged feelings.
(Pietro Lignola)
Thx!
Wow, I really thought that it has something to do with religion and love, now I'm sad :(
that is so metal
That's weird, in Latin it's "squalidus" not "squallidus". Probably it's some kind of bastardization.
Funny, in my language we still use words like regno, squallido, morte, flagello and others
I always cry while watching and listening to this. So many emotions in musicians’ faces and their music. Also excellent performance. Always coming back to this video.
Me too, with exact same reasons!!
Lea, sei eccezionale.
A shot of adrenaline from XVIII century. Fantastic performance, both from Lea and all the players.
Damn this is a all-star orchestra. Rondeau on harpsichord and Phillipe on cello
And Thomas Dunford on Theorbo!
Arvo Part on violin
Darvin on Spinet
And some random guy on the viola. As usual :D
Theorbo? Let's say lute-shape guitar... Single strings on a archlute?

In fact, 300 years ago there was already all the musical material that we use today in light music. Tonality, structure, dramaturgy … there is nothing new today. And, if we are honest, this light music of Antonio Vivaldi was of way better quality than most of the musical pollution that terrorizes us today wherever we go and stand.
I’ve been long convinced that you could take basically anything by Vivaldi, Bach, Händel, the Haydn brothers, Mozart, Hummel, etc., change the instrumentation a bit, brand it as “new music,” and it would sell big time.
I just love watching top-notch ensembles like this one at work.
Mille sabords ! Quelle flamme !
Words fail to describe the joy that this amazing production brings to the soul. Congratulations all around, sublime singing and fantastic musicians. Their joy is infectious. Thank you.

Effing awesome! This is how that aria is supposed to be sung!
Since a long time ago I constantly listen to this version and is the first time I really pay attention to the video and I just realized Rondeau is on harpsichord. Great musicians all of them!

Grande voce Lea Desandre !!! bellissima.....a me entra dentro.....grazie !!!!!
Love it, especially the powerful end at 2:57 !
As someone who listens to a lot of metal, this sounds very metal to me. And not only just the music, but also the attitude. The singer is very much into it, she really puts all her heart, and you can also see all other musicians moving their heads with the 'beat'. The harpsichord guy also seems very much feeling the 'beat'.
Oh, and this last note, this hits hard in the guts.
This is really a great thing to be able to witness this kind of recordings. Thank you
i wish more classical musicians sang like this. Especially in art song
Could you recommend me some (good) metal songs as an introduction? I am really interested, but I am not gonna lie, it all sounds like screaming to me.
@@lweberl24 Glad to hear you are interested. Metal music is a very very broad genre and contains many many subgenre, some of them being rather 'easy-listening', some other being... Well, not easy-listening at all :)
As a very soft introduction, I can definitely recommend the band Nightwish, which has a huge orchestral aspect to the sound (most of the time the studio albums are recorded with a real orchestra)
Here is a good example ruclips.net/video/JYjIlHWBAVo/видео.html (I took the live version because I believe this singer did a better job for the end of the song)
Withing Temptation is really a classic in symphonic metal, e.g. this song ruclips.net/video/reGlno9aUpw/видео.html
Also, Epica ruclips.net/video/eNGzltK_tlc/видео.html
These bands are among the most famous and 'classics' for this particular genre, which is rather close to classical music, in my view. Also, these are rather 'soft', so it's not too big of a leap for you in the metal world. If you like those, there are hundreds of similar bands out there: After Forever, Delain, Unleash the Archers, Xandria, Kamelot, etc...
Also, those are not necessarily "good" in an objective sense, as I said metal is a very broad genre and those bands are only limited to one subgenre, which some metalheads might not appreciate. You might like it and find it good, or you might not.
I hope this helps!
Absolutely agree Hugo. I've got this in my playlist right alongside Behemoth and Jinjer.
Hugo Lehoux awesome Hugo! Thanks for taking your time to write this. I’ll certainly have a look
I am so f***ing in love with this album!
I love this woman!
Brava Lea !!!!
A beautifully triumph for Lea!! Bravo!!
Gorgeous ! bringing together the best young performers of baroque music of the moment!! For information, the ensemble of Thomas Dunford (the lutenist) is called Jupiter probably in homage to a very virtuoso piece by Forqueray senior, which "moves" a little in the same vein, especially when Jupiter triggers the lightning of his anger with great blows of triple quavers for the viola da gamba.
