Put some heat with a propane torch on the cylinder fins. The WD40 will boil and smoke but it helps it get to the rings Then try pushing on the piston with a block of wood about the same size as the bore. It has worked for me many times. Great little engines. Good luck.
Thanks Kevin, I'll do just that. The piston is too far down to get the crankshaft out so I can push the piston down. I'll have to push the piston out the top but that means pushing through the rust area. I have cleaned it some but I think your idea will help get it out.

I love those old B&S model 5s engines! I got a couple on the shelf in my shop awaiting restoration.
