I was there in 1981 -- Soviet times. Renovations were just starting. The Amber Room had only the tiniest chips of amber, but mostly damaged plaster. I'm glad I saw it that way because I was viewing actual history. The painted ceilings were original, though damaged. Also have noticed that everything valuable has been stripped or stolen in the Metros. Sure, they look nice, but they used to be glorious!

A lot of the baroque palaces in Russia and in other countries were designed by Italian and Swiss -Italian architects and artists - I think Rastrelli designed the Hermitage and the Winter Palace -a lot of Italian artists and music composers ended up in Russia working for rulers like Peter the Great, empress Elizabeth and Catherine the Great - one of the leading Venetian composers Gallupi when in Russia attempted to integrate Russian orthodox church music with western style baroque music. I have an old vinyl recording of one of galluppi's compositions in this style -it's in Russian (gospodar) but western baroque in musical style.

Ogni paese ha il suo di bello !! Amo il barocco e questo palazzo è stupendo !! Non si possono fare confronti !! Io abito a Roma di bellezza ci sono anche troppe !! Però so ammirare anche altri gioielli di altre nazioni e non si possono fare paragoni x me questo palazzo è stupendo mi piacerebbe visitarlo un domani !!
