The Let's Dance album gave us some astonishingly good pop songs. You often hear "diehard" Bowie fans criticise it but the album was as experimental for Bowie as anything he'd ever done, it introduced him to a world of new fans and, because it was such a commerical success, it allowed him to carry on creating and touring the more avant garde albums we'd come to expect from him. I don't get what's not to like.
I was reading the comments & when I read yours I had to look at the name I thought I posted it lol I'm not kidding. You are exactly right in what you say. So many don't realize that this phase was as critical as Ziggy. As a life long Bowie fan I hated Let's Dance at first but it remains a fave. That happened to Outside too which is a masterpiece in my eyes. Once Bowie said the 80's sucked for his musical journey people & critics had to echo that w/o thinking about the incredible songs he created like"Let's Dance", "Under Pressure", Cat People", "Absolute Beginners", "Loving The Alien" and he starred in Labyrinth. Do you produce music video etc?
Side two was a depressing noodlng nightmare demo sound .....the pop stuff sounded poppy but stiff It was like Bowie was channeling Barbera Stanwick and Reagan
The 'Let's Dance' album is great, even though it's not one of my favourites. Nile manages to make it special and magical through this short interview. Nile - about the creation of Let's Dance - said more or less like this: "When David and I were doing tons and tons of pre-promotion on the album that would become “Let’s Dance”, after we did all this research, David summed what this album was going to be, by a picture he found of Little Richard getting into a Cadillac. Little Richard was getting into his red drop-top Cadillac with his ‘do’ like that (leans forward) and he had a red suit, red Cadillac, bam, had the pomp, and David held it up and said: “ Nile, that’s rock ‘n’ roll.”
True. Simple but instantly recognizable.
He has that special touch to make decent pop songs into iconic hits.
