    In case you hadn't found out yet, the straps hanging down at the bottom are laryngophones (throat mics)

  • @GM572
    @GM572 6 лет назад +14

    The two bits laced inside the neck straps are larynx microphones. They are designed to strap snugly on your neck and they sense the vibration in your throat while you speak and turn them into a voice signal.
    The general idea is that inside an armored vehicle it would be to noisy to use regular microphones and instead, they opted for this easier option.

      Cheers but someone already mentioned that when the video first went live.

    Two years I use it as a T-72 tank driver.

    Retired US Abrams Tanker here. Crew intercom systems are one of the most important systems on the tank. Without it, you can't communicate with the most important person in the vehicle, the driver.

    Bought myself one of these for a tenner, a T72 version which has seen better days, currently replacing the padding from the inside, and restitching a new liner. Planning on using it for airsofting since it offers a bit more protection than an actual helmet.

    I've seen guys in forums either making an adapter or modifying the input jack for it to have compatibility with 3.5mm jacks and they seem to work quite fine

    Good video, I got myself a grey Polish tanker helmet similar to this one since the soviet ones were pretty expensive haha.

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  7 лет назад

      Does it have the same fake leather coating that falls off?

    • @mediumsoftdrink2866
      @mediumsoftdrink2866 7 лет назад +1

      Actually no, it seems to be something other than leather and it's in pretty pristine condition

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  7 лет назад +3

      I think some of them had a more cotton/acrylic style coating, those are probably better for not falling apart after a while.

  • @jarihohtari3953
    @jarihohtari3953 7 лет назад +7

    This is only like the soviet ones by the design. Your helmet is an East German copy of the soviet 70s model (4 protective combs). Yours is made from artificial leather which tends to dry and crumble with time, not by use, the Soviet version was always made from a very specific fireproof cloth, the same stuff they made some of their tanker oversuits with.

    good video, this looks awesome! btw there are some old left over centurion tanks in some places in israel from the 1973 war. i once sat inside one of them and when i
    .got up i knocked my head super hard, and it was painful as shit

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  7 лет назад

      There are some weird IDF modifications of some of the old tanks as well, I think there was a weird APC built onto the Centurions chassis.

    Was thinking of getting a PNW-57 (Soviet tank helmet with NV goggles that still work, designed for Eastern block tanks to my knowledge) with a D cell battery adapter and the original UV lamp as part of my SHTF kit and for fun, looks hard wearing and it's a lot more simple to run. Thoughts?

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  7 лет назад +4

      It will be very primitive IR but it sounds pretty cool, especially if you can find one at a sensible price with the battery adaptor.

    • @hands-on-eyes-on9029
      @hands-on-eyes-on9029 7 лет назад +1

      @Ysiko Hi Ysiko. I have a PNW 57a and a PNW 57e; the 57e is the better by far. You'll need a IR torch for them both really , but the 57e is OK in just low light. If you check out solidery.eu they have some nice stuff. I bought a NS 71 from them, but I havent got around to testing it. One word of warning though, some old Night vision goggles use very very high voltages in some components, also there are rumours that some even produce X rays, which is very bad news if you have them strapped to your face! So take care.
      best regards mate.

      I have one modded for mini tamiya. The thing looks cool for sure, but since its gen 0 its actually worse than your own night sight, unless you have some spare car lights to mod for the UV filters that come with the thing. Its also pretty heavy, something close to 5 kilo. Bought it for my Russian tank crew collection.

    • @jamesbarrett3585
      @jamesbarrett3585 6 лет назад

      Get yourself some ns71 goggles as you can clip them to most warpac steel helmets and with some modification more modern ones too they function basically exactly the same but I think they are more versatile and they come with a IR lamp built in

  • @FreshCanOfNothing

    This could possibly be a stupid question but if you were to wear one of those charcoal blocking masks with a gp-5 Soviet filter (the asbestos one). Would it counter the asbestos thus making it safe to wear? Or am I just stupid.

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  7 лет назад

      Do you mean a dust mask?
      And no, you wouldn't be able to make a proper seal with both masks, in theory if you got some P3 rated filter medium and stuck it inside the connector of a GOST filter you may be able to block the asbestos inside the filter and use it, but it would be a lot of effort.

    • @FreshCanOfNothing
      @FreshCanOfNothing 7 лет назад
