How to store gas masks properly

  • I get asked a lot to do a video regarding how to store gas masks/respirators properly to avoid them breaking down or getting damaged.
Here is the very basic guide to respirator storage.
If possible keep a respirator inside it's haversack/carry satchel when not in use, and keep it in areas that do not experience bright sunlight or sudden temperature changes.
The UV radiation in sunlight is damaging to masks, it can discolour them and cause damage to the rubber over time.
You should not hang masks by their straps, this causes tension to the straps and mask over time and wears parts down, I store some broken or very cheap masks this way as illustrated in the video, but it's not a good practise to get into.
Some masks have actual carrying straps, hanging them from these is okay but it's always better to actually store a mask resting on a shelf or inside it's haversack.

    I have a few questions
1: My gp-5 came inside the satchel, so should I clean the satchel?
2: If so, how do I clean it without destroying it?
3: Is it a bad idea to fold a gas mask so it fits in the satchel?
4: Is it a good idea to put the mask in a Ziploc bag?
5: Can artificial light damage a gas mask?

All of my valuable masks are on display my most valuable £500 French M2 is stored in a thick picture frame. The rest of my more modern masks are under my bed. All of my masks are out of direct sunlight and all of the radiators are turned off as my room usually heats up rather well from the sun and I don't feel the cold too much as I'm wearing vest tops most of the time anyway haha.

  • @MrBlaziken111

It kinda depends on the kind of rubber but styrofoam mannequin heads will absorb moisture and dry out the rubber on the mask. If you kept something with thin rubber on it like a GP-5 it might dry it out and make it rot and it'll stick to the styrofoam. Be careful with them.

Have mine on a set of shelves, unfortunately, when I went away someone opened my curtains and my M10, IP5 and GP5 went a bit of a brown colour.
Ah well, at least they're inexpensive, and a bit less obvious if one was trying to use concealment whilst wearing them.

As far as I know there is only one camo gas mask and that's the modern Russian army light weight mask.

    • @meanguy1243
      @meanguy1243 7 лет назад

The ROU I think? It's disposable unless there's a way to swap out the filter in the mask, it seems to take a page out of old PH Hoods. The filter is the mask itself. Super expensive for what it is, but still a cool bit of kit.
I think the PMK-3 has a camo flash hood, similar to the S10's but of course, not blue, black or grey. Pretty sensible, but it's extra equipment you have to equip, even if it's lightweight, still a bit awkward.
I need to pick up a PMK-3 sometime, shame they rarely show up on the European market without costing £20+ on shipping.

cheers mate I've got an old mickey mouse gas mask that I got as a kid and it was immediately my most prized possession, I've had on my shelf for about 10 years and just the other day I took a look at it and noticed the rubber has somewhat deteriorated. I'm really pissed off at myself because I didnt even consider that it would deteriorate and didnt even notice. Is there anything I can do to repair the rips in the rubber and what would you best recommend I do to store it properly?
