I've seen footage from this game for years, and this struck me as significantly sharper than what I recalled. So once again, the Volsky touch strikes again. Hard to believe this was 45 years ago already.
Thanks Dave! This was the good ole days of college football, before ESPN got their hands on it and completely ruined it! A major bowl game on New Year's day on CBS during the day. Fantastic!
Yep! NBC had the Rose and Orange Bowl games; CBS with the Cotton Bowl; and ABC with the Sugar Bowl on NYE . . . and in the earlier years, the competing networks rarely overlapped the telecasts.
one of the things I miss about football are the big shoulder pads. Guys just looked better, bigger and tougher, and I think they could lay the wood better than guys today.
According to legend Bill Walsh was stuck in the airport and was watching this game walsh had never heard of montana untill this game and he was so impressed by the way montana won this game it made him want to draft joe
I remember watching this game Dave! As a longhorn fan I was rooting for Houston to get revenge for my longhorns who were dominated the year before but Montana was already honing his magic in college just waiting to go unseat my cowboys in the NFL! Definitely one of the greatest QB's of all time.
Wow, what a finish. I don't think I watched this one live (at age 9 living on the West Coast the Sugar and Cotton Bowls weren't that interesting to me) but if I had I would have written this one off in the 3rd quarter. Even watching this now knowing the outcome, I was puzzled at how it was going to unfold. Those drives in the early 4th quarter, I kept thinking that this one had to be the beginning of the comeback. Nope! After Montana threw an interception, then later fumbled I became even more mystified. They really did wait until the very last chance they had to turn it around. Incredible!
No padding on the goal posts. The backs and receivers not wearing gloves on a cold day. Lots of empty seats. Players wearing large shoulder pads. Lots of running plays. The game has certainly changed since the 70's.
This is one where the lore of the game doesn’t meet the eye test. Sick and chicken soup or not, Montana played liked chicken poop for most of this game. So many three and outs for both teams. A boring game, actually. Good job, though, Dave, in bringing back the cold reality of this game.
Spoken like a true veteran of playing in 20° weather [-6° windchill .. 25 mph wind] .. and being ill while doing so. Not to mention a crappy worn-out ice-covered field - due to be demo'd after the game.
I never seen this game before. I was rather young when it was televised. Anyway, I’m really shocked at how brutal Joe Montanas college stats were. He had horrendous rushing stats & he had as many interceptions as touchdowns in his career. In this game he looked horrible at times. It seemed like with 7 turnovers Houston dominated on defense. Yet somehow it had to be ☘️ luck? Walsh saw some grit in Joe & I guess the rest is history. It goes to show that all those big college stats do not mean much. I remember Andre Ware & his big numbers & he was a total bust.
My dad would watch old gunsmoke episodes back when I was a child, and now I’m watching old football games as an adult.
I watch both! Lol
Me too
This 49er could play
I enjoy Gunsmoke myself. But I LOVE these classic games!
Old habits never fade, right? They are just passed down to the next generation!

One of my favorite football games of all time.

Very true. I also miss the tear away jerseys.
You can't stop Dave Volsky, you can only hope to contain him!
lol
Montana has always said this was THE most miserable weather he ever played in. He got frostbite.
Daves done it again…salute.

Montana was a pain for Texas football fans, that is for sure!
The only thing that matters is the score at the end. Montana Magic!
not many folks watched this game live as it was opposite the sugar bowl which had number 1 penn state vs number 2 bama.
This is one of those "games I haven't seen before" videos. This will be fun to watch since I'm not too informed on Houston's team.
To watch offensive lineman be athletic again is making me feel 18 .
The field plays so much larger when the linemen don't all weigh 350 lbs. Makes for a much more entertaining game.

Yet another masterful job Dave!!!! Thank you and Go Irish!!
Thank you Dave! Awesome job!
For such a prominent game being played in the Cotton Bowl, it looked peculiar to see empty seats in the background.
The weather was brutal that day. Only the diehards and inebriated showed up 😀
Joe Montana!
The Ice Storm that invaded the DFW area to kick off the year of 1979.

Was this the game that Lindsey Nelson was also sick and Frank Glieber had to help out?
Thanks
I remember watching this game. Spoilers the teamvwith the most points wins
Hey Dave can you possibly work your magic with the 1985 Penn State Norte Damn game please

When football was a defensive GRIND, my friend.

Houston quarterback should’ve done a quarterback sneak at the end. He would’ve had that first down easy.
More of the lords work .
34 unanswered points?...come on Joe...pretend your playin Dallas in the championship...only need 4 scores
Why didn't Montana keep #3 when he moved to the Niners?
@@bloqk16 Steve Young
@@oilcandroid1133 Yep! I just saw that in another video and deleted said comment.
Another famous #3 preceeded him from across the Bay .. Daryle Lamonica - Oakland Raiders [Notre Dame 1963 - 3 year starter].
I thought this was a great Montana moment but ND won in spite of him.
I asked for this about a week ago [?] and am so happy to see it!
