I spent a week in Chiang Mai. I had a fantastic experience! The people are respectful and friendly. I loved it there. I was in Bangkok for 1 week. It was okay save for the hostel (Yaks House Hostel). They would discriminate against me on some issues such as not cleaning my room or giving me fresh towels (I had to remind them everyday to do so), overcharging me for the hostel deposit fee, not giving me a menu or very sluggish service compared to other Caucasian customers at the restaurant, asking for payment on my meal order before serving me food etc. I commented on the discrimination and rated them poorly on account of this. In 2022, shame really! Of course not all human beings are racist but some cheap & hateful people are racist!
This comment actually is a bit racist. People often don't anticipate black people being able to be well articulated. Black from around the world hear this often and it's often offensive.
@@EtikBenjamin I would say your comment is very racist and offensive. You have made your own assumptions about my comment and drawn your own conclusions. It has nothing to do with anything I said. I had not declared my reasons, but you created your own and imposed them onto me, that is extremely rude and childish.
@@EtikBenjamin you did make assumptions, that part is very obvious. And, there was nothing wrong with the language I used. Have the decency to point it out, it's in writing, not verbal, so point it out, your opinions mean jack sh.t without providing a basis. Do so.
Racism exists but mainly against their Burmese,Cambodian and Lao neighbors. Although as far as Asia goes Thailand is one of the least racist countries. If you want to see real racism & xenophobia then visit China or even Korea. China has to be the most nationalist and racist country in Asia if not in the entire world.
I believe they have soft spot for Asia they like, and people who can speak their language. ( this apply to all Asian ) I can't speak Chinese but when I say I'm from Thailand.. they smile back at me and become more talkative perhaps I went to a nice town. Apply to Korean as well a port town, but not so much human interaction in Seoul aside from couple of nice grandpa grandma according to my experience. While my friend got Japanese office worker to runaways from him because he try to ask for direction, in the end our group experience there do not have much human interaction.
Hello Pete, I cannot understand, if Brian says that Thailand is a prejudice country or the thai's are racist. My mother was born in Kenya. My grand parents had some kind of plantations in Kenya employing all African workers. But when the trouble broke out in Africa. My grandparents had to flee Kenya with their children, because they were scared for their lives. Thai's are the most polite people I have come across. They are always smiling and very helpful. My grandparents were Portuguese decends. I love Thailand. If I could live in Thailand. I would be the happiest man on Earth.
Hi, I am thai, I feel sad that you got that treatment, but to point out one thing you say. On the bus, We normally not sit next to someone we don't know. Maybe they just don't want to bothering you. Sometime cultural different is something foreigner don't get. I am against racism, I would be happy If you have a nice place to live now. I am so sorry for act of thai people.
As long as you always keep in mind that you are a GUEST in this country you’ll be alright. That goes for all foreigners, white, black or yellow. “We are what we think”…
I study, work ,and live in UK almost all my life. My experiences of racial discrimination (every single day) made me stronger. There's always racial discrimination every walk of life. FYI ; I am a physician specializing in children and babies. Being Asian , people expected me NOT to be a doctor let alone to be a high ranking doctor. It always pain me to see their disappointment when they found out that I am the most senior person in the team. Feel so sorry for the racists !!!
@@sanoo2834 "only Thai citizens can complete the full-time MD degree in Thailand" from the official website. That's an example from Thailand. Anyway, we don't need to continue, I was just provoking. Sorry about that 😃
I am African American living in Thailand. I am light skinned and sometimes thai's wonder what ethnicity I am. Some even think I'm thai as I have lighter skin than many thai men. But my experience the last 5yrs has been wonderful. I'm also a big spender so I get the royal treatment when I go anywhere. I respect and admire the culture and even speak thai. One thing about me I'm a nature lover. So going to Pattaya/ Patong and bangkok is not my thing. Long live thailand khop khun khrup. Be kind be good to each other.
I had a similar experience. I'm probably darker than you, but speaking thai goes a long way! And they can tell if you love thai people and culture, I really enjoyed getting to know thai people.
@@genericdeveloper3966 I totally agree Thai's will also know if your heart is open to culture. And YES your color race sex height will matter nit noy if you can speak thai. Just imagine if lizards spoke thai they would be super stars lol. Then again animals are smart and may be able to speak languages across the world, but refuse to because people will make them work😅
Great Channel - love the interviews and different creative topics. I’m American and Lived in Asia for the last five years. During the beginning of COVID locals didnt even want to come close to me. Im going to have to push back that people not wanting to sit by you during COVID is racist. Thats not saying racism doesn’t exist here but I think there are much better and obvious examples that we have all seen
It is prejudice and racism is borne out of prejudice and lack of knowledge/awareness. Would they not occupy the sit if empty beside a Thai? The only thing the fella might be u aware of is that some people avoid sitting beside white people too in Asia as if only foreigners carry Covid!
@@dhaton2314 It has nothing to do with race. I'm white and that happened to me hundreds of times. Literally people walk to the other side of the street. Pull the masks up the second they notice me. Don't let me in their coffee shop / restaurant or it has "suddenly closed". Don't get me wrong - I'm not suggesting racism isn't here - I'm just saying that people not wanting to be near you due to COVID is not a good analogy for that. Actually - I just reread what you wrote and I think you're saying the same thing lol
I've noticed that the Isan/Lao people and those in Chiang Mai are very welcoming. Though those Isaan/Issan might not be rich in wealth, they are rich in the parts that matter, their souls. They might suffer discrimination on a daily basis from other Thais (those near Bangkok), but this gives them a purpose to keep their culture and language alive. That's resilience !👏👏
I conduct like myself as a Gentleman, while in Thailand and I’m treated like one. But I do experience occasional feelings of alienation and disgruntlement . Which is understandable, but then I realize that nobody forced me to come here. I am a guest and not an invited one.
In my 15 years in Thailand i experienced racism one time. I refuse to go back to that business again. To me they do not represent the Thai people and their genuine sincerity is greeting myself and other foreigners.
I am brown and not 100% black, but I had a great experience there overall. It is true what they say about teaching jobs, many of the best schools prefer a white teacher, but I still secured many jobs as a brown person with a US passport. As you said it is about who you are most importantly. If you love thai culture and people it will show. If you don't it will show. I learned the language pretty well (for a farang) while I was there, and loved making new friends speaking Thai.
@@genericdeveloper3966The main reason Thai schools do not prefer black teachers is not specifically from their skin but mainly because they watched many Hollywood movies to realize that black American accents are weird and do not need the students to get it.
@@raydhanes I don't think the average Thai knowledge of English is good enough to pick up on accents. They hire plenty of Australians speaking of funny accents. I think it has more to do with the fact a white person looks the part and is a status symbol. Just as the US passport is a status symbol. Just as ones teaching credentials / education / experience is. They take all of that into account, and some schools will put more emphasis on appearance than others. I know for me, many people were just happy to have someone with a US passport and college degree. But the pecking order would be something like 1) White person with a college degree 2) US/UK native born citizen with a degree (any race) 3) Filipino 4) Thai English teacher
So glad I grew up in HawAii, we have so many different cultures, religions, food, languages. Unfortunately we do have racism there, especially if you are white, now that’s a twist. My daughter in law has dark skin and I was so shocked and frankly disgusted that when she would date someone they didn’t introduce her to his family, he was ashamed to be seen with her. She is gorgeous. My son is also from HawAii and he is very open minded.
Love your channel, great relaxed interview style and you're always very respectful. I moved from Ireland to Spain to live, and work in Gibraltar in 2012, 3 years ago I moved to malta, never really encountered any prejudice in spain/Gibraltar other than getting shafted by landlords but I have been told to go back to my country a few times in Malta, I don't know, not sure I count it as racist as a foreigner we are always somewhat on the outside, bit it's still the EU. However, what the Africans experience here is against human rights, simple as. Paid less than half of Europeans and given the most dangerous horrible jobs. A lot of these stories can be found online, people are always shocked when I tell them.
Thanks very much. Interesting to hear about your experiences in Malta about being told to go home and it’s in the EU. I’ve never had that in Thailand to be fair

I have brown skin. I was born in India. Studied in the US and work there. Once I was trying to get in to a club, the security stopped me at the gate, showed them my California driver's license. Still they said I couldn't enter. I had 10K in my pocket, took it out, showed it to them that I was going to spend it next door. I shouldn't have done that, if not anything only for my security. But that's a rare experience. I have been accepted 99% of time in Thailand, mostly because I know their culture which is similar to India. I have many Thai friends and they treat me like family.
The majority of my friends in Thailand are Thai. I have very few foreign friends here. Unlike America where approaching someone to speak with you are considered a freak. In Thailand, I can approach almost any Thai and talk without having to feel as if I am a freak. Happy to be back in Thailand had enough of so-called American values.
I'm Thai my friends, let's me explain about Thai skin and whitening things. 90%++ of Thai people who care about the color of the skin are women, and I have to say that the white skin Thai girls want is not a Farang white or Europe white. I know some Farangs thought thai people want to have white skin like Europe people but they are not my friends. For Thai people we have a very hot sun so if you have to work against the son our skin will burnt and become black but not Black like african it's black like burnt and for Thai people if your skin's burnt and become black people would think you are a low class labour or you are a homeless so most people especially women doesn't want their skin to become black that's why there are a lot whitening products here. For me black skin(african) is the same as white skin because our skin is like in the middle of you guys but when our skin burnt and goes black it's really weird. And for the white skin most Thai girls want and thought it's beautiful is white asian like Korean people it's asian white looks like zombie white not white like farang. Just look at some white Thai girls thieir skin are more light and some of them even more white than farang. For black people problem in Thailand I have to say Thai people don't really racist my friends but I know a few Thai people start to afraid black people because it's a lot of bad news about black people scammed Thai people and there are tons of sufferer, many black people came here and like to steal, also a lot of Thai people who do business with African were cheated. There are countless cases that people post on the internet my friends and that's why people start to afraid black people here. But like I said there are just a few people my friend. I hope these problems will be decrease in the future. Hope you guys have a great time in Thailand.
After 11 years of living in Thailand I never could get my head around the obsession with skin colour. I’m a firm believer that it’s what’s inside that matters. People should be judged on their actions and behaviour not skin colour. I really don’t have a lot of time for people who are obsessed with the colour of their skin. I also think the stereotype that all farang like dark skin girls is funny. I know many instances where this is not the case especially in Bangkok. Thanks for your comment. Chok dee
@@ThairishTimes Kob Khun Krub for your reply. Yes I agree, for Thai people we think most of the people who love to judge other people are not a nice guy not only just about the skin. And I believe most Thai people do not even know what racist is because we have Multirace, Multilanguage, multireligion that's mean everyone can live here if you want. Thai means Freedom. And for Thai people it's not weird if you have all types of skin friends in one room because more than 40 millions people around the world came to Thailand per year and that's why Thai people do not really know about racist believe me. Example: Buakaw(famous Muaythai fighter) proud to be black and he called himself "DUM" which means black in Thai and love other people to called him DUM(Black) he always called himself "DUM DOT COM". 555
Those things that you mentioned, getting cheated, scammed and stealing are done by a small % of all races not just black. The amount of black people who do those things would be the same as any other race.
A considered and well made video Pete, thank you. Bryan is an observant and insightful commentator. I really enjoyed this approach to your content. Well done !
ABSOLUTELY! That opening scene! To see what they say about Africans in the comment section of BKK post, including apparent physician (Thai women who are the most blatantly racist in this country) is dehumanizing.
I'm brown and not 100% "black", but I'd agree that the worst racism is in teaching jobs (which is still not insurmountable by any means). Outside of that, if you are willing to learn Thai language there are so many people willing to be your friend and I had a great time there. I met a family that took me in and taught me more about the language and culture and helped me find an apartment. Of course part of it depends on who you are. If you are willing to adapt to their culture and play by their rules everything becomes easier. If you don't like their culture or language then maybe it is not the place for you (not talking to Bryan, but anyone reading)
cool, I'm glad you had a great experience. You're right it also depends on who you are. I've found Thai people to be very receptive when I make an effort to speak Thai or learn about Thai culture
Don't blame the victims of racism, for actions of the racists against them! (What you're condoning is the same mentality as, if a girl goes to a bar to drink and talk to men - then gets raped afterwards, she's at fault.)
MPJ The one good thing about Thailand is being a tourist and spending money there because it's cheap anyway. There was recently huge billboards at subway station in the Siam Paragon area with black models advertising designer fashion. I've lived in a small Thai town somewhere up north and I can assure you Thais are generally peaceful people easy to get along with because I lived there and never felt like I was I was black or foreigner.
OMG!!! There is definitely discrimination in Africa….I lived in central Africa for six years and had the opportunity to travel around on holidays. Unfortunately African countries face tribalism where a tribe may have a different language or dialect and customs. Many (most?) Africans will identify with their tribe than their nationality. These divisions in numerous African countries ( including Kenya) creates corruption and political instability within a nation. And I had the same “experience” as Bryan in March - May 2020 when many Thais ( including the infamous health minister) was blaming foreigners for spreading Covid; thus, many times I had people choosing not to sit 2 chairs away from me in a bank but preferred to stand ( while waiting) or same experience on the Skytrain.555
Discrimination in Africa…… That’s laughable at best. Africa is considered a shit hole country by the world. No one is running to Africa for a better life. Certainly human beings of every hue will always find reasons to separate themselves, but to mention people who are at the bottom of society with black skin that is considered least desirable and compare their pettiness with real discrimination, is a joke. Black skin has no real power in the world
Understanding that real effects of racism. In what way were you harmed by someone sitting two chairs away from you? Maybe I misunderstanding... Did someone not provide you service because of your race?
Great conversation Pete and Bryan, thank you so much for putting more light onto this sensitive matter. But I think in some parts of Thailand racism is in born..
I'm so happy that you did this video! I'm making plans to visit Thailand and as a black woman from the United States, I have been told that if some Thai people realize that you have an American accent versus an African accent, that you are immediately treated better, however, this is just as disgusting as the outright racism. I can't be ok with you treating me well because I'm American, but then treating people from my ancestors homeland like trash. As long as the government let's me visit a country, I refuse to let someone's racism keep me away if I want to be there! I do however understand that this treatment is not the totality of Thai people and that they have an excellent reputation overall of being extremely friendly and nice to foreigners. It's really a shame that for all of the progress that humans have made over thousands of years, we still can't seem to get over racism that unfortunately exists all over the world and the differences among us instead of treating each person individually. There is a long list of my attributes that should come before my skin color.
You’ll have a great time in Thailand if you come. Please don’t let this interview deter you. Racism exists everywhere unfortunately. When will people wake up and stop creating differences between us based on skin colour
Thailand isn’t as developed as the US… other countries are far more racist. People think US is bad clearly haven’t been anywhere else lol. Thai will overcharge you if foreign regardless of race but it’s a minor issue
You were bang on. I could see my treatment as a Canadian black dude was very different than African dudes. It was very obvious. I had never seen such selective racism. Being black, Im used to those not wanting anything to do with black folks meaning all black folks. In Thailand? VERY different. I was getting love from women that wanted nothing to do with Africans or guys from India or Pakistan. It was the most bizarre thing ever.
I’ve had no problem in Thailand. I was treated like a celebrity over there. The majority of Thais embrace black people. Unfortunately a lot of 419 gangs have caused issues within communities, and some Thais don’t trust certain Africans such as Nigerians.
if he or she is still thinking people has racism in there mind carry with them where ever they go just like him trust me. he or she will never found happiness. I watched a lot of black in Thailand acted these new experiences changed their life. His action with the security man that he answered he is from home. It is not an appropriate answer at all. He should show his passport and tell the true that is his job that s all it is. It s all about his mind being ill.
What your seeing is two human beings talking about real life issues outside of the governments domain. You see, governments pretend to be on your side but in actuality they are they to devide. When you control perception, you control the mass so that the mass doesn't come back to hunt you which in turn keeps order and obedience while giving you only a little piece of the pie. I've only ever been to Thailand and live hear 6 years now but to see the massive gap in inequality is just mind blowing. Brian sounds like a nice man and best of luck to you and your family. The thing with Thailand is, people are still living in old times and the fact that Thailand doesn't share a universal language just adds to the downfall. So, when you see another immigrant living and working in Thailand, this can be a huge huge shock for many many Thai because they are so distant from the rest of the world. That's my take on it please feel free to share your thoughts. Thairish times great video and also raising awareness.
Being a teacher, entrepreneur, podcaster and so many other things out here in Thailand, I've been there. Tutorial centers, schools and even white teachers saying "no black teacher here! Black teachers are dumb and dirty!" Thai women, the most racist of them all, would say "eww, black man, low-class, pimp!" This was during the height or racism in 2015. Adam Levine and others would be promoted heavily on billboards and this made the distaste among Thai women even greater. However, with Netflix and Black Panther, and now it being 2022, I'm so gratefulf or those comments because it made me realize how much I've overcome and the massive success I am now today. Stay strong, brotha!
This stuff makes me sick. I lived in Puebla Mexico for 3.5 years where I experienced this and whenever I would tell the locals about it, they tried to make me think it was my own imagination and that I just needed to work on my self confidence. I will never live in another country and subject myself to this. I’ll stay home in the US and take my chances
This is the same thing that’s happening to me in the Philippines they say the same exact thing to me these people are disgusting. I know exactly what you’re going through. That’s a common thing that they say to hide their racism
Interesting because as a black man, I’ve never experienced any racism in Thailand, Cambodia, or even the Philippines 🤷🏾♂️ in fact, all the Southeast Asian countries is my first countries to vacation before the pandemic - I’m in Pattaya right now and everyone is nice to me, so maybe it has a lot to do with the attitude of the person crying about racism.
You didn't have to use the word "crying" about racism! It suggests that because you haven't experienced racism, that he must be lying or making it up? Smh
Asian countries are well known for being racist against Black people. Racism exists all over the world. Sometimes it's curiosity about someone that looks different from themselves. Bryan seems like a nice guy who gives off good vibes. Don't judge a book by it's cover; get to know the person before forming an opinion.
"Asian countries are well known for being racist against Black people"? Then what do you call the US then? George Floyd are literly killed because of his skin colors
@@Student0Toucher I guess it's alright to treat you differently Cause I know what god gonna deal with racist people they will not be welcome in the heavens or earth so will not exist destroyed with the devil.
Heavy subject and thank you Pete for covering this and Bryan for doing this interview. We need to keep having this conversation until we don’t. Cheers mates, hope this message reaches those who need to hear it.
Pete, you must know that Asians living in USA., Europe and Australia are getting some levels of prejudice and discrimination, here in Thailand the issue is very mild so no need to over-dramatize it.
Don Lemon (African/American Newsreader) interviewing Morgan Freeman (African/American Actor): Lemon - "What, in your opinion, is the single biggest thing we could all do, to combat racism?" Freeman - "Stop talking about it". Don Lemon was clearly gutted. He had hoped Morgan would say "Kill whitey", or something along those lines.
In Thailand it's the most known rule not to touch a person's head. Anyone who has visited there knows this . The vogler is acting stupid. Like he doesn't know.
To apply the English Teacher job in Thailand, if you are black American, Canadian, British it will be no problems because you are native speaker. If you are black South African, Zimbabwean, it will be a problem because they think that you're non native speaker.
LIES, LIES AND MORE LIES! I've been denied, as a black American, 250 jobs for being black, and I have reiterated that on my podcast from 2016-2019 until I created my own niche market, and although still living in Thailand, I teach NO THAIS because they're no worth my time and I have no reason to prove myself to anyone.
I’m 6 minutes in, and I’m sure I will edit or write something else. If someone doesn’t sit next you in the middle of a pandemic because the Thai government say the onicrom variant is coming in from Africa, that is not racism it’s sensible
Hope you checked out my answer on Quora about this topic? And, also Pete, if you can interview an Indian Thai about his experience of growing up in Thailand. Cheers mate ;)
This video was incomplete. They treat Africans different than they treat the more caramel colored black folks. They associated us with the music they listen to and the sports they watch. North American black folks get a totally different kind of love than Africans. It was the weirdest thing to witness.
I’m looking into this myself hence arriving on this video today (good interview and a top charming bloke btw) Be good to know if you guys did make the move, how it was and any specifics if you are willing to share? I’m mixed race from the UK with quite light skin (at least in the cold of the uk anyway 😂) so no idea what my experience would be (most of my racism experiences in UK is people saying stupid stuff thinking they’re in an all white environment)
I have had only one bad encounter a few years back when having dinner one night. When I overheard two Thai women walking past my table. One said in Thai guessing I could not understand her. I no sit with foreigners. I almost lost my temper but decided it was not worth a response. More than once and it is always young Thai women when speaking Thai they suddenly do not understand me. One easy way to solve that problem is to insult them in Thai. Oddly now they understand every word I said. Perhaps there might have been other times with entering national parks when I was asked to pay more but have never had a Thai say anything directly towards me. At the parks, I tell them I either pay the same as a Thai otherwise no. That is one of the benefits of understanding Thai you can hear the Thais talking about you as you walk past. I can honestly say have never heard anything negative they are mostly curious as to why I came to visit their town. Sorry, Brian, you had to deal with that. You are a good soul no matter what color you are.
Dual pricing always annoys me especially since I pay tax here. It wasn’t always this way. A few years ago if a foreigner held a work permit they could pay the Thai price but that was cancelled about 6years ago😤
@@ThairishTimes As long as foreigners continue to pay and make excuses for the Thais to overcharge it will continue. Having been here so many years and speaking Thai I can always tell if I got overcharged for something. If I walk into a restaurant for example that has no menu and I get a weird vibe or I know the price is too much I just walk away. Rip me off for 5 baht and you will never see me again I never forget a place or face NEVER! Treat me well and I will return a thousand times. But some Thais are so short-sighted they try. I had a guy on the train today who thought I was stupid enough to pay 20 baht for a small bottle of water. And believe it or not, there are some stupid foreigners who pay for it.
The Roads Less Traveled Southeast Asia I wouldn’t call the “foreigners” stupid, more that they just don’t expect to get ripped off by these bastards because it doesn’t happen where they’re from
This is a tough subject because I really don't think Thais are racist. My wife is from Isann and her and her family are quite dark like alot of people in Isann. I can see where Brian is coming from but he and his wife are living here and doing well. I think gravitate towards those people that treat you right and stay away from those that don't,if you keep talking about racism it starts to piss people off. Remember sometimes there is a cultural thing and it will take time for people to change.
Don't worry about the national park dual prices policy. Even we thais also experience the same thing even triple or quad price rates according to the popularity of the places (it has been the same rate national wide in previous time). Most of the national parks in Kanchanaburi province set the entrance fee the highest due to reason of opportunity of easy income combining with congestion management. The less popular and not congested will charge you less respectively. Even for some national park that very few people know or hard to get there you might have a chance for free camping or free staying on park's own resort. This is sometime due to courteousness of the park officials.
I am Thai American living in US. You have to understand Thai customs majority of Thai have fair skin and to see someone totally dark skin they are just curious why Black person looks so much different. I don't think Thai look down upon Black it's more curiosity than intending to insult. That's in general are very friendly and nice people.
They're curious why black people have dark skin. 😒 Are you saying most Thai people have the thinking age of a toddler that they can't get their head around the idea of people having different colour skin.
I don't think Thai people are racist. My wife is from Sisaket and people in Isann are quite dark but who gives a shit. People are naturally curious especially when people look different. I am sometimes the only white guy amongst many Thais and I love it. Inbrace who you are and people will accept you. It just takes a little time. Don't have a chip on your shoulder and be yourself.
Total BS ....it's plain and simple racism like every where else in the world.. Why do Thais can't give a straight forward answer and always need to end the sentence but Thai people are so nice and friendly and kind ..blablabla..common stop it and be real ....
About the parents not wanting there kids to be taught by a black person. Also a misconception there is the same problem in Russia but it is not becuse they are black it is because they think that black people from Africa are not native speakers. Which is partly true because it does not matter how well you can speak English if your home language is Swahili you are not a native speaker.
@@destinationsroadslesstraveled It is greed, and racism, and capitalism, and opportunism, and a dozen other isms. And if you would rather take a stand that nobody will ever notice than see the Grand Palace, that's egotism.
Thank you for covering this topic. I've fallen in love with the Thai culture and language thru their cinema and had planned to move there in the years to come. However, I was worried about what challenges I would face due to my race. I'm from a multi-ethnic culture in south-America and as a creole girl with middle-grade brown skin, I have not once in my life experienced racism. I've had Indian friends and native friends and black friends and white friends, Chinese friends and Indonesian friends. I was only introduced to the concept of racism by American media. Sure there's racism here, but it happens so little and only between certain groups of people. So, yes, I am a bit afraid of what I might face there. I'm not a sensitive person by any means, but being treated poorly is unpleasant no matter who you are. Thank you for enlightening me. I won't allow this to dissuade me. However, I might visit first and then decide if I want to live there. Because, as I've discovered from my journeys about the interwebs, every country outside of my own seems to have a sort of distaste for anyone of my particular complexion.
Everyone gets racism here including white people. It’s not really meant as a ‘profile and judge’ thing it’s just ‘you look different to me therefore you are different’.
Love your channel and the interviews, you have a new subscriber in me. I am so sick of the racism experienced worldwide, but lots of of power in the media, so much of it could be squashed, because ignorance is only washed away with enlightenment. Many are just looking to live, not survive in a racist climate, but horrible in America. Hopefully the light bulb comes on for many. Thanks for another great interview!
I noticed being treated differently during COVID. Some Thais would move away from me because i looked different. It's base ignorance. If it is innocent that is one thing, if it is malicious then it's a problem.
I don't want to trivialise the subject matter as it's serious but ...I'm white , blond Caucasian, with a little hair on my arms. I recall a time when some Thai children stroked my arms and exclaimed " LING! LING!" Translates as Monkey Monkey . We all laughed. It was the innocence of childhood self expression - and many years ago - so no offence taken 😀

When I lived in China I definitely saw racism there. Against black people. I always thought it must have been hard for them to live in China. I once asked a Chinese person why do they feel that way towards black people. They thought they “were dirty and dangerous”. So every time I saw a black person in China I was wondering how their stay was. In Hong Kong too I would see ads everywhere trying to promote whitening skin products. I mean everywhere. Even in movie theaters before the movie started. They think the whiter your skin is the more you come across as being “richer”. More refined. They attributed darker skin to being poor. Uneducated. It’s true. All of this.
Hahaha 🤣 as black person who been living in china for the past 6 years I would say yes it’s a bit hard but it’s better not to get things get to you. Thank god for creating us to be a chill person cuz we will in-counter racism every where we go lol 😂
My first or second year (1989) in Chiang Mai I was with my girlfriend (later became my wife) I wanted to try a shirt on over my tshirt to see if it would fit. My wife all of a sudden said put it back . I was but I like this shirt. No put it back. Afterwards she explained that the Chinese Thai proprietor didn't want me trying the shirt on because falang are dirty and smelly. It happens. I moved on but was touched by my then girlfriends honesty. One of her endearing qualities.
I’ve been all over Africa and I have blond hair. Many, many people touched my hair. But I guess it’s context. Because they made me feel so welcome. I was never offended by it.
Racism is a topic that brings out the best and the worst in people. We have all experienced some form of racism in our lives. It would be nice if people would try to be more tolerant and kinder to each other. I agree, Bryan has a great RUclips Channel; I subscribed long ago. Cheers!
The country in Africa the brother was referring to has highly potential and the people are very ambitious and very highly intelligent... They're the best of the best successful black group in America Canada and England however unfortunately some of their scamming and dealing in drug nature overshadow their good deeds very sad
With all due respects to Brian, I due think he is mixing racism in the context of hate against blacks of African ethnic groups which is prevalent more in the West with discrimination to darker skin (more details below) that exists in Thailand. Before going on I admit that I am Thai myself, but I have traveled and lived in N. America for many years before settling down in my home country. In Thai culture and history, we are a society that is well acquainted with serfdom. Although, the common people of Thailand in the past were not really, serfs, we did however practiced and understand working hard in the agricultural fields, paying taxes to a centralized power and we always pay utmost respect to our royalties. Even in the past, families whom were given administrative powers were paid with much wealth (monies, land, etc.) and they in turn owned farms, where they employed the commoners to work in the fields. The wealthy stayed indoors and administered wealth, while he commoners worked in the fields. As a result, we see that commoners were usually darker skinned than the wealthy. As time went on, it has come to be a belief that having fair skinned reflected your family well-being in terms of wealth (as well as more beautiful), therefore, the lack of a need to work in fields. This is where the so called "racism" comes from. It is not really racism in the same sense as in colonial West. It is a discrimination against people of different classes, all based on the perceived holding of wealth for that person (or their family). This same belief and customs seem to be carried forward to Thai society today towards migrant workers, and the latter do rightfully complain a lot about it. So my thought is that if Brian would have understood the history of Thais more, he may not be so quick to judge situations he may have come across. I hope I was able to clarify the key issue here.
how can you say it’s not racism. Did you miss the part that he said he and his friends had issues getting jobs in their fields even though they were well qualified? It’s 2022 we’re in the Internet Information Age. There’s no excuse for holding onto those beliefs other than evil and hatred that still exist in this world.
some good and accurate points you make. the connection between outdoor work and darker skin and using it to discriminate on the basis of class has been going on for centuries, but is not unique to Thailand - think about the caste system in India for example. But you went off the rails by wheeling out the far left diarrhoea about the "colonial West racism". Racism is not a Western invention, it is everywhere, and always will be. I have travelled a lot, visited over 100 countries and I've seen it everywhere. But the worst by far, by a long way, was China. The levels of racism there would make even the most colonial Westerner's eyes pop out.
Exactly, this is pretty much true in all the Asian countries in the past where the lower classes had darker complexions due to the nature of their work outside. Even today in South Korea folks with a bit of melanin are at a disadvantage all things being equal, and in particular for females. Unlike the West where there exist some leeway to be considered handsome or beautiful, in Korea the ideal of beauty for both sexes is to have porcelain white skin.
I respect his thought (even though I think some of his experiences are just cultural difference). Not to say he's right or wrong but, to anyone who are interested about racism in Thailand, I recommend to also watch this video titled "The Truth About Racism in Thailand" on youtube channel "Brett Dev". The interviewee talk about it starting at around 24:25 on the video. Btw, I'm also Thai.
I should travel to Bahia state in Brazil on my next trip. My future trips to Thailand will be strictly for Muay Thai. I been visiting Thailand for the past 10 years but watching this videos kills my interest to visit Thailand little by little. All what it takes 1 negative experience to destroy all what was good in countries where most citizen are homogenous.
I am a dark skin man. Racism is EVERYWHERE on planet Earth. There are racists in every race. Sometimes, we even display racism, discrimination, segregation towards our own people... we are not talking about people who migrated in our country. Racism is so ingrained in human's trait that we display it, sometimes, without malevolent intention. People moving into someone's country should not complain, but rather accept it or leave the country if they cannot use it to their advantage. Apparently, the saying goes in Thailand: "light skin in the office, dark skin on the farm". Just look at their ad or their tv presenters, look at all those wearing kaki uniform (government employee) once a week. Rarely it will include darker skin Thai. Even the agency recruiting teachers do so on the skin color criteria. The add goes: Filipinos preferred ... or European origin preferred. Are they amazing teachers? After inquiry, I got the following answer: Light skin people are desirable to the students. My greetings have been ignored 8 out of 10 by Thai of all walk of life. But apart from the absence of libraries to borrow good reading books from, I brush away any display of racism, discrimination, or segregation by telling myself "this is the way they live, get over it or go back to where you come from if you do not like it ... but never complain." I do believe the alpha humans in everyday people in Thailand have Coreen, or Chinese, or Vietnamese, or Filipinos or Caucasian genes and blood. Imagine for a second that the man who composed the Thai national Anthem was mix Thai-African/ Black. IMPOSSIBLE. I do believe he was mixed Caucasian. Thai melt towards Caucasians skins and adore the very light skin Asians. So ... I would not even rise the race / color issue in someone else's country. Take it or leave it ... They can like whoever race and skin color they want: it is their privilege. If you still stay here, that means it is way better than your own country. So just be grateful that they allow you to stay.
Hello Pete, today you addressed a very sensitive topic which unfortunately we won't be able to resolve with this video alone. But it's important to keep talking about it! It's a shame that after so many years we still have to talk about what skin color, gender, religion and sexual orientation someone has. I think that there are good and bad people in every country on earth and of course there are unfortunately a few idiots everywhere. As a foreigner, I have been living here in Thailand for a long time and at first it was not always easy for me to understand how I was treated. As I learned the language and tried to put myself in the shoes of the Thai people, I was able to find a good basis for dealing with the locals here. Today I live fully integrated in a Thai community and feel good. A word about Bryan, he seems very open and likeable to me. I think he's mentally strong enough to resist any provocation and just ignore it. We all remember the story of Georg Floyd (etc.) well and it hurt all people who have a heart to see it! Why do we forget so easily? Are we really that jaded? I think NO! It's not just black lives that matter - every single life matters. If we learn to understand that then there will be no more differences!!! Thanks for the topic Pete. Greetings from Sattahip - Gerd 🌈🍀💖🌴🌈
As you said Gerd every life matters. I made this video to hear the story of Bryan. We all have our own experiences in Thailand and it was nice to hear his. A friend of mine was told that he couldn’t be hired because he was black and I thought i’d make some content related to that
When looking for a place to live in Bangkok, I had Thais tell me that Pratunam wouldn't be ideal because of lots of black people (Africans) there. But who knows? They were probably talking Indians and Pakistanis, too. 🤔
I grew up in England and I moved to America when I was 15 years now I have America, UK and Africa accent i switch my accent ON and OFF whenever racism is knocking on my door in Thailand Brazil and DR , and I realise that this people don't love me as black person but they love me because I have America and UK accent, One time I fought to rescued my fellow African in Thailand all because of my America passport and accent... wakeup black people we don't have love and they clearly don't appreciate us everywhere we go but I felt slightly different in Philippines because most of them love black men
Sometimes racism is taken as an excuse when some people don't get what they want then they will blame others. For me it will be called racism or not depends on the context culture and people involved. It cannot take what is going on in a society to judge all others.
@@OneLifeTwoLive this person has no example because he obviously has never experienced racism before. He is insinuating that Brian the guy in the videos experience with racism is invalid because he’s using it as an excuse for not getting what he wants I don’t know what that has to do with random people coming up and touching your hair which is indeed very rude and racist even if you have never seen a black person before treating him like some type of animal.
great interview, well done. racial insensitivity is everywhere. i have a high bar for racism so....people are very thin skinned nowadays, "silence is better" is the new mantra. nobody speaks the truth in front of other races for fear of offending, and nobody admits it cos that may be considered racist! what a silly time we live in. i liked bryan, good outlook on life but the covid on the train was maybe covid fear. we moved to LA and my half thai kids get stick from young mexican immigrant kids daily in elementary school, racial stuff, told em to get used to it and deal with it, gave them tips and try and embrace them as there will always be ignorant people. i told them the offending kids were racially insensitive kids because of their parents, but no NOT racists. if they get to know u they may change as u could be the first asians they may talk to in their short lifetimes. the last thing i want is to turn my kids into victims........
If you don’t want to turn them onto victims then find people who look like them to live around. Simple as. Tribalism is never disappearing. Welcome to Nature
i'm thai and i can tell you that thailand is more xenophobic than racist. thailand is not plague by the misconception of black people, like the west do. it's xenophobia more than anything. discrimination in thailand apllies to neighbouring countries like laos and myanmar more. thailand does have the culture of saying bad things about foreigners right in front of them because they know they can't understand thai. but in their eyes that not a bad thing, because to me that became cultural for thai people, i don't know when it began. mostly they talked about the appearance. i've noticed it all my life.
I found it funny when I was learning the Thai language that we call white skin (piu) 'Sii kaao' but black skin 'Sii Klam'. I ask why not 'Sii dam'. She said it was bad to call someone 'Sii dam'. So I said with that logic why is it ok to call someone 'Sii kaao'?
Actually we use Sii dam too, but it slowly become offensive worldwide so Sii Klam start to be use more often. In the past, we didn't even called someone blown skin Sii Namtaan if someone got very tan skin they will got labelled as Black too
I have had people grab my hair, arm feel my skin, during Sokran some guy hit me. Thailand is racist, but Ive realized that it is based on how dark you are. Thank God that there are clinics here that help you bleech your skin because Im going next month. My experience in Africa has been a nightmare
Not Thailand as a whole, and I’m saying that as an upbringing, but myself being African American, having lived here for 11 years, and my wife working for an airline here, I havent encountered anything in the last four years. Do you think it’s your perception of life? If so, go to Vietnam and tell me what happened to you there before I share my experience.
Pete your a top man, and its great to hear his story as well, Bryan just ignore the haters mate- and keep carrying on with your life there is more to the world than haters, enjoy mate and all the best.
I am a black man from Australia. I went to Bangkok in 2019 and I received similar racism events like not being able to get a massage or not being served at a restaurant or being looked at weirdly ,so from now on I go to Philippines, where they are much friendlier to Black people in my opinion.
I was in Indonesia for a month, had my haircut twice, once in Jakarta when I first arrived & again in Bandung as I was leaving. Both times, I was surrounded by hair stylists picking My hair off the floor, asking My then Indonesian GF, was it real, or out of a bottle, some asked if they could touch the hair on my arms. I'm ginger by the way. I had swarms of kids following me in the villages, I was like the pied piper, guys were running into their homes to grab cameras to take photos. Some even asked if I would have a photo with their wife. I've met Thai guys that absolutely hate farang, an ex brother in-law would say farang every 5th word when talking to people when I was around, he was obviously talking about us as a people. I think Thailand is racists to a degree, but as it develops that will fade.
Thank you
Racists are ugly from within and supposed to be Buddhists???????
The main problem is that some Nigerians stain the reputation for all black people.
Quite a weighty topic we discussed. Thanks for having me on, Pete!

( this apply to all Asian )
I can't speak Chinese but when I say I'm from Thailand.. they smile back at me and become more talkative
perhaps I went to a nice town.

We don't have much money to take a taxi.
He/she means that the first choice is to not sit next to others. Of course, if there's only one seat left, Thais would sit there (or just stand).

Feel so sorry for the racists !!!
very cool. I wish you the best of luck. I love your story

Im going to have to push back that people not wanting to sit by you during COVID is racist. Thats not saying racism doesn’t exist here but I think there are much better and obvious examples that we have all seen
Thanks Tod. Yeah I agree there are better examples
That's resilience !👏👏
that s not racism but Covid indeed.

Thank you for covering this! 🙏🏾

Unfortunately i have heard for many years how racist people from the Hawaiian islands can be against whites.

However, what the Africans experience here is against human rights, simple as. Paid less than half of Europeans and given the most dangerous horrible jobs.
I like your outlook.
Those things that you mentioned, getting cheated, scammed and stealing are done by a small % of all races not just black. The amount of black people who do those things would be the same as any other race.
True 👍🏼
A considered and well made video Pete, thank you. Bryan is an observant and insightful commentator. I really enjoyed this approach to your content. Well done !

Why does everyone hate black people but love our culture
ABSOLUTELY! That opening scene! To see what they say about Africans in the comment section of BKK post, including apparent physician (Thai women who are the most blatantly racist in this country) is dehumanizing.
In Thailand light skin is preferable and this reflect through the society.
And most of Asia too
They’re not any better to westerners honestly
I think that if someone are black American or British, it will be OKay because of native speaker.
To them you are 100% black they don’t care if your mixed I know by experience myself
Dude you’re Black/African 😂otherwise you’d just state your nationality or ethnicity
My daughter is Thai, is white and is the victim of racism EVERY time we go out together.

The one good thing about Thailand is being a tourist and spending money there because it's cheap anyway.
There was recently huge billboards at subway station in the Siam Paragon area with black models advertising designer fashion.
I've lived in a small Thai town somewhere up north and I can assure you Thais are generally peaceful people easy to get along with because I lived there and never felt like I was I was black or foreigner.
Great video, Pete! Sad to hear of your friends experiences with prejudice. Unfortunately, there are ignorant people everywhere - not just in Thailand.
Black skin has no real power in the world
What's the issue? I don't like people being close to me anyways
Understanding that real effects of racism. In what way were you harmed by someone sitting two chairs away from you? Maybe I misunderstanding... Did someone not provide you service because of your race?
They're talking about racism in Thailand not Africa
wow totally off topic but uhh ok lol
I’m so focused on myself I don’t have time to care or worry about what other people are think😂
I’m AfrAm and always have a damn good time in Thailand!
As a black, and now married to a Thai after being here 9 years, it makes sense. And at a specific age, you stop giving a fuk. Period.
Great conversation Pete and Bryan, thank you so much for putting more light onto this sensitive matter.
But I think in some parts of Thailand racism is in born..
Thanks for watching, yes indeed a sensitive issue and it was a pleasure to do it with Bryan

I’m a African American and got nothing but love in Thailand

Being a teacher, entrepreneur, podcaster and so many other things out here in Thailand, I've been there. Tutorial centers, schools and even white teachers saying "no black teacher here! Black teachers are dumb and dirty!"
Thai women, the most racist of them all, would say "eww, black man, low-class, pimp!" This was during the height or racism in 2015.
Good choice, US doesn't have racism
Thats odd considering Puebla is very indigenous and brown people
This is the same thing that’s happening to me in the Philippines they say the same exact thing to me these people are disgusting.

Neither have I been to many countries in Asia never faced any discrimination.
You didn't have to use the word "crying" about racism! It suggests that because you haven't experienced racism, that he must be lying or making it up? Smh

Don Lemon (African/American Newsreader) interviewing Morgan Freeman (African/American Actor):
Lemon - "What, in your opinion, is the single biggest thing we could all do, to combat racism?"
Freeman - "Stop talking about it".
Don Lemon was clearly gutted. He had hoped Morgan would say "Kill whitey", or something along those lines.

Wise words there that apply to anywhere in the world
Agree with you. His mind is a problem and he s still in Thailand. Change your way of thinking my friends.

Hi Pete. Great video as always. Keep up the great work.

Same happened to me and I wasn’t never offended. I took it as kids being kids

A lot of east or central Asians don't like dark skin. I am not sure why that is.
Cheers!

Shut up no racism is comparable to what black people face

Black.White.Pink. You are a guest in Thailand. Stop the racist conversation.
Nice talk guys. When will we have a beer again and talk about lighter subjects :-)

When looking for a place to live in Bangkok, I had Thais tell me that Pratunam wouldn't be ideal because of lots of black people (Africans) there. But who knows? They were probably talking Indians and Pakistanis, too. 🤔
I have seen one or two africans there actually, and some muslims as well.
Moral of the story don't let all the smiles fool ya
Smiles was last century. They got that WHITE money now lmfao
I grew up in England and I moved to America when I was 15 years now I have America, UK and Africa accent i switch my accent ON and OFF whenever racism is knocking on my door in Thailand Brazil and DR , and I realise that this people don't love me as black person but they love me because I have America and UK accent, One time I fought to rescued my fellow African in Thailand all because of my America passport and accent... wakeup black people we don't have love and they clearly don't appreciate us everywhere we go but I felt slightly different in Philippines because most of them love black men
Excellent interview!!!!
Thanks Steve
Sometimes racism is taken as an excuse when some people don't get what they want then they will blame others. For me it will be called racism or not depends on the context culture and people involved. It cannot take what is going on in a society to judge all others.
Can you please give an example of an "excuse"?
@Copper Fox ofcause if we stay in another country we have to adjust ourselves
Rak Thais RAk Thailand samer
@@OneLifeTwoLive this person has no example because he obviously has never experienced racism before. He is insinuating that Brian the guy in the videos experience with racism is invalid because he’s using it as an excuse for not getting what he wants I don’t know what that has to do with random people coming up and touching your hair which is indeed very rude and racist even if you have never seen a black person before treating him like some type of animal.
Thanks for share the story 😀
You’re welcome Dorte
Great interview Bryan and Pete, you guys handled this heavy subject well!
Thank you Joe, glad you liked it
Black Africans are different from Black Americans, Black Africans are easier to get along with Asians, although some Black Americans are ok.
Your questions were spot on mate! Well done 😃🙏🏼
Thanks Mr Chai 🙏🙏🙏☘️🇮🇪🇹🇭
Excellent interview.
If you want to experience racism come to the US LOL there's plenty of racism for you here LOL
He’s talking about actual racism
@@azzking9305 So is he. As in George Floyd, etc. Azz hole.
America is extremely racist. It's the twenty first century fool
Mainly Black people racist against Whites
Great Interview. Respect to both of you.
Thanks Joe🙏🙏
Another Cracking Video Pete...very insightful from Brian
Thanks JP
great interview, well done. racial insensitivity is everywhere. i have a high bar for racism so....people are very thin skinned nowadays, "silence is better" is the new mantra. nobody speaks the truth in front of other races for fear of offending, and nobody admits it cos that may be considered racist! what a silly time we live in. i liked bryan, good outlook on life but the covid on the train was maybe covid fear. we moved to LA and my half thai kids get stick from young mexican immigrant kids daily in elementary school, racial stuff, told em to get used to it and deal with it, gave them tips and try and embrace them as there will always be ignorant people. i told them the offending kids were racially insensitive kids because of their parents, but no NOT racists. if they get to know u they may change as u could be the first asians they may talk to in their short lifetimes. the last thing i want is to turn my kids into victims........
If you don’t want to turn them onto victims then find people who look like them to live around. Simple as. Tribalism is never disappearing. Welcome to Nature
“That country, THAT country”!! Which country is this?
i'm thai and i can tell you that thailand is more xenophobic than racist. thailand is not plague by the misconception of black people, like the west do. it's xenophobia more than anything. discrimination in thailand apllies to neighbouring countries like laos and myanmar more. thailand does have the culture of saying bad things about foreigners right in front of them because they know they can't understand thai. but in their eyes that not a bad thing, because to me that became cultural for thai people, i don't know when it began. mostly they talked about the appearance. i've noticed it all my life.
Duet 28 37
And thou shalt become an astonishment, a proverb, and a byword, among all nations whither the LORD shall lead thee.
Good video.Sad to hear of his negative experiences.
I'm thai and I have no idea what Sii Klam means
@@lockeddown4908 สีคล้ำ
Actually we use Sii dam too, but it slowly become offensive worldwide so Sii Klam start to be use more often.
In the past, we didn't even called someone blown skin Sii Namtaan
if someone got very tan skin they will got labelled as Black too
I have had people grab my hair, arm feel my skin, during Sokran some guy hit me.

Cheers Naz
