iv been saving money to buy my first bike and all iv wanted is a cruiser (im not really into sports bikes) but man this bike has made me conflicted. such a nice bike!
+zac gibb Its a great bike. I've had it for 2 years and 30,000kms later I'm still loving it! It has the potential to be a modern looking naked bike or a modern classic depending on the the mods. A great first bike IMHO.
Hi there, Ive just purchased a 99 vtr and appreciate your service vids. Do you have a good link for PDF owners manual, and workshop manual?? Thanks again, S
Good summary, and a bonus +1 for not needing that shaken (車検)! My bike is a 400cc (CB400SF!) , so every two years I need to get it checked, and though not wildly expensive, it is another cost of riding, but as you say, if you take it to a shop/garage they can advise you on any work which needs doing. I could save some money and take it to the centre and do it myself I suppose. Ride on, sir!
Thank you! I want to upgrade to a 400cc sometime, though I'm happy about how cheap it is to maintain my 250. I really like the CB400SF. Really cool bike, and I love the sound of the engine, and it's very durable too.
10 years :) I've ridden others during that time of course, but ten years I've been riding it - everything from hours on the expressways, to unexpected offroad!. Next bike is likely a Yamaha Tracer 700 if they bring that to Japan, or maybe a used MT-09 Tracer.
Yes, it's great for filtering. I did notice that the Sv650 has a similar trellis frame and v-twin engine. I wish they made a bigger version of the VTR250, that would be really cool.
Heeeey nice vid and a spectacular bike which I have aswell VTR 2001 just got it used, sind you know the ins and outs Im facing a lack of acceleration on this bike and I put a new set of gear rings but is still more or less the same , have you faced this issue before, or is there anything I need to change Im here in Dubai and over here am probably the only one with his bike here, keep up these vidz Im checking them all one by one
Congrats on getting the bike. Lack of acceleration... hmm well I found that after changing my muffler, I had better acceleration and top speed. Aside from that, make sure that the spark plugs are in good condition, the air filter also should be checked. By gear rings, do you mean sprockets? I've done a few videos on how to change both front and rear sprockets. If you want a faster start, then you could drop go from the stock 14 tooth sprocket to 13 on the front, or do the reverse on the rear.
+Robert Smith Thanks! I know they used to import the old Honda VT 250. I think it was called the Interceptor. I wonder why they didn't import this one.
Oh, I thought that was your bike. Good idea to rent it and see Japan on two wheels. They also have a LD version, which is "low down" that's for the real shorties. It's an option with the new FI versions.
Nice. At first I didn't like the look of the VTR250F, but now it looks cool. Thought I haven't actually ridden one so I can't say. Nice mix between naked and sport.
Hi, Psych. Thank you for video about vtr250. What could you say about driving vtr250 with passenger? My vtr at the way from Japan now, and i want to know more about it. In Russia this moto not very popular, and i have too little info about it. In advance thank for answer, and sorry my Eng)
Hi there! The VTR250 is a great bike. I've seen a few videos of them in Russia, but I know it's not as common. Riding 2 up on the VTR250 can be done, but it's not the most comfortable bike for a passenger and it's not such a powerful bike. So you can do it for short trips, but I wouldn't recommend it for long trips. Then again, people don't recommend riding around the world on a 50cc Honda Supercub, but people do it and they find a way. Try it for yourself, and see if it works for you. I take my boys on the back of my bike from time to time, and sometimes my wife gets a ride too.
For being an older carb bike, the mileage is good. Especially when compared with other 250cc street bikes of it's same age. It has been easy to maintain so I'm happy about that.
Yeah, you can't beat the mileage that off-road bikes get with those thinner tires, and lighter bodies. When I was comparing all the 250cc for mileage, the best were the off road bikes. Is the CRF a fuel injection? the VTR250 with fuel injection get better mileage. But 40 km to the later is awesome.
It is a very fun bike. I'm starting to feel a little underpowered, but even that can be fun as I try to wring out every bit of HP as I can. In 18 months, I've put on over 22,000 km on the odometer commuting and touring, so the good mileage helps. I'd love to have a second bike, maybe even a litre bike (or more) for the weekends though.
such a beautiful bike! blue is my favorite color so I personally just want to take your bike for myself! haha. do you know if that bike is available in the states? or only in Japan? (Looking for a good first bike. though that bike might be a bit small for me, im 6 feet 2 inches. but I love the design)
Thanks, buddy. I don't think they have these in the states, unfortunately. I know they exported the new injection models to Europe. Australia and a few other asian countries have the VTR and I've seen a few in Russia as well. Yeah, it might be a bit small for you.
Great video dude, I really love to buy this bike but too bad this bike is not available in my country(I’m Malaysian btw) , still finding a way to get this bike from Thailand or something
Ihave one in Australia. Love it. even gets the looks and the odd gawking kid. probably because it looks like a monster lol. Good bike. Mate gets up to a 100k down his street. Only two issues i find. could be just me unless its nice and warm the bike is jerky when going low crawl speed. I am new to the game so could just be me haha. Also no fuel Gage. No idea why. But easy maintenance. Can throw things at it to fix it haha
Sounds like the engine is running a bit rough? Are you experiencing any backfire? You might want to check the spark plugs. I also wish there was a fuel gauge. I've had to switch to the reserve tank a few times.
It does well at 100km. I've kept it at a steady 120km for an hour plus on the highway without any problem. It's a bit tiring though without a wind screen. Accelerating or overtaking cars at 100km on up takes a little more road. Up to 100km it's very torquey, but beyond that it takes a little more time.
There is a couple for sale in UK at an importers. A nice '06 with less than 4k miles for £3500/$4400/490k yen. Lovely little bikes but a bit overpriced for me
Hi bro.. . Im not from Japan. But could let me know from where I can buy spares online??? .. . A japanese site may be?? Other than ebay. Im talking about engine spares. (gaskets, seals, tensioners etc ) .. . Do let me know. Appreciate your time man.
I'll be looking for a place that sells parts like that. So far no luck. I might start a discussion on the channel for VTR250 riders to discuss things and trouble shoot.
I've seen people put all sorts of bars on the VTR250. By Renthal, do you mean off-road style handle bars? Check out my Instagram account (Motor Psych Japan), I just posted a photo of a VTR250 that's been customised into an off road bike.
The windscreen is a Daytona Blast Barrier X. currently it's tilted down all the way to offer minimum shelter from the wind while keeping it streamlined looking. In the winter I tilt it up more and it blocks more wind. In this lower position I can tuck in under it on the highway, with it tilted up, it blocks most of the wind to my torso so that the wind hits the top of my chest and shoulders. I added the blue reflective strips of tape :)
Yes, they are! One of the things I love about 250s are that they are cheaper to maintain. I put a lot of kms on my bike every month, so being able to save in small ways adds up. Also I feel I can really push it to the limit. I'm making full use of all the power available.
The Xelvis is slightly older, has a larger frame, slightly heavier and has more storage space and is better for touring. Of course the VTR250 can be set up to be a tourer, by adding a windshield, adding storage etc. For me though, the VTR250 has better styling and stance.
Greetings from Chile. I bought one a few months ago. My query is what is the speed limit that can be obtained from this motorcycle, 30 km of roads daily, without this one has a posteriori some kind of fault? excuse my English
Congratulations on the bike. I'm not sure I understand your question. If you're asking what the top speed is, I've reached up to around 150 km/hour. If you're asking about the mileage I have gotten up to 30 km per litre, but my average is 28 km to the litre.
It depends on how fast you want to go on the highway. It can reach 140-150 km/h depending on how much weight is on the bike/rider, and if you've changed the muffler or not. But it'll be slower on the overtaking at those speeds.
+Johanes Victorious A decent used VTR250 (carburetor) would go for $2,000 - 2,500 USD At bike shops. At VTR250 FI (fuel injection) would be $ 2,500-3,000USD, but on Yahoo auction Japan, you could shave at least 500 dollars.

Hi there,
Ive just purchased a 99 vtr and appreciate your service vids.
Do you have a good link for PDF owners manual, and workshop manual??
Thanks again,

I noticed that the 1999 version or earlier version of the vtr250 has no tacho meter but the 2000 and onwards version has.
my 2000 has no tach, but probably a left over 1999 build. i had an original 1989 one as well
Good video. Very informative on the bike's basic points.
Hi. I race with VTR250! I l didn't know it's called "Pokemon". That's cute. I agree with you. This is a great bike♡
The VTR250 is a great little bike, I'd love one in the collection... even though I'm 1.85m and would look ridiculous on it 😄
Rob W same here 😂
With the low seat height and the position you sit I (6ft) don't look really disproportionate on it.

I said I'd sell it if it started having mechanical issues...no issues yet, but I really do need a change!
How long have you had your bike? What are you thinking of riding next?
10 years :) I've ridden others during that time of course, but ten years I've been riding it - everything from hours on the expressways, to unexpected offroad!. Next bike is likely a Yamaha Tracer 700 if they bring that to Japan, or maybe a used MT-09 Tracer.
Wow, 10 years! That's really good. I love the MT09, and would love to own one someday. The tracer looks pretty good too.
Great for filtering. The new 2016 Suzuki sv650 seems the bigger, more expensive version.
Yes, it's great for filtering. I did notice that the Sv650 has a similar trellis frame and v-twin engine. I wish they made a bigger version of the VTR250, that would be really cool.
honda would sell heaps if they made a 400cc version
They sort of did. It was the Honda Bros, a hawk GT with a 400cc engine. It was a good bit heavier than the VTR 250 though, and didn't make much power.
@@Daschickenify Yeah the Bros is nice but this in 400cc would be fine.

Is there bolt-on race cowls for this ?
Seems like a fun bike. Although I wonder if my 190cm tall and certainly not thin body would be able to ride it comfortably.
I think this is ideal for shorter riders, though I've seen some taller guys ride it. If you're 190 cm you might want something a bit bigger :)
Oh, I thought that was your bike. Good idea to rent it and see Japan on two wheels. They also have a LD version, which is "low down" that's for the real shorties. It's an option with the new FI versions.
