Almost four years since you uploaded this, but there is so much truth and good advice in these 12 minutes! Thank you, Christian. I wish you and your family a happy, healthy, productive and relaxed 2022 with hopefully much time with your loved ones and outdoors!
This entry resonated greatly with me. As someone who dreams of being able to make a living composing, the realities of turning 40 this year and the responsibilities that come with it weigh heavily on my mind. At the one end, as artists and creators we’re burdened with this nagging compulsion to make music, yet at the other end those around us, as well as ourselves as we reach middle age, tell us to hang it up, that it’ll never happen if it hasn’t at this stage of life. Listening to Christian’s words, act as a reminder to never give up on the things that matter the most, no matter what stage we are in, or what circumstances, social or personal, tell us to be. Thanks for these great vlogs Christian.
H Chris. These little videos on ideas rather than just music are so very valuable. We all get to think out loud with you and that is so very helpful. Please keep them coming and know how much they are appreciated.
My New Years resolution is to continue to refocus my energies towards my music. I've been a musician my whole life, and my goals were always to work in music, particularly in composing (which has now morphed into scoring,) but I veered off course for the better part of a decade (or two, if I'm really honest.) The past couple of months has seen a rebirth of my creativity, and it has produced been some of the most fulfilling, happy moments of my life in a long time. Onwards and upwards friends!
So many gems of gold, made inifintely better knowing you are gaining from these as well in reflection, therapy, hiking, time spent with family. A form of purity. Thank you so much.
"Anytime a Band or an Artist goes to the extreme limits of their ability, the result will always be incredible and amazing!" - John Taylor - Duran Duran
Christian, I've been watching an ever increasing amount of your videos over the past few months and I really appreciate your thoughts and insights and in bringing us with you behind the scenes. It's comforting in a way to see that we all seem to have a variation of the same struggles in this industry. I do particularly appreciate your example and thoughts of getting out of the studio and just being outdoors for part of your day. That's definitely a fantastic way to combat the sinister demon called "diminishing returns" and push against the temptation of never leaving the studio. By the way, I will also be purchasing your BBC library this week. I can't afford not to. For the past 10 years I have been using a robust East West composer's collection as well as Project Sam's Symphobia (1 and 2) True Strike (1 and 2), Lumina and Orchestral essentials. I have learned to make them work for me quite well, but the moment I heard the BBC demos and various walkthrough videos I new what I had been missing in room ambience all along. It's time for an upgrade and the BBC sound resonates with my soul. As a sound engineer also for the past 20+ years I am in sheer awe of the number of little-tol-no sleep nights that project must have taken. THANK you for the contribution you have made to the music industry. I have quickly become a fan of your efforts and content! (I compose for the 3D/4D+ stereoscopic motion ride film industry) I'm so excited to start using Spitfire product. Thanks! Alex Jenkins (USA)
I'd say that aside influences the one thing that moves you to be yourself are the deadlines, those decisions that you made being in pressure are the ones who define you in the long run, thank you so much for the video Christian, it's amazing how you encourage people to see their flaws as the things that characterize them. Much love from Bogotá, Colombia
AMEN Christian and a very Happy New Year to you! Have been enjoying the vlog immensely, getting so much out of your "fireside chats", insights, questions, and musings. So, for the last few years I've come up with a word for the coming year (this is an idea I stole from Deane Ogden), a kind of overarching theme, a focus, something to meditate on and put into practice. Last year it was "Gratitude", they year before, "Mastery". This year, it's "Courage". It means letting go of the fears that hold me back, and fully going for it in all aspects of life. The cool thing about the words and what they end up meaning for you is that they are cumulative - I've spent 2017 thinking about and practicing gratitude in what has been a very difficult, challenging, frustrating, turbulent year. Now, it has become a habit. Combined with my work to gain mastery, and my newfound push to be more courageous, I'm feeling very good going into 2018. Thanks for all you do, and here's wishing you a tremendous year!
My resolution is quite simple : to learn more than I did in 2017 about this industry and apply it by the end of the year. Mostly in the sense of income as I'm still yet to land a gig in the UK. I need to find what works for me and create a daily routine instead of when inspiration sets in. Regimented scheduling so that family and work don't clash. Have a good year mate and maybe one day I'll bump into you on a train in the God awful early hours of the morning!
boiling down to, if one loses himself into tiny deadend streets of details (witch grow very big, if looked closely) and therefore loses perspective.... very easy to get ovewhelmed by excitement of instrumentalism and forget about the soul.... good vid
Happy new year Christian :) Thank you for your beautiful words and the wisdom in them. I don't make new years resolutions, but I will this year make one. I will, like you, in my own way pursue to nurish my authenticity and encourage others to do the same. Thank you for this channel! :) ~Merlin
I hankered and hankered over buying a Strymon BigSky, my every waking thought, I watched the demos again and again. after a year I gave in and just ordered it. Now, 4 years later, its been switched on like twice? Never use it, don't really like it. I do however write a lot of music on an unplugged in electric guitar! LOL
A very Happy and Joyous new year to you Christian and, thank you for all that you do both at Spitfire and with your VLOG! I find my self entering 2018 with great optimism in my work. I think, for me, my biggest challenge will be to really take the time to learn all of the details of the libraries that I have in my collection. As most composers I likely have too many! When I have down time this year that is my main goal.
Thanks Christian. I’ve been a hermit in a cave for far too long. Got a lot out of this video, probably your best so far. Keep them coming. Happy New Year!
It's always good to go through your videos, any time. One comment - Nature - we SHOULD always come back to it. That way we keep the cycle going. The inspiration comes within. Cheers, mate :)
Happy New Year Christian! These words are gold - the human musical inspiration blender is a concept I have had in my head for years. I used to think of it as a human filter - each individual filters out what appeals their aesthetic ideals. Most apparent when you go see a concert who also likes the same composer/artist - say Bartok´s Piano Concerto No 2 and when you walk out after the performance and discuss which parts gave you goosebumps and why - two people who equally love Bartok will have totally different favorite passages and reasons for why they prefer these over the others.
This years resolution is to get my first paid scoring job! That’s it! Other resolutions will fail, that one won’t!! Happy New Year and thank you for this vlog; it is so refreshing to watch something honest, thoughtful and engaging. Cheers!
Thanks for this. I stopped drinking entirely and it's been a huge health benefit. I've also resolved to not work with toxic people. It's too much of a strain on me and my family and not worth the potential benefits. As far as composing, I've resolved to take more risks.
Very well said, Christian, the friends I've made through my adventures composing music have been some of the best I could have ever hoped to have make, I've learned countless little tips and tricks for composing even when I was limited to the crappy built in virtual instruments in a cheap DAW. My new friends and I have all developed our styles on our own, but thanks to each other, we've refined them. As for my resolution this year, it's to branch out and expand my own style for more realism in composing. Thanks for everything that you do, happy new year Mr. Henson. Michael
Happy New Year!! :D As a young composer, I think this is somewhat a great piece of advice. However, I often find this as a very complex scenario. I am convinced that all the stuff you can buy are tools and do not necessarily make your music greater or you a better composer. But, the difficult thing I often find, as I progress in my skills and career, is that seeing all the ''stuff'' people one look up to have, becomes almost a conundrum of what ''one'' or I should do, e.g. purchase all of the awesome Spitfire Audio sample libraries, great gear or an expensive composers-course in LA. ... I think it is difficult to put a hand on what it exactly is, but hopefully one day I will know. All the best Rune
Couldn't agree more - if you're studying like me I'd say make the most of working with the lovely people around you. Make the most of lovely Spitfire instruments when you need to later!
Wow, that's an awful lot of names that got dropped in 11 minutes! Love the possibilities in melding bits of Cage, Handel and Hendrix though - you've made me wonder what my trio would be. As to my resolutions , I guess it is to finish more, and to start playing with the toys I have
It is refreshing Christian to hear your insights and your thoughts on life and music career... I really like the Oscar Wilde quote which sums up my resolution for this 2018. Thanks again for your inspirations and hope one of these days we can climb up that hill of yours together; I lived in Scotland for ten years and every time I see you up there, it brings back some very fond memories I still have in my heart about Scotland and that magical land. Many Blessings and Happy 2018... Max T.
This is my favourite video you've done so far! Thank you for being so inspirational! My New Year resolutions are: spending less time sitting, spending more time in nature, visit Finland! :)
Happy New Year Christian! Both the vlog and the Spitfire content have been inspirational for me throughout 2017. Thank you so much for the efforts you put in to both of them! Its a great joy. As I'm currently building a studio, I can't run too far away from the techy bits and thoughts of what gear will help me the most are very much around... but as I agree 100% with your conclusions about self development , as always, the key is getting the balance of them both as good as possible. So I'll vote for a balanced 2018 :)
Happy New Year, Christian! My resolution is to finally set out to achieve my goal of working in the industry, instead of sitting around making excuses and feeling unfulfilled in my (working) life... Your ramblings have seriously helped me realise what I want to achieve, and I thank you for your insights and inspiration over the passed year. I wish you all the best for 2018 :-)
My resolution is to try and get out of bed at Christian O’clock and walk up Ashover Rock in Derbyshire, my nearest errrr small hill. Happy new year to all.
Happy New Year Christian. Great Vid. Very thought provoking. For me I'm going to try and drink more and work less, although I suspect only one of those two things may actually happen. As a non composer (jobbing cameraman/director) I just thought I'd say your vlogs reach beyond the composer/musician community and its refreshing to hear someone (and a grown up) in the greater Medialand talk about suff without an agenda and just with passion for what you do.Looking forward to more in 18. Thanks.
HNY Christian. Looking forward to more channel videos in 2018. For me personally i'm going to invest more in learning to play the piano. I don't feel like a proper media composer if I cant bloody well play the piano properly. Have a safe and happy new year, i'll be here watching the channel!
Happy New Year Christian! My resolution is to try and work on more projects that matter to me. Basically being a composer, but on my own terms. I think if you end up being successful in an area you don't enjoy then what's the point.
I'm a night person, but I thought to myself that what's the point of staying up late and waking up during the day (thank god for afternoon lectures) and when I can't play anything without the neighbors breaking down my door. So yeah, guess my new year's resolution is to get up early to get more stuff done. Happy new year Christian and thanks for the inspiring vlogs!
Happy new year Christian! Your Vlogs are very inspirational to me and they push my motivation. I am very grateful for that Christian! My new years resolution is to get something done quicker, without overthink anything. Well, and losing some weight and do more sport off course. :P Anyway, happy new year to all of you guys! :)
Happy New Year. Thanks for a wonderful journey so far with these, and for some really sage words as to what counts in life, going into 2018. Very best to you.
Christian Henson Music Oh awesome I didn’t know Enigma had an evo! Ah but I’m imagining something prepared Acoustic, with basically long tremolos that slow to a crawl and speed up kind of like swarm. Maybe a good blog entry would be how you plan/write out a library before recording, I’d love to know :)
Finished a simple version of my prepared guitar library and used it to make this: ruclips.net/video/0VdJWt8JTpA/видео.html - This was such a good learning experience and I'm in the glow thinking of the possibilities. Thanks for the inspiration, C.
Happy New Year! 2017 was a year full or learning. Finished my audio-engineering study, quickly went to a composer masterclass, did some courses at Thinkspace Education and even a small course at Evenant about trailer music. My new year's resolution is that 2018 will be the year that I'll put everything I've learned into use, and focus on making music! Not saying that I've stopped learning, but it's just time to put all into use :)
My ny’s rez is to continue not working for free, the same convo that helped spurn your most successful vlog to date. Music has value, and so do the people that create it.
Resolution - to push into things I fear. So often I don't start something because I'm fearful that once I finish the thing that I'm too fearful to start I will then see that I am incapable of doing with any sort of skill.
Now though it is very true that you should pursue relationships where you can be yourself, if you can not find such a relationship at all you might need to do some self-reflecting.
HNY! I want to read more books and write more music. I've just finished a project where I've written 52 tracks in 9 months and now I need to nourish my creative juices. I also want to go back to composing with pen and manuscript before even looking at a computer, at least for a bit to see how it helps or hinders.
My New Year’s resolution is to sight read music every day. It’s something I’ve put off for quite some time now. I have developed my ear and my theory to very distant places, and I’ve sort of left my sight reading skills in the dust. It’s about time I go back to the basics for a bit and catch up on that end of the spectrum.
That is one punishing NYR, I hope you have some lovely incentive like "sight read music every day and have a small cake as a reward" as part of your new dogma?
I think you should get dinosaur costumes for your kids too... have them walk single file behind you..... Kudos to your genuineness and candor. I think your vlog efforts only compliment and augment the Spitfire brand, and it bridges your customers with the company. As a customer, I don't feel like SFA is a unreachable, untouchable enterprise ....
Hi Ryan, Thanks so much, something I love so much about this project is just gradually improving in small incremental steps Kaizen style, so for me once I've done a video I watch it back and make mental notes about how I can improve things. I guess its the rare thing about a vlog where its allowed to be imperfect, so you try stuff and improve it...
Your ideas on creativity and combined influences are explored very meticulously in a free video doco series on vimeo called "Everything is a remix". News years res, don't usually make them but 2018 is the year I want to remove any differences in production/mixing quality between me and the best guys, I'm sick of being 95% there.
I was harassed and bullied in my previous job by a mob of narcissists. It killed my love for music. If someone (something) cuts our connection with our music is HELL!
Almost four years since you uploaded this, but there is so much truth and good advice in these 12 minutes! Thank you, Christian. I wish you and your family a happy, healthy, productive and relaxed 2022 with hopefully much time with your loved ones and outdoors!
Your kids' laughter is some of the best music one can and should hear in life!
Asking your kids if it's safe to cross the road, whilst dressed as a dinosaur... #lifegoals

Developing yourself is so obvious but something I completely forgot to take pride in. Genuinely pleased to have heard such a lovely message today.
What a lovely insight Christian into getting the most out of our somewhat limited lifespans with our families and friends alike....Carpe Diem!
"Litter-ly" as a piece of paper comes out of your pocket and flies away. Subtle comedy gold. 1:53

My New Year resolution is simple - to write some bloody music rather than simply thinking about it :)
This. So much this. Music, not gear.
LOL
Your kid´s laughter warmed my heart.
I think, this is one of the most important advices I had in my whole life. I wish I heard it 15 years ago.
Thanks Christian. I’ve been a hermit in a cave for far too long. Got a lot out of this video, probably your best so far. Keep them coming. Happy New Year!
Thank you Christian, this is the best advice for any aspiring composer. Happy New Year!
For me it’s very nice to see that behind the great products you sell at Spitfire there’s also someone like you. Thanks for all your videos Christian
Christian, this vlog has just given me the drive I needed to move forward on 2018 - thanks do3 much for sharing and happy new year buddy!
Rewatched this after your mention in today's video. One of my favorites.
You are amazing. Never too late. Hope your year is going well so far Christian!
Henson.
Michael
Amen. So wonderful and refreshing to hear you talk. I totally agree!
Thank you Christian for such a transparent insight and for sharing that with all of us. That's why I support you buying Spitfire Audio tools.
Christian! This right here is THE MESSAGE!! Vlog #72!!! POWERFUL!!!
Wonderful video, always a joy to watch such a brilliant mind share their thoughts and wisdom.
Happy New Year Christian and to all of you fellow followers.
Happy New Year!! :D

However, I often find this as a very complex scenario. I am convinced that all the stuff you can buy are tools and do not necessarily make your music greater or you a better composer.

Happy new year Christian!
Your Vlogs are very inspirational to me and they push my motivation. I am very grateful for that Christian!
My new years resolution is to get something done quicker, without overthink anything.
Well, and losing some weight and do more sport off course. :P
Anyway, happy new year to all of you guys! :)
Happy 2018!! I just watched #72 while trying to start working again for the first time in 2018! Just what I needed!! Thanks and happy new year!!!
Happy New Year. Thanks for a wonderful journey so far with these, and for some really sage words as to what counts in life, going into 2018. Very best to you.
Happy New Year Christian and the team at Spitfire! Looking forward to future updates/products mate!
Good words. Thank you, Christian. Happy New Year.
Happy new year Christian! I have a lot of goals this year, but one you have a lot to do with is to make my first evo guitar library :)
We've already done it??!! www.spitfireaudio.com/shop/a-z/enigma-2-the-rapture/
Christian Henson Music Oh awesome I didn’t know Enigma had an evo! Ah but I’m imagining something prepared Acoustic, with basically long tremolos that slow to a crawl and speed up kind of like swarm. The end clip made me laugh...especially the children laughing at you in the dinosaur suit. Lol
New Year Resolution: mortgage the house so I can get all the Spitfire Audio libraries
Music has value, and so do the people that create it.
happy new year christian (and everybody else^^)
Thanks for the awesome vlogs over the last year - they have been my highlight of the day :D
Love this, just what I needed to hear right now.
Thank you, the best advice. Happy new year, sheep's heid is a good pub.
One of my favourite videos of yours :-)
Don't take this as an insult, but you make a fantastic dinosaur! Happy new year, hope you took enough time to enjoy it!
happy new year, CH. thank you...
Christian Henson Music Haha, something like that. Maybe “sight read music every day and buy a new Spitfire library”
Happy New Year!!! Great ramblings :)
Excellent advice sir.
Thank you Christian for what you say !
Happy new year. My main resolution is to collaborate more with different kinds of musicians to achieve what I aim for.
A really good resolution...
A good lesson in mixed metaphors.
Like with music, never throw the skins out when blending a juice. That's where all the good stuff is. Happy New Year
Couldn't agree more...
Did you get a new camera? Or have a different color grading recipe? It’s looked good the last two videos - namely the outdoor monologues.
I like the use of the word 'Kaizen' ;)
Wonderful. Thank you Christian.
Happy new year Christian!
I'm going to make myself watch this every month.
Christian, happy new year!
This was fantastic. I needed this today.
Awesome video! Thank you for the inspiration.
What a beautiful blogpost.
You are such a wise man.
Beautiful stuff. Thanks for that year's vlogs, good sir.
And get a Vitamix, it's much better for blending.
In fact you've just set my fire nice one
Great vid mate, very inspirational. Damn, I better get off my ass this year.
Amazing video ! Really inspiring and motivating !
"Experiment - if you don't try, you don't know!" Nick Rhodes - Duran Duran
Happy new year fella
I needed this! Thank you!
Happy New Year!
Your ideas on creativity and combined influences are explored very meticulously in a free video doco series on vimeo called "Everything is a remix".
News years res, don't usually make them but 2018 is the year I want to remove any differences in production/mixing quality between me and the best guys, I'm sick of being 95% there.
Wonderful!! Wise words.
You´re 100% right. Thank you for all the awesome and inspiring content!
This was an amazing video! Thank you! :)
Output Output Output... that's my 2018. Push myself even further.
I was harassed and bullied in my previous job by a mob of narcissists. It killed my love for music.
If someone (something) cuts our connection with our music is HELL!
