- What are the witcher trials? Many of you will know of the witchers and their place in the world, but I doubt you will know how these 'freaks' came to be. In this video I explain to you about all the witcher trials such as, the trial of the grasses, the trial of the dreams and the trial of the mountains. I also go into how Geralt got his extra mutations and how geralts hair became white. I'm sure many of you have asked 'Why is Geralts hair white?' so, in today's video I decided to address it. I'll also go over some light theory's of why sad albert is known as sad albert.

A quick disclaimer - A lot of these videos use information from the witcher wiki, in some cases I do read directly from the pages, I do always make sure to include my own thoughts and other information I know myself, but I just want to make sure everyone is on the same page here. Even though I use information from the wiki, I do still create the videos, with time, effort and a lot of editing! The idea behind the lore videos is to present to information to you guys in a fun and more interesting way then you guys having to get the information from pages and read it yourself. If anyone isn't okay with this I apologise, but since day one I have always said where I get the information from. Thank you for reading.

Love the idea about the theory video on why geralt survived the extended/experimental trials. And as always love channel. Witcher George keep it up.
And what benefit Geralt got from the test trails.
JustCozItsMe yes!
@MinecraftPro15 not sure but aren't they made infertile because the born children would be insane/disfigured?
'Sad Albert" is a bad translation. It's rather grim, gloomy Albert.
Well Gloomy Albert doesn't sound as catchy as Sad Albert so that's probably why they changed it.
I mean. "Sad Albert" makes sense. Making fun of something that caused you a lot of pain is a coping mechanism
I remember Lambert and Geralt talking in tw3 when they have to charge some gizmo, and they mention the "Trial of the Medallion" where they charge their medallions with magical power, anyone else remember this?
I caught that too
@Aussie Chunda I know, I was saying that he missed the trial of the medallion
Just played tw3 and went through that part a couple days ago. Do you have a question?
Man the witcher trials were something of great contention to most of the characters in the game, so it kinda fascinated me how they made witchers who they are. But I guess mutations do wonders to the complexion ( looking at you geralt).
He's not bad for 90 haha, The complexion does deteriorate with excessive fisstech though haha
@MortalGamerDC1 85 OH shit, I literally never looked at him, you're right.
if the decoction(s) is the furnace, the mutagen(s) is the hammer & anvil.
Geralt is essentially a super Witcher especially after those additional mutagens he took in the secret lab of that alchemist
Extra mutations for the win
In books it's implayed that he is a perfect speciman. In the sense that he didn't have any complcations and pass trials smoothly.
@@xSkyWeix and the extra mutations fried his body enough to turn his hair white. Thus our famous White Wolf became a thing. What a great story 🤙
Due to his insane mutagens tolerant, he was subjected to more experimentation, enough to make him more powerful and faster than a normal witcher, and turning his hair into white, and that additional mutation he took in toussaint, damn geralt.
@@LoveKoSiVanessa Geralt's probably so durable due to his mom being a sorceress, but thats speculation
Reminds me of the spartan program, random children taken in by an organization, then trained and subjected to super soldier chemicals that kill a few of the subjects.
The Survival rate for Spartan augmentations was much higher , about 2/3rds of the Spartan 2s successfully went through the procedure, but the last third had to have further procedures so that their bodies would accept the augmentation and only small number of subjects ended up dying.
Vesemir probably kept Sad Albert just in case there would be be great need for new witchers. you know, just in case an event like i dunno... THE CONJUNCTION OF THE SPHERES happened again
Hell yeah I so wanna see new witchers. I wanna know how it used to be when kaer morhen was full with witchers, and what they do and learn, and all that stuff
Geralt well, Geralt, you see, the school of the wolf and Kaer Morhen died with Vesemir, no other Witcher would be willing to make more even if it’s needed. They might pull a Ciri to make more, but other then that I don’t know. The only still active schools are the Bear, the Gryffin, the Cat (at least those we don’t know the fate of) then I don’t know about the viper. But who knows, maybe the schools may start helping each other and make Witcher’s for each other
The hardest problem is not restoring a school a single keep can be filled with initiates easy these can be fully trained to kill monsters even without mutations only taking the most hardy to increase survivability in the mutations process if it is even used at all. The problem is preventing sabotage from jealous mages who see an existential threat in witchers or rulers angry at this sizeable growing pseudo military organization not working for their nations interests exclusively.
I never played the final dlc for Witcher 3, it’s been 5+ years since Ive played it.
This Chanel has been the perfect companion for me coming back to W3 recently for Blood and Wine. Thank you for really enriching my homecoming to this superb rpg. Now Subscribed.
Well, if you pay attention to the white frost, the second conjunction happened which means, witchers are needed again as new monsters will breed more and more. While yes, humans have developed methods to deal with them without the need for a witcher, these methods are too costly, whereas just hiring a witcher is much easier than say, an army marching to kill that one drowner nest.
Don't know if anyone here has commented on it (since there are so many comments) but the name "Sad Albert" most likely came from the experiments on "Little Albert" by John B. Watson in the 1920's.
What happened to trial of the medallion that lambert mentions to geralt
I wonder why he wasn't immune to kayran poison in the Witcher 2?
The last trial that was done on Gerald was if I'm not mistaken the trial of Elders, it's the one that caused the hair to go white, although, in theory, it was not the trial, but the extreme levels stress that the subject is put in that causes it, aka Marie Antoinette syndrome.
Just say keneki syndrom lol
Can’t wait for this part to be shown on the tv show
The show is based on the books not the games

Trial of the grasses: turning Gollum into Elrond.

It’s called sad Albert probably because “sad” it’s a bummer to have to go through and “Albert” because it needed a name and there it is. I don’t think it’s too deep.
I know I'm 3 years late but have you ever heard of the baby Albert experiments? I wonder if that's a clue to the name of the table.

he probably kept it just in case there would be be great need for new witchers. you know, just in case an event like i dunno... THE CONJUNCTION OF THE SPHERES happened again
Sad Albert is probably a reference to the psychological experiment preformed on a child named Albert. It was done in the 1920s by J.B Watson, who is one of the behaviorists. Not the most ethical experiment. But hey, who was ethical in the 1920s...?
I think Being a witcher would be ok, the transformation sounds a bit messy
From my hazy recollection of the books, all of the white hair, specific eye changes, and other oddities, this was just random sideeffect of the trial of grasses. Infertility and immunity was a certain effect, the visual changes were extra and were specific to the individual.
During the Kaer Morhen quests in Witcher 3 the trial of the elements/mountain is where they attune their amulet to magic I believe. This is the quest where you can ill Old Speartip, and attune/charge the phylactery.
Would this make Avellach a half Witcher?
If the trial of grasses can lift curse like uma why not try it to werewolf and save Baron's wife???
I've always wondered if elves or dwarfs were able to go through the trials and become witchers or maybe only humans are able to become witchers because their bodies are more "simple"
The concoctions were probably made specifically for humans.
Cat school witchers are usually elves.
@@sirderpington4489 werent they insane school of the wolf witchers?
@@nistor_bogdan_ no, most Witcher schools have a mental trial to make sure they are sane, if they don't pass I doubt they just let them leave after all that hard work to make them a Witcher, the school of the cat doesn't have this trial though so they usually end up insane, also it's stated in the games that cat witchers are usually of "elven stock"
Half elves yes with cat witchers and they are very emotional because of hyperactive hormonal glands. Think roid ragers one might generally be a friendly person but when facing trouble they'll impulsively lash out. A witcher constantly faces danger head on so guess what cat witchers do.
Trials aren't over until you slay a sorceress.

Crossover Question: Can Percy Jackson survive the witcher trials without the drawbacks like sterility?
witchers have it rough man
The trials are lore friendly, I found them mentioned in the book around the time when Geralt meets Avallach for the first time. The idea is that the trial of dreams tested a witchers psychic and his ability to withstand scary s**t and the mounatin made sure they didnt go mad.
yes!
I really wish they would make a game about Geralts early life. Like when he was going threw his Witcher trials.
A prequel with him being taught and going on quests with other master witchers would be cool
I feel part of the cool factor is the ambiguity of it. We dont know what made him who he is, and the horrible things he went through are made that much more terrifying because we can only speculate. In the absence of detail, the mind fills in the gaps. And those spaces are where true horror lies
@@marcperez2598 Your take seems fair, I like it.

there is actualy quest in second witcher two alchemists ask Geralt to drink experimental potion, and in third witcher you can find a letter in Oxenfurt in wich they assume the potion would give Geralt his 'fire' back and he is potentialy could have kids. Considering that witchers is dieing breed it could be safer option to have many MANY other witchers(or just people with witcher abilities)

How long do we have to wait to get to the trails?
I recently found your channel and love your content. I’m also a Witcher fan so have been watching all your content. Great work, thanks.
Np man, glad you enjoy it!
Think you forgot about the Trial of the Medallion, in which young witchers would have to swim across the murky lake near Kaer Morhen, Cross the caves in which a restless Cyclops slept and then get past three ornery rock trolls. All this to make it to the Circle of Elements and collect their medallion. I suppose you left it out since it's only present in the games?
You find the Trial of dream explained in Witcher 1: at Kaer Morhen there are journals and Lambert and Eskel explains the Trials to Geralt.
You forgot to add, slower body aging
And mental.
An Article was released after the netflix show saying Geralt's body is immortal in terms of aging, and death to natural causes, but can be killed through strong mortal blows via a monster or whatever
Did Sapkowski say that? And is it the dpecial, or the regular mutations?
@@theblancmange1265 He did say that. Plus it's in the games. Geralt got killed by someone with a pitchfork stab. I think it's Witcher 2 or 1(I can't remember). His body ages much more slower then normal human
@@brandonwalker1609 Didn’t need the show to know that. Geralt is around 100 years old by the time the Witcher 3 takes place and Vesemir is over 300 years old.
The cool stuff a Witcher gained from the Trial of the Grasses:
- Superhuman strength (the exact level is unknown) and reflexes (bullet timer)
- Superhuman speed (they can move FTE) and agility
- Superhuman stamina and durability
- Super senses, like hearing, sight and smell. Some sort of sixth sense that alert Witchers about a close danger. Night vision and immune to flash lights
- Healing factor, immunity to virus and disease. Very slow aging, and strong resistance to alcohol
- Superhuman immune system, able to drink all sort of potions
- Good resistance against mind control
And resistance against child support
@@alirezaasgharian6754 Right :P Strength level is subject to interpretation. In Witcher 2 Geralt was strong enough to smash a Dragon on the ground while he was flying. I could say a strength above someone like Wolverine, so, above class 3 tons, but I don't know.

There's also a trial of the medallion. The one with old speartip in witcher 3.
That trial is only in the games and I believe that it is basically 'The Choice', they just liked to call it the trial of the medallion in the games.
Really not important, but your immune system doesn’t deal with toxins your metabolism is what matters.
The storys sad albert could tell...
Not need in the modern witcher world. But there are mosters every where. How bad was it in the past
Very bad
Late reply but the abundance of monsters in the witcher games is likely just for gameplay purpose, otherwise it'd be boring. In the books i remember geralt taking on a contract for one or two drowners, and even that being a bit of an ordeal and the only work he'd gotten for a while.
Bad enough that they felt the need to create this whole process to begin with, and subject large numbers of children to almost certain death.
Sick Video lad! I'd like to see some more lore vids on Skellige. They're pretty much Irish Vikings from what I can make of them. Stay stylish my man!
Willy Oakenshlong they remind me of Scottish and Irish people so Celtics
I would say the folk from Skellige are a mix of celts and norse because they definitely have scottish inspiration as well as irish but there is obvious norse influences as well
Angry Devil Gamer Yeah I can see that, I reckon they're a massive crossover between Celts and Vikings
Lewis John Completely agree lad
Pretty sure they mention the other two trials in The Last Wish Geralt is talking to the priestess Yolla.
I could be wrong though

great video! I'd love to know more about the more rare and outlandish monsters in the witcher world, we all know drowners and neckers, but I'd love to hear about the truly bizarre things Geralt has faced in his travels.
I plan to do a video on the manticores soon!
So... basically, Witchers are just Magical Halo Spartans
Love your channel. Great content good job man

Geralt's other experimental trials probably makes him die in a 3 foot cliff if he jumped on it...
There is a Trial of the Medallion in which the witcher will go to the circle of elements in order to activate their medallion. This would be the final trial according to Lambert and Geralt. They talk about the trials when going to prepare the phylactery for Yennefer.
So happy I found this channel
Long video ??Dude this is short for me,and because im a huge fan of the books and games like all the people here,I can listen to you all day.
Aha thanks man!
I remember Lambert mentioning the Trial of the Medallion in the Witcher 3 which if I remember was like a candidate Witcher is sent off on a dangerous path and he who returns with his medallion is ready to set off and be dubbed Witcher or something like that
I think it's the game name for 'the choice'
Thanks for the great video
Np man, glad you enjoyed it!
In the Witcher 2 Letho says that Nilfguaard are going to rebuild the viper school of witchers
And in the witcher 3 its showed that instead the emperor sent assassins after him and you help Letho escape
So why do they teach the children first instead of doing the mutations first, it seems like a waste of resources because most either die or go insane
Trial of the medallion?
That's just a game thing and they really didn't include any info on it, we can assume that the trial of the medallion was blended with 'The Choice'
I like this video. Learning game lore is helping to make the show more interesting.
I think you go through a trial in the Witcher 3 sorta in a side quest with lambert or eskel. It’s a trial where they go through a dangerous forest and have to beat a monster in a cave or something could be mistaken
Something i learned VERY quick in this game; always have white honey if you're going for a fight that's heavily reliant on potions. Otherwise, keep your distance, spam food and shields. (Can't remember the name of the sign all of a sudden...) Tip from an apprentice witcher to a novice.
When I played that part of the game, the sound glitched and went silent on just the voices
I'm pretty sure the sad Albert used to not have straps until Alberts trial which went very bad
This has probably already been stated, but it must suck being a Witcher. Taken in at a young age and forced to train and get experimented on, only to have a 30% chance of survival. Then you live decades(if you're lucky) fighting gross monsters and bandits till you either give up or die.
Geralt is living the good life tho
Tyler Baldwin Lambert does mention hating it after he tells you how he was taken and his sister dying of old age
i thought "sad albert" was the specific table in kaer morhen
Imagine if uma was ciri and it made her critical then yenefer suggested to save ciri they have to complete the trial hence turning her into a mutant witcher.
She'd have not survived the trial at all and perished. The same reason why there's only male witchers and no female witchers, women and men have different body hormones, and only male hormones can handle the decoction, and that too not very well as it kills there reproductive system, making them infertile.
@@anantrawat2311 no false

Multitasking - witcher style
Supposing the trials were in chronological order I doubt the Trial of the Medallion could be considered as part of ''The Choice''. When Geralt and Lambert discuss how did they pass the rock trolls at the mountain Geralt was apparently already able to perform Axii on the trolls in order to pass them. Under assumption the young boys were not capable of already casting signs before any trials or witcher mutations were performed? (I found no info about at what stage do the Witchers learn to cast signs)
I don't see how mutations would allow them to use signs?
