  • The late '60s and early '70s proto metal band Dust has rereleased their first two albums as one Sony Legacy release and singer-songwriter-guitarist and co-producer Richie Wise spoke with Artisan News about what happened to them, Marky Ramone's talent in the band, and chances for a reunion.

Brilliant musicians all 3 of them. Thanks so much Ritchie Wise for 2 of the best albums in rock history.
Hard Attack is my favorite album of all time.

The STELLAR career accomplishments of the members of this band are far-outshined by their work as "DUST". These guys were the hardest driving, most talented musicians to be recorded - ever. How tragic it is they are not in the H/O Fame with the music they made on these 2 albums. Buy them - listen and enjoy. I still enjoy this music and get something out of it every time I listen to it - still.

Kenny Kerner & Richie Wise (also with the late Kenny Rogers) also produced the pop trio Gunhill Road whos "Back When My Hair Was Short" went to # 40 (Hot 100 1 week) & # 37 (Adult Contemporary) on June 2, 1973. That was their only charted song. The song "Sailing" reminds me of America "Riverside" (from the 1972 self - titled album). The song "Sag Harbour" reminds me of The Bee Gees. The song "Callin' Atlanta" reminds me of Crosby, Stills & Nash. Finally, the song "We're Almost Going Home" reminds me of Joni Mitchell. All songs from their 2nd & final album on Kama Sutra (which was reissued by Wounded Bird) & also download on Apple iTunes (with bonus tracks).

As a fellow Brooklynite, I have an obvious affinity for Dust. Monumental band. But Sabbath was first and created metal as we know it.

I don't think it was any one group that started Metal. For instance, Deep Purple's In Rock clearly went for the throat in 1970 as did the first Sabbath album. In addition to bands like James Gang, Mountain, Zeppelin in that same year, there were also a few highly influential but relatively unknowns - Sir Lord Baltimore, Coven, Stone Axe...hell, even Billy Joel's Attila.
