Since I started trimming back (deadheading) my Salvias they flourish again with another set of flowers! Yay! Then I can enjoy them longer! I look for their next sets of buds coming out.
Thanks for the helpful tips. We just planted these along our walkway on our new landscape we put in. Suprised to see how wide these will grow!! Ours are pretty small atm with just a few purple flowers but they have browned so that’s why I’m here. Do you live in a snowy state any advice for winterizing this fall? Thanks!
Thanks for the comment! I live in Utah so we get a lot of snow. In the fall cut them down completely to the ground. They come back and look great the following spring.
Thanks for watching! I will deadhead the spent blooms usually 3-4 times from spring-fall. Then I cut them back to the soil in the late fall before winter. I hope that helps.
Awesome! It may show some stress for a bit, but it should come back and look great. Consider giving it a little extra water to get ‘er out of the stress. Thanks for the sub and comment!
Fall is the best time to completely cut them back to the ground- but you can cut them down anytime if overgrown, it just takes them longer to grow back. You can cut off the spent flowers any time of year and they’ll bloom again within a couple of weeks. Should be able to get about 3-5 blooms per year.
@@HomegrownHowTo Thank you! I had beautiful Salvias a few years ago in my old garden but I was always so sad after their first bloom because I just thought it was done for the season. Then it wouldn't look great the rest of the season. Thanks for the helpful information!!
Hi, thanks for the comment. Yes they can seed like crazy. Even when I do cut them occasionally seeds will drop and germinate. I’ve moved the starts around my yard plenty of times. It’s a really cool plant but can easily get out of control if you don’t tend to them.
@@silviamaria1000 these are typically very drought tolerant plants. If they are newer plants or just potted they may need more water until they fully establish themselves. But once established they won’t need much.
Thanks for the question. I would say so. Every fall I cut them down to the base and start fresh in the spring anyways. With temps cooling off it’s the best time to do that. Best of luck!
Thanks! In my experience, no. If you happen to cut all the way to the ground, just make sure you keep it watered a little more that normal. If you just cut off the spent flowers (best method for getting more blooms) you shouldn’t need any extra TLC. Hope that helps!
They can get pretty wide. Probably about a 3ft spread while the base remains fairly small. What I’ve done when I don’t want them that wide is I’ll dig up about half of the roots to maintain size. They are very hardy and beautiful. You won’t regret using them, but they do take a bit of maintenance. If you don’t prune or cut down they can look quite ugly once the blooms stop.
Thanks for subscribing and your comment! I appreciate it! That has never happened to me. My bet is that they will go purple as the flowers mature. I do have a couple of pink Salvias and they are my favorite. So if yours happen to stay pink, consider yourself lucky! The pink variety has much more of a “pop” in the garden.
This can be a sign of under or over watering. If your soil is wet about an inch down I would hold off on watering it for a week. These plants don’t need much water if established. Could also be pests.
I had no idea that Salvia Sage would flower again if the spent blossoms are cut off. Thanks for the wonderful tips.
Absolutely! Thanks for watching and for the comment. Best!
Same here! I just thought they were just done. i just cut mine back after the first few minutes if this video!
It is very helpful! After checking few videos, I found this video what really answered my questions.? Thanks

Thanks for the comment! Glad it was informative. You’ll be getting some beautiful blooms again in no time! Take care!
Thanks for information. I just planted 2 Salvia in indiana
Nice you’ll love them! Thanks for watching!
the trimming of the salvia starts at 2.09. he does talk beforehand about how you can lop the entire bush and it will regrow!

Thank you so much for very informative video. Can salvia plant be planted in early February?🇬🇧
Thanks for watching! Depending on weather it may be a little cold. If you’re having freezing temps at night I’d wait until temps come up a bit.
Thanks for your video. Can you please tell me at what stages in the flowering season you cut back and trimmed your salvias?

These are great plants! You’ll love it.
Is this done just in the fall? Not clear on what time of year this is done.

So if you cut it back after each bloom is done will you have color for the rest of the seasoj if you continue to do this???
Yeah it takes a few weeks for them to bloom again but you should get about 4 separate bloom cycles from late spring through fall. 👍

Thank you for the info. Does salvia need fertilizer?
It shouldn’t. I’ve never fertilized mine. They’re pretty hardy plants and do well with little water. Thanks for watching!
What zone are you in and are they perennials? If so how do you manage them during winter?
I am in Zone 6b/7a. They are perennials. In the late fall I just cut them down to ground and they’ll grow back the following spring.
Hi..if u leave the flowers do u get seeds for new plants....and do u propagate the cuttings...thanks

I have some salvia in a big pot. It's getting a lot of sun/heat here in Houston. How often should I water it?
They really don’t need much water. Probably about 1 inch of water per week
@@HomegrownHowTo wow.
I’ve been watering her everyday as I see the soil looking dry .

Sorry this was posted a while ago but try adding mulch to the top of your pot!
My Salvia is spindly and the leaves start about 12” from the base. Should I go ahead and trim it to the base?

How long do they bloom and how many times do they REV loom in a season? Thank you.
They bloom about 6-8 weeks. I cut them back 2-3 times from Spring-Summer depending on the maturity of each plant.
