At the end of every academic year, students are required to move out from the dorms. However, its unreasonable to be asked to do so in a short span of time (less than 24 hours). I had to move out on the same day as my last final, and I don't have a car (nor anyone to help) like majority of the American students. I was also the only international student in the floor I lived. The RA I had, who is nice and welcoming at the beginning of the academic year, became aggressive and started to drag out all of my personal belongings from my former room when I had not vacated it by the time I signed up for, which is the last slot at 5pm. He also knocked on my door like 10 times in an hour (close to 5pm), which is harassment to me. The entire move-out process is very rushed/occurred too rapidly. I was also fined $25 for a late check-out. They never considered the predicaments I'm faced with (e.g: I'm an international student who doesn't even have a car nor anyone to help, and I only have one suitcase and less than a day). You don't rush people, when you are not helping in the move-out process at all. We should have been given a week to move out.
(p/s: I experienced the same problem in the final year I was there, although I lived off-campus. I lived in Drake West Village. As I remembered, the RA/RHC of the dorm I lived at did not even want to sit down with me to discuss/negotiate on whether I can be given more time to vacate my room, which I requested for on the week before finals. I'm not saying that I must be given more time, but the least you could have done is to be more considerate and listen to me. This is very disappointing and unacceptable for a 5-star private university.)
As a non-US student, I experience difficulties in moving in and out, as I don't have a car (and storage) like majority of the American students. I'm not even able to cope with my studies, so it is very challenging to move out/arrange for move out/vacate my room/etc on my own in less than 24 hours after my last final (which I waited until my finals are over to start packing). This is against something called a COMMON SENSE.
(p/s: I'm an international student in a foreign land, so my predicaments are different compared to local American students. And therefore, the first person I turn to is the International Office, followed by the International Student Association, who are both unable to help me in moving out. This is very disappointing. And thus, I lost most of my stuff to Goodwill, as they were 'donated' by the university. That's like damaging personal property. I'm now entitled to file a claim against the university.)
Ironically, to my disappointment, when I brought this up to the International Office, they were not able to help at all. Neither did the Office of Residence Life nor the Management Office (i.e: I lived in Drake West Village in my final year there). And none of my friends wanted to help me when I asked around (i.e: they are from the CF/Malaysian Student Association and they have a car). This has caused a lot of inconvenience to me, and I lost most of my personal belongings to Goodwill (when they could have been sold). I can't just drop off everything I have and leave just like that. How can you call yourself a world-class university, when you have no consideration on the predicaments/difficulties that the international students have to going through? We are paying to attend the university, just like the local American students. And I was also part of the Drake community. This is highly unacceptable for one of the top colleges in the Midwest. I don't come all the way to US to experience this kind of humiliation.
(p/s: An International Office that isn't able to help international students on a mandatory move-out process is an international embarrassment to me. I would say I have done what I can with what I had/what was available (e.g.: the International Office, Office of Residence Life, the Management Office of Drake West Village, the two RAs I had in freshman and sophomore year, the CA I had at Drake West Village, and my friends from the CF/Malaysian Student Association, none of which were able to help). I was quite tempted to express my frustration by creating a scene at the Management Office of Drake West Village. So, that's my Drake experience - a negative more than positive experience.)
Hence, the way I was treated/what I described above has given me a strong negative impression of the university. Its not a problem of language barrier or cultural difference. I have every right to be outraged. I also have every right to condemn the university, as I paid to attend the university. On that basis, I'm now entitled to file a claim against the university.
(p/s: On a subjective note, I now learned that Drake's reputation as one of the top colleges in the Midwest only applies to its academic programs/rigorous curriculum/mid-sized campus/ROIs of alumni/Actuarial Science/etc, and not helping others when they need it most. That's my present impression of the university. It seemed like the university is more catered to local Americans than international students.)
    Sincerely,
    A former Drake student

@@keatianyeoh4277 Who do you think you are? A member of Saudi royalty? Being required to leave the dorms within 24 hours of your last final is standard at virtually all universities, not just Drake. It's a reasonable time and it's not like we bring every possession we own into our dorms. You shouldn't wait until the very last minute to start packing and you certainly don't need a week to do so. In fact, the only thing you should need to pack up on the final day is your bedsheets, blanket and pillow, which takes like 30 seconds. Everything else should already be packed, including clothes. It's also pretty silly that you expect Drake to hire helpers to pack your things for you or that you're blaming Drake for the off-campus apartment's policy.

@@posysdogovych2065 Excuse me, but I'm entitled to make an opinion as I have paid a price to attend the university, just like other American students. I don't think its ridiculous to be given at least a week after finals to move out. I don't think its wrong to only start packing after completing my finals. As I said, I don't have a car nor anyone to help like majority of the American students, so its impossible for me to move out in less than 24 hours.
I did not say that I'm expecting Drake to hire helpers to pack my stuff, but I have every right to be outraged, as I lost most of my personal belongings to Goodwill as no one wanted to help me. Your comment above only adds salt to the injury. You stupid a**hole.
