I have not only not liked but arguably hated the SG for 40 yrs of guitar playing; all without having ever played one. Then last month I bought a new cherry 2020 61 Epiphone SG on a whim. Absolutely love it! What a moron I was/am🤦‍♂️. Great tone, light weight body. Personally I prefer to the Les Paul. I’ll have to see if I can justify this as well...I mean it’s a different colour. That will make all the difference surely. Great work as always Colin!

Thats how I was with Fender Telecasters and Gibson Les Paul's. My advice to people who are happy with their Epiphone Les Paul's, DO NOT play a Gibson, because...now I have 3 Gibson Les Paul's and I'm about to sell off my last Epiphone and other LP type guitars I've hung on to. I'm actually waiting for the Gibson SG Modern to arrive, then I'll be ok with selling my perfect Epiphone Tony Iommi SG, but only ok...barely at that lol.

I had the same thoughts. In the 70’s we couldn’t get those to stay in tune. I have around 2-dozen guitars, but I’m sure I’ll get one…. as I’m watching this :)

@@kennethh2430 That's funny I am pretty much the opposite... I have owned multiple Gibsons for many years and since I started acquiring the latest Epiphones I have sold a couple of Gibson custom shop models because actually I don't really see the point in keeping them any more. We all have different inspiration and motivation I guess and it's just not possible to say one is better than the other because it entirely depends on your perspective.

Soon after I watched this, I was able to find an unplayed 2013 in Classic White, which if I did my research correctly are pretty much identical to the '61 standards, with the only difference being the 2013 version has the smaller headstock, which I believe is more period correct, also I just really love the look of white SG's.

An homage to the one Hendrix played circa ‘69 although stop tail no vibrato bar. I believe it had rosewood not ebony fingerboard. Recently watched a few old videos with Joe Walsh after seeing his product demo for his new signature PRS. He showed how to set up a Gibson Les Paul entirely by ear and feel. He gave the same tuning advice - always tune up. If the string ever went out of tune during his setup, he would pull the string up quite vigorously to stretch the string and reseat it in the nut and bridge and then tune up to pitch. Works for me as well. I love my Epiphone SG.

I'm an acoustic guitar player and bass player. I have tried for years to find an electric guitar that I felt comfortable with and had the sound thats in my head. I received a gift from my wife in the form of a less expensive Epiphone SG VE and couldn't believe the instant connection. I have a hard time putting it down. Will probably upgrade at some point down the road but who knows. Just to say there's a guitar for everyone....just got to find it. Thanks for the video

I came across your channel a couple of days ago. Congratulations, I really appreciate the work you put in and how you structure your reviews, talking about the facts and talking about the feelings/emotional side of the guitars you review. Back to the SG°s, the SG is probably an underrated guitar. I owned 3 of them and I loved them for their great tonal variety, their ease of play, the light weight and great playability = just pick them up and play, it is fun. I had one Gibson SG with P90s, loved it, an Epi 61 SG re issue with 490R / 490T and an Epi Prophecy with Gibson Dirty Fingers (a hell of a pick-up and Single Coil split). Only the Prophecy had a neck-dive problem (but heavily) and according to my research that was due to the leight-weight body, the heavier ebony fingerboard and the massive Grover tuners. However I liked it too. And do not be mistaken, you can play almost every style with an SG, it also makes for a great slide guitar. Great review and inspiring for those who haven*t tried an SG yet.

Today at Guitar Center I checked out one Epiphone after another down the line. 9 out of 10 have a really skinny, flat neck. My Epiphone LP Standard has that flat neck. Hurts my hands to play it very long. My 2021 Gibson SG Standard has a slightly thicker neck, found…perfection. The main thing that keeps me from buying another Epiphone isn’t snobbery or poor build quality or QC, it’s the flat necks.

I rented a used Epiphone SG G-400 1966 Standard Reissue from SamAsh for a weekend when I was starting to take guitar seriously about four years ago and I fell in love with SG's. Then for my birthday that year, my parents got me a brand new version of the same guitar! It is absolutely my most played, right next to my dad's vintage LP. I have done so much troubleshooting on it (tuning still isn't perfect lol) and it has taught me so much about playing and working on guitars, I don't think I'll ever get rid of it. I'm 18 and going into college soon and that guitar is the one I plan on taking. Cheers! 👍

Man, as always you take the right amount of time to properly run through things in the correct way.
I actually had one of the Richlight SG 61s back in 2017. I actually loved the guitar but didn’t like the look of the board. It was too smooth for me and didn’t feel right so I parted with it. What I really like about the Epi SGs is the lack of binding on the body. On the LP Epis, it’s the body binding and where it meets with the finish that typically falls short in the qc area. I’m just nit picky about binding on any guitar at any price.
Furthermore, with the Custom you get block inlays, ebony board and binding everywhere. It’s kind of a no brainer really. I own Gibsons and the Epiphone fits right in after a little TLC.
    Let’s see, 629 vs $3,799 🤔

The big problem with many models and brands of guitars is that the strings don't sit straight and completely in the nut groove, but maybe 2/3, and the rest go over that plastic on top and that's where the string loses tuning stability, especially G and D. At least I have such experiences. All the best Collin, always a pleasure to see all your posts! Beautiful and gentle Playing from 23:44 - 25:30! Very very nice, with soul...

My first two Gibsons were an SG Delux, which I really do wish I still had, and an early 70's SG standard with an ebony neck and bock inlays with no binding. Gibson's from that era get some stick, but these two were really good, both were looked after by a top tech. I also have Seymour Duncan 59's on my Heritage H555 and they sound fabulous.

It's me again! Another great video. I almost bought one of those SG Customs recently. I was in Houston, TX and stopped by my favorite guitar shop and they had just sold the one they had. Instead, they had a black Epiphone Les Paul Custom and I was glad to finally get one of those in my hands. I asked if they had a white one and of course with stock being what it is right now, I was told they had one coming in, but no idea when it would get there. I had store credit from selling them a Stratocaster that I never played, so I used that and had them reserve it for me. It was good timing as well, I got the price locked two days before Epiphone raised the price!
Probably a good thing that there is a wait since I still have to pay off that Slash LP I bought from Sweetwater. That guitar is growing on me.
I was really curious how the stock pickups would sound on the Epiphone SG Custom. I like them! The SG Custom is still on my list, but I am also considering just saving up for a Gibson SG Standard since the price on those aren't nearly as high as their Les Paul Standard brethren. Or, I could just save up and get both... Would be a shame otherwise, wouldn't it?
There is one thing you brought up that I wanted to ask you about. I was considering putting in the Gibson 490/498 in the (hopefully coming soon) LP Custom so that it would sound more like its Gibson counterpart, but you really didn't seem to like them. My biggest reservation is that my last remaining Gibson Les Paul has them installed, well the older versions as it is from 1997, and I like that all of my guitars right now have different sounds. What is it about the Seymour Duncan pickups that you put in your SG that you prefer? There so many options and I am not well versed on them. I've always loved the clean tones from the neck pickup on a LP Custom when playing a more jazz style.

    • @theguitaristas
      @theguitaristas  2 года назад +1

Hey Jeremy, I'm still thinking about maybe getting a Slash LP as there's some good deals going now and thought it may be interesting to compare to the Lazarus etc... and I like some of the designs! On the subject of the 490/498 pups I find them a bit too 'hot' for the sort of sounds I'm looking for, I am no expert at all but I think they are maybe designed for higher gain stuff, so I never think twice about changing them. The Seymour D '59's are a bit more vintage sounding PAF like, as are Burstbuckers (or can be in the right guitar)... there so many choices and it's all trial and error anyway so who knows the answer? Anyway let us know where you end up and what with!

As I get older, I still love the gain, but am trying to play slower and a wider range as my hands just don't have the shredding dexterity they once had and honestly, I am ok with that. I recently had my Gibson LP professionally setup due to the arthritis and that "vintage" 490/498 combo just sounds awesome. It's hard to believe I've had this guitar for 23 years and am just now realizing how good it is. Considerably better playing and sounding than the recently added Epi R9 and the Slash, not that either are anything to sneeze at. I figured if I can get a set of those into the Epiphone LP Custom, I would be happy. Those are what I am comparing everything else to. So far, I haven't heard anything that is considerably better all around. Most are a little better here, or a little worse there.
I look forward to your next video!

I got an SG for the first time about two months ago, and I had no idea that the top horn was higher than the lower horn. I always thought that they were equal. I didn't like the design until I played it, now, well damn, it's a great guitar.

    Colin,
Several months ago, I bought my first SG. It’s the SG Supra with 4 pickups! 3 57 Classic Humbuckers and a Fishman Power Bridge, piezo saddles!
Mine is Antique Natural in colour, she is beautiful. And sounds absolutely amazing.

Nice one, wow 4 pickups!!... sounds pretty versatile that one and definitely the kind of SG Frank Zappa would have approved of!

This is a fantastic video if someone is contemplating the purchase of an Epiphone. It's so great to see that the company has upped it's game quite a bit. Thanks so much. I feel more comfortable about buying one. Nice playing too.

What? A vid where I haven't already left a comment? Well, here goes. Excellent film as always. Sweet guitars. I have the Epi SG Custom and an 2018 Gibson SG Standard ('61 style). Both Ebony. Both beautiful. Both killer. If one can only have one humbucker equipped SG, then the Epi Custom is the one, IMO. Cheers!
