One question, at the end of the video (around 12:42) you said hữu ích, but it sounded more like hiêu-ích, i assume that's how people normally pronounce it, without the dấu ngã on hữu? Do you think learners should try to focus on realistic natural pronunciation like yours, or on perfect standard pronunciation?
I think there is no such thing called "perfect standard pronunciation" in Vietnam. In Hanoi, we always pronounce "ưu" as "iu", like "hữu ích" actually sounds like "hĩu ích". And "ươu" as "iêu", example "rượu" is pronounced as "riệu"
@@SlowVietnamese thank you for the reply! Is 'prescriptivism Vs descriptivism' a debated thing for Tiếng Việt? It's like the idea that... We should describe and learn languages the way people speak them. Or we should describe and learn languages the "standard" way. Cos my (Hanoi) girlfriend firmly believes that I should say hữu, not hĩu. She wanted to do radio/tv work and really tried to work on having that "standard" accent. But i think she sometimes says riệu for rượu, just as you said 😄
@Sam Stanton It depends on the background and positions. People from high positions usually speak differently from the rest. Although I'm pretty sure they wouldn't use that way when communicating with family, friends. We always know that spoken language is different from the reading. About "proper pronunciation", I don't know anyone from TV / podcast fields so I can't say. But I'm pretty sure many MC from national broadcast VTV1, VTV3 pronounce "ưu" as "iu",... like us. This video is 1 example: ruclips.net/video/yuTrG4PAMdI/видео.html Anyway, its all about other people choices. If you want to speak with normal Vietnamese, you can go with "iu", cause I still barely meet someone would pronounce "ưu" as "ưu". But if you feel like you want to speak like in the textbook, you can use that way.
A quick question. 24 hours layover at Danang airport. Is it possible to get a college student with bike who can show me around Danang and Hoi An. I can pay but I dont need professional tour guide. Just a college student who wants to make extra income out of their leisure time. Thanks
