- Just one hair-raising turn off of I-17 lies a perfect adventurous trifecta - mining relics, Indian ruins, and astonishing canyon views. The Richinbar Mine Trail and Pueblo is just a short hike across Black Mesa and perfect for a weekend adventure.
High up on a mesa by the Agua Fria Canyon are a few scattered remains of past communities. An easy 2.3-mile loop trail leads to these forgotten places.
To find this location, one must travel north on I-17 from Sunset Point and shortly thereafter is a small dirt parking lot to the right of the Interstate. Use caution exiting and make sure to park as far away from traffic as possible. Here you will see a gate intended to keep cattle from making their way to traffic. The gate is often locked but as the land is public, people are allowed to pass through on foot. Down the trail, visitors will find old remains of what was likely once a ranch but the real goods are further down near the canyon's edge.
First off, the views are positively stunning. Make sure to take time to stop and take them in. You will not be disappointed!
To the north of the trail lie a number of boulders with some well-preserved petroglyphs. Some of the best we've seen!
To the south of the trail are the remains of Richinbar Mine, a gold mine from the early 1900s rumored to have extracted nearly 8000 tons of ore.
In the middle of the loop of the trail are rock wall remains that once was a pueblo of Native American groups that once called the area home.

I was born in AZ and grew up in Black canyon city. That windmill has been there all my life and I'm 52.
WOW. This is amazing. So glad I got your invite! The views are awe inspiring. The petroglyphs n scenery are beautiful. Definitely glad I came. Thanks guys. Hi Amy.
Always glad to have you along. ☺️
Glenn, really enjoyed this. I love seeing history in places that I have passed many many times over the years. Thanks for documenting history.
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching! 😄
Holy cow, the number of times I've driven past there and never even given it a second look. Crazy that all that amazing stuff is literally just feet from the freeway. Thanks for the new discovery!!
You and me both! There is an absolute treasure trove of historic things back there to discover it seems! 😊
Wow 😮 you don’t want to fall down that mine!
Yeah, even though they're all likely plugged up in there it would still be pretty hard to get out of.
Yep wonderful trail and views on ground and aerial. Love the brick find and manufacturer information. Great stuff thank u
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! We had a great time exploring and digging to find the info on what we saw. 😊
That's called a cowboy shack that is what that little shack is called and yes they still run cattle up there and all the way up too where you head down into the Verde Valley.
This was a good one Glen. Those round structures were amazing. I love the reddish/brown hue of the stones.
Thank you so much! 😊
Well done. Thank you.
Our pleasure! Thank you too! 😊
Wonderful content & fun to watch video nice sharing.
Thank you so very much! 🤗
Watched your video and I had to visit! My friend and I got lucky enough to see deer trekking the side of the canyon!
Oh, that's so awesome! Glad we inspired! And I don't want to say I'm jealous about your deer encounter but... yeah, jealous. That must have been a really cool moment. 😊
Woah, I have driven past there sooo many times
Us too! It's truly interesting to think, while driving past, of all the history and remains of human activity that occurred back there throughout time.
Great video. I’m so glad there were no snakes. We always enjoy what you and Amy deliver.
Thanks so much! We were glad for another snake free adventure too. 😅
I really enjoy watching your videos. Good job!!
Thank you! 😄👍
😎 Thanx!! 🤠💜💥 👋
You are so welcome! 😊
Great video! It was great running into you out there! Cool to see my car in the vid for proof when I get to bragging! It doesn't look like it was pointed out by anyone below but the pueblo is actually a bit south of where the trail loop meets up. I think you found what may be a fort or lookout. I haven't run across that before even though I have been to Richinbar four times! On the map you show around the 4:25 mark the peublo is a little right of center at the bottom. Google maps/earth usually has it labeled as Ruins Tank. It is an off the trail hike but not too rough really. You can also see a diagonal line near it which may be one of the native running tracks. It might be worth a second visit!
Well, shoot! I guess a second visit might be in order in the future! It was great meeting you as well! Happy exploring! 😄
I was so impressed with this video! I really enjoyed this. I’ve passed this area so often and never got off the I-17 to explore there.
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed it! 😄👍
The nail with the kind of square head was a horse shoe nail
I’ve driven by that spot and never even noticed the windmill. Nice research Glenn and close to home.
Thank you so much! It was a nice close adventure for sure. Shocking how much is hidden back there! 👍
A true trifecta indeed! What a beautiful hike-those canyon views were really enjoyable. Great petroglyphs too! Thanks for another fun and informative jaunt!
Our pleasure! It really was a fun outing to find all that within one location. 😄
Fascinating video
Thank you! 😊
Wow! What an interesting find just right off the freeway ! I’m shocked those big mine pits aren’t more well protected! Beautiful views of the canyon and those gorgeous Saguaros !!
I know, those views are amazing, right? There's so many areas like that back in the area. Truly beautiful place. 😊
Really cool. I've seen that windmill while driving up the 17 but had no idea there was any sort of trail near it. Could you have driven that trail if you wanted?
Hmm. I won't say it's impossible but when we were there, the gate was locked and Glenn ended up climbing over. 🤷♀️
I just found you channel and I subscribed right away after I watched few videos..
Awesome! Thanks so much and welcome to our channel! 😄👍
I’m glad the helicopter wasn’t coming for you, Glenn. That’s a really interesting trail with all the ruins and petroglyphs. I especially loved the big cacti.
There are so many fat cacti out in that area lately. They've definitely been taking advantage of the recent rain systems that have been coming through. It's quite a sight. 😊
Hello Sir,
My name is Mike and I just started watching your video’s, the first one was about Badger Springs, I’m now watching the video about Richinbar, I just wanted to say your videos about all the ‘Agua Fria’ area was well done.
The old windmill and corrals used be part of the old ‘Cross Y Ranch’ , I was part of the last cattle round up on Black Mesa before the ranch was sold and all that lease land was returned back to the state before it became a National park that it now. If you want I tell you a few places of interest in that area , I also work at the Cross Y , Canyon Creek (aka dude ranch) plus the Bumble Bee Ranch.
I thoroughly enjoyed your videos.
P.S. all the ‘Hohokam’ ball courts you have found are man made water catchments for cattle…lol
Look forward to watching the rest of your videos.
Water catchment. Whoops! 😅 Interesting how they're of similar shape, though. Love the history of the area you provided. We always appreciate info and background that we lack. Thank you! 😄
Thats a spectactular view isnt it? Its one of my favorite places to fly my drones because of that spectactilar veiw. Its often windy there though due to the updrafts coming out of the canyon.
Believe it or not there is another set of petroglyphs in that area that are literally right off the freeway. Everyone drives right by them all the time and never know they are there.
It's an awesome place to fly. Lots of things hidden and tucked away amidst the beautiful scenery. ☺️
In those days, everything was canned to preserve food! They had no expiration dates ,I have opened canned food that were 10 years old,no problem I ate whatever was in there
Great video! I drove right by there every day on my way home from work for years and had no idea. I saw vehicles parked there and saw people walking down the trail but I always figured they were hunters. Thank you for showing such a hidden gem.
We didn't know for years either! It's all just tucked away back there! 😄
New here. That round structure looks like the drain off for what would have been a large wooden tank. They would leach the ore in the tank and when the process was done they'd drain the sands out the bottom. Fill up, repeat. I'm going to check the stats on this mine and see what they were mining. It looks like tungsten. Back in the '30's and 40's it was illegal to own gold let alone mine it. I do know the Spanish did some mining up there back in the 1700's but that was for placer gold. I.E. in the river. The cabin was called a line shack where a cowboy would stay while mending the fence or simply looking after the cattle. Retired miner and assayer of precious metals.
Oh, awesome! Thank you so much for the info. It really help to add in the details of what we saw. 😄👍
Richinbar had a 20 stamp mill, it must have been booming at one time.
It definitely sounds like it! 👍
Hello, I like your videos! Have you ever visit Bluff in Utah? Very nice town, beautiful landscape. There is a historic Fort in town and a old Cemetery. And close by you can visit the Goosenecks State Park with a fantastic view to 3 loops River. This Area could be somthing for you. I was impressed!
We've been through the area before but it has been a while at this point. We certainly have plans to return and hit up more locations in Southern Utah and will definitely try to fit those locations in. Thanks for the recommendation! 😄👍
@@CactusAtlas and don't forget the Sand Island Petroglyphs near Bluff ;-)
Actually thats an old cow camp. The windmill is to pump water for livestock. One or two cowboys would live there while working that piece of country
That one building that just sort of dead ended into the hill may have been a vault to store explosives
Entirely possible! They would have had to be stored somewhere and things certainly aren't looking the way they were then. So probably not something easily solvable but theorizing and thinking about what once was sure is fun. 😊👍
Remains of a cattle scale
Ah! Was wondering if it could be that as well. 👍
Been loving your channel. Wife and I just moved to Tucson. I’ve been a little confused in some of your videos where you have drone footage. I have been under the impression you can’t fly drones in national monuments/parks. Have you been able to get permits? Would love to know the process for that as I do a lot of commercial drone work.
Hey, sorry it took so long to get back to you. My wife who usually manages comments saved this one for me. I am planning on releasing an upcoming video documenting my experience obtaining my Part 107 license, which has a lessons learned section. 😉. I discuss what you are asking about. Keep an eye out for it, as we should be releasing it in a few weeks.
Weird building is for powder storage
The roundup takes place annually, on horseback.
Nail is a horseshoe mail
My son lived in Mesa and we always took trips and camped on the BLM land
Do you know if it would be ok to ride a mountain bike on that trail? .
Oh, not sure, unfortunately. 😟
I recently moved to AZ. Thank you for showing me a place to visit. Do you know if camping is allowed on that BLM land?
Unfortunately I really don't know the answer to that one. I wish I did. Sorry about that.
Yes you can camp on BLM land for up to 14 days in one spot. Then you need to relocate at least 25 miles.
The medical copters fly up and down I-17 all day.
