- ▶ Taiwanese lawmakers shoved, tackled and hit each other in parliament May 17 in a bitter dispute about reforms to the chamber, just days before President-elect Lai Ching-te takes office without a legislative majority.
👉 In chaotic scenes, lawmakers surged around the speaker's seat, some leaping over tables and pulling colleagues to the floor. Though calm soon returned, there were more scuffles in the afternoon.
Main opposition party the Kuomintang (KMT) has more seats than the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), but not enough to form a majority on its own and has been working with the small Taiwan People's Party (TPP) to push through its own proposals.
The opposition wants to give parliament greater scrutiny powers over the government, including a controversial proposal to criminalize officials who are deemed to make false statements in parliament.
The DPP says the KMT and TPP are improperly trying to force through the proposals without the customary consultation process in what they call "an unconstitutional abuse of power." (REUTERS)

The upheaval started when the bills were not discussed properly in the Legislative Yuan. Only the pro-China parties, Kuomintang (KMT) and Taiwan People's Party (TPP), legislators knew the details of the bills which led to this violent day on May 17th, 2024 (Taipei Time).
Citizens of Taiwan would not stand by while watching the bills that would erode democracy in Taiwan being passed. People have gathered on the streets behind the Legislative Yuan rooting for the legislators trying to defend our democracy since last night.
Thank you for explaining. I hope the situation is resolved in the best way for the strength and future of Taiwan.
What do u mean by “the bill would erode democracy in Taiwan”, can u give any evidence to backup ur claim?… as long as the bill is not introduced by dpp, it’s considered anti democracy. Am I right?🙄
He meant the bills that would erode the unchecked corruption of the ruling party Dpp. As usual, when Dpp cannot win on the ballot, it resorts to fists.
I thought The Chinese Civil War is all about CCP vs KMT 😂
It mean they really care about their country
Clearly u don’t know a thing about Taiwan politics
Yes, it's our responsibility
You don’t know Taiwan 😂
So it was KMT who started the whole thing, black boxed the legislative process, broke the legislative norms, and proposed laws that were against the constitution and tried to force them through.
The process did not respect the DPP legislators' right to scrutinize and participate in the bill.
Not only did KMT trample on the public opinion represented by the DPP legislators, KMT also tried to spread rumors and put the blame on the DPP.
Thank you. I hope the DPP prevails. Best wishes from the USA!
@@HelHathNoFury1111 Thank you.
what are u smoking 😂😂😂 the only “negotiation” the dpp did in the committee meetings were trying to cancel the meeting or delay it…
@@rayq6734 Oh! In other words, do you think that a black box bill with unreasonable procedures needs to be passed, but our elected members don’t do anything? Then I can only wish you well! I hope you still have the power to change your country!
@@ZYH when dpp were in majority in last eight years, never in once did they “negotiated” or compromise with the other parties. I’d call this karma..😂😂😂
DPP got only 40% of votes and seats. Why do the opposition KMT and TPP had to start the fight?
Because KMP and TPP want to unconstitutionally expand their powers, allow China to illegally enter, and affect Taiwan's political subjectivity. Simply put, KMP and TPP harm the interests of the majority of the country for the benefit of their own parties.
@@ZYH Let’s see how the DPP has been standing up to China.
Google “wikileaks Taiwan” to know DPP’s politicians have been using anti-China and independence (which US does not allow) as tools for election purposes (Taiwan’s Netanyahu?).
And how many DPP politicians were found to carry on trade in China secretly to make money when they use “anti-China” for eleciton purposes? Pure hypocrisy!
DPP’s former president Tsai (the woman who shamelessly claims TW is the role model of the democratic world) gave away TSMC’s technology to other countries (TW’s semi-con industries and TSMC were founded by the then autocratic KMT back in 1990’) , and declined to buy BNT vacs in order to undermine the lives of the capitol and the adjacent city which did not vote favorably for DPP. All this farce ended when she yielded to the pressure from top executive of TSMC, Foxconn and Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation (a.k.a. lots of votes. Buddhism is a major religion is East Asia. BTW, Tzu Chi Charity Foundation has provided help in 133 countries, with 65 branches in US alone and branches in 100 countries now. Just Google it).
When Taiwan was surrounded by China jet fighters in 2022 right after Pelosi visits TW, DPP’s then president Tsai still showed up in a cuisine exposition and said nothing about it. China's test missiles flew through TW's atmosphere, and the central government did not issue air defense warning. TW ppl ended up knowing the incident from Japan news. DPP gave a lame excuse of "the atmosphere over Taiwan that China's test missiles flying through does not belong to TW airspace". Purely chihuahuas.
Who said you don;t have Magats in Taiwan?
What in the world is this 😂
Wild
Let the world see Taiwan!
Yo..what the hell is going on here..🤦🧑⚖️✨ probably this is what happens when men trust in men and not in the Creator in maker of all living things, his only begotten son his wisdom, and our most blessed Mary etc..

Hahaha~ So this year, the KMP members of the Legislative Yuan will not allow the DPP members to select cases, review, and speak, which is karma. Then it is karma for people to take to the streets, too! The DPP's strength in the past eight years has not prevented the KMP's proposals, review and speech, nor has it violated the Constitution of the Republic of China, which the KMP loves most.
