I've been to the US Vietnam war memorial. How many Americans died in that war? 55,000? TOO DAMN MANY! But wait, not many Americans know ( or care) how many VIETNAMESE died in that war. In 1995, Vietnam released its estimate on how many Vietnamese PEOPLE died in the conflict. As many as 2 MILLION Vietnamese CIVILIANS of both sides died, and over 1,100,000 NVA / VC perished. The US government estimates between 200,000- 250, 000 South Vietnamese military personnel died. Good God! DAMN! That is a LOT of human beings! The US government said, "we were over there fighting for our freedom." WTF!? It was a civil war. If the US had not become involved, and drug it out, the war would have lasted weeks, maybe. The Vietnamese (both sides) had the right to self-determination. Natural selection. The people of North AND South Vietnam were fighting for self-determination. Both should be respected and honoured. @@albaviator In my country, the pilots had to wear the pressure suit during a flight, due to safety reasons, as it protects the pilot to a certain degree, in case he has to eject. Perhaps VPAF had a different regulation.
@@IGLArocknroll Don`t know were you are from, but i suspect by your name you are from Hungary maybe...In HUAf like in other eastern block air forces that used MiG fighters they flew maybe once a month in high altitude above 10.000 m, so the high pressure suit was used not ofeten. You also have many videos of hungarian MiG-21 and 23, you can see the pilots flying with normal g-suit and flying costume
@@albaviator You guessed it right, I'm from Hungary. Strange. Two former pilots told me unanimously, that the pressure suit was worn during every flight. Perhaps they have fading memories, or I misunderstood something. One thing is for sure: in Hungarian service, the main role of the "Shiny" (as the Hungarian pilots and ground crew called the MiG-21 fighters) was high altitude interception (as the ground attack role was covered by MiG-15, MiG-17 and later, Su-22 fighters). Anyways, great video, thanks for the upload!
Vietnam used Mig-21 in 3 region of altitude: High altitude (above 10000m), Mid altitude (2000-10000m) and Low altitude (below 2000m) during the Vietnam war. Only the high altitude flight use pressure suit.
Still didn't answer my question. If a US pilot was close enough to see the large red numbers on the front side of the Migs they just shot down (without exploding) did any ever inquire about the pilot if he ejected?

Did US pilots ever do any kind of "follow up" or curiosity of a plane they shot at or down what happened to the pilot? Since they all had such large numerals on the sides. Perhaps we would know if there ever was such an ace as "Col Tomb."
Im Vietnamese and i can confirm that "Col Tomb" maybe was just a fiction pilot. I've read many sources of both sides and the best ace pilot in Vietnam war just got 9 kills (3 F-4, 3 F-105, 1 F-102, 2 UAV) while "Col Tomb" got 13 or 14. The only mig-21 that have 14 stars(14kills) is the one named "4324" but it was flown by many pilots. Maybe "Col Tomb" was a rumor of our side to influence the opponent's psychology or maybe it was rumored by the American pilots themselves.
the us did care about the migs but the main threats to them were the SA-2 sam systems because most of the fighters and bombers of usaf were shot down by sam, especially the B-52( only 1 b-52 was confirmed shot down by the mig-21). They did get the sa2 systems after Israel won the 6-day war and obtained them from Egypt and they did counter us by many electronic countermeasures and we had to upgrade the radar over and over to win against them. We built so many decoy to avoid the bombing and anti-radar missile too( That's why the US says we have launched more missiles than we have announced)
You need to grow the brain. Col Tomb was a fake story created by Randall " The Crook" Cunningham to make his name shines. That crook later went to jail trying to scam people, google his name.
There are three major problems with the myth of Col Toon. First of all, Toon/Tomb is not a Vietnamese name. Secondly, he would have been flying two different types of aircraft. The markings on the MiG-21 which showed 13 victory stars and the MiG-17 he allegedly flew against Cunningham and Driscoll. It is also highly unlikely that so well-credentialed a pilot, with so many kills would not have received a considerable amount of press attention. The propaganda advantages were simply too big to ignore. In short, like so many other things in Vietnam, this was the Americans tilting at windmills again.

The US Army made him a door gunner in a helicopter. I became an anti-war peace protestor. Haha! So I did participate in history- sorta.
This video is really cool. I think it's important to see " the other side's " story. Otherwise, all we have left is what the US government tells us. ( Can you say P-R-O-P-A-G-A-N-D-A ?) I've been to the US Vietnam war memorial.
This video shows heroic pilots, patriots. I can see parallels to the American Revolution. War is such a horrible, horrible waste of human lives.
I don't know whether I'm right or wrong but the MiG-21 looks badass!!!!
@@davegeisler7802 one thing is sure that MiG-21s weren't built for rate fights & long engagements. They are like rockets so it's best to use them for hit & run tactics.

Cool video. But let me make a correction. These are MiG-21bis Izdeliye 75AP airframes. You can recognise them by the larger spine tank, larger intake, RSBN antenna beneath the intake. They had a different engine as well, but it is not visible outside.
Great info thank you
different missiles too, MF only carried K-13A, bis has access to K-13Ms
This movie is made in 90s and most of air footage are real. In that time all older Mig-21 (1st gen like Mig-21P and Mig-21F) were decommissioned. They use Mig-21PFM and Mig-21bis instead. Although Vietnam airforce don't have that variants during Vietnam war.
Thank you for uploading. ✌
I'm surprised they didn't leave the canopies open when it wasn't raining. I can't imagine how hot the cockpits were getting in like this!
The direct sun can destroy electronic equipments inside cockpit. They even used thick blanket to cover cockpit when on the field.

Does anybody have another clip of the movie where there was dialogue between the pilots?
Are MiG-21 Bis, they arrive AFTER 1975, the bort number in the "5200" serial is aclear proof of it.
I’m very proud of my country.
Its wasn't just the American that lost the war. its was the whole Ally . if i am not wrong it was a lot of countries that have the Vietnamese blood on their hands. United States, South Korea, Thailand, Philippines, New Zealand and Australia.
I think that this is just a movie, not some real footage. They are not wearing the high-altitude pressure suit, which is mandatory.
This are images from movie yes. You could fly MiGs with high altitude pressure suit or without it, depending on the profile of the mission.
If you are refering to G-suit, then it was mandatory as you say, it was used in every flight.
Good to see the classic fighter plane
Such a beautiful place
This is not Vietnam war era Mig's,this is later version,BIS ,PF or MF
Still didn't answer my question. If a US pilot was close enough to see the large red numbers on the front side of the Migs they just shot down
(without exploding) did any ever inquire about the pilot if he ejected?

The MiG 21 BIS was not operational during the war, but that much artistic license is understandable. NVAF/VPAF pilots knew their MiGs, and their tactics were constantly innovative. Hats off to them for flying against all odds, against the largest and best equipped air forces in the world, and still scoring kills! 🫡

Questionably slavic looking vietnamese
Nope they are real Vietnamese
@@daftcow706 Ohh damn, you just exposed the Soviet conspiracy to act in a 1997 Vietnamese feature film!
What movie is this?
