  • I ate pasta every day and lost 50lbs - when you do the math over my entire journey so far, it's closer to 70lbs (which is crazy to me!). This was made possible by my Patrons / jayswanson who got a sneak peek of this video before anyone else.
Grab a copy of my guide to Paris at parisinmypocke... and then find me on the internet in all of the usual spots:

My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much.

    FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? Over five years now, holy cow.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGear...
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
Do you speak French? - Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
Do you make money off RUclips? - Ha, sorta. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $5/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jays...
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. So instead people often drop off or ship things to the Peloton Cafe in Paris for me.
    Thanks for watching!

So, my mom did the same thing to me. In college she came to my apt and I had just gotten out of the shower and she ripped my towel off of me and started laughing. My stepmother too would laugh behind my back at my weight gain and compare me to my dad's weight gain.

I'm currently learning French and planning a trip to France/ Europe. I love the US, but feel as though I need a change.. I've been contemplating on what it would be like to live in France or Italy. Your videos are very informative and I'm thankful that you share them with us!
I am too, on a weight loss journey myself, and I was wondering what you meant by eating half the calories you burn during exercise? I don't get it 🙃 Does that mean that you can only eat half of the total amount you burn? It sounds like alot of exercise and I don't know if I read that wrong 😕 😅

Changing your body is such a win. I just lost 75 pounds since the pandemic began using intermittent fasting. I also worked out with weights and exercise bands. You look great. The pasta may be causing hunger, and I was wondering if you are getting enough protein and salad. I used Dr. Berg's plan. I was a fat kid from 13 and realized the insulin spikes were the reason. Walking is great and I do at least 10.000 steps. Glad you can run. keep going! by the way, I am going to be 72 in 2 weeks.

Congrats on the weight loss and thanks for telling your story. You hit just about every true point regarding fitness vs weight loss. Losing weight is easy, but getting fit is hard. Also glad to hear you didn't let excuses that stop most people get to you.
As for that trunk region, that will come off. It takes time. It's fat, and like all other fat, it will come off with a calorie deficit. I tend to store in my trunk region as well, and was stuck at 175-180 for a long time. I noticed the biggest difference when I got down to 159 and still need about 5 more lbs to go. That's at 6'0 for context. Point is, don't get discouraged if you want it to come off. You're doing great.

Thanks for making such a great video to help us all keep motivated. Ups and downs occur in life. Life is very stressful and unfortunately for a lot of us, food is a comfort that we have all come to rely on. The standard American diet has been the down fall of so many due to the portion size, the preservatives and overall lack of nutrition it really is in it. Plus adding less activity and more sedentary livelihood lifestyles definitely have not helped. Keep up the journey you are on. And keep making great video 😁

Way to go, Jay! What you are talking about is really self-love and self appreciation and believing that you deserve better. I am also on the well-being journey, but I am gaining muscle. I've always been a skinny girl and people do not even think that this could be an insecurity. I was called "stick", people told me to eat more, tired to measure my waist with their hands. I've always loved sports and being active, I just didn't have the knowledge about nutrition that I have now and that helped me to get in the shape I wanted.
An year ago I was in a pretty bad mental state and I needed something new. I started boxing, and oh my God! This is one of the things that I never knew I needed in my life! I gained muscle, agility, endurance, but most of all - confidence in myself. I found myself again! I am training 3-4 times a week now, playing sparring with partners, jumping rope like a badass and embracing myself and the positive changes that happened not only to my body, but to my mindset and overall presence.
Thank you for sharing your story with the world! Its inspiring! Continue doing this for you, because you deserve it. Your body is the only thing that you have for life.

I also use MyFitnessPal, on and off for many years and still on the journey. I did try Noom for a while but now back with MyFitnessPal. My knees don’t allow me to run but I am trying to increase my walking, and in summer, I can swim in the pool. I did buy a short legged wetsuit thinking I could swim during the winter, but I couldn’t fit into it 😩🙈 so if swimming in winter, I’m lucky to have some thermal baths near me (Fortuna, Spain) so I can go there if I want to swim.

We all have body image issues. When we are young we are very self conscious. I think its part of our brain development. In the US I think there is also a culture of body consciousness which is damaging to so many. You are gorgeous and from what I have seen on You Tube over they years, have always been. But, if you feel good and healthy right now, then that is great. The first step in loving yourself is in your mind!!!. It is hard to get there because in life you have so many challenges and the way to get through them is by respecting your self first. Let go of all the small things that you think made you feel bad, they are in the past and the only thing you can control is today.

It was a revelation… as it was too for my mom, a nurse practitioner, who watched it last week. Which is to say, many MD’s/NP’s are not actually well versed in the physiological implications of sugar.

I want to say ‘well done’, ‘you look amazing’, ‘you’ve worked so hard’, but that sounds condescending to my ears, because you were doing well, you’ve always looked amazing, you have always worked hard, it’s just that now, you’re making yourself the priority, you’re making your health and well-being the priority, and this is the lesson we all need to learn - to stop worrying about what others think of us, and figure out what we think of ourselves. I look in the mirror, and the reflection is not always pleasing, the grey hairs, the wrinkles around my eyes, the plentiful extra kilos that have crept on over the years…but then I remember that the grey hairs are because I am lucky enough to grow older, unlike my brother who died when he was 19; and the wrinkles around my eyes are because of all the laughter I have had in my life; the extra kilos are from carrying my babies, and from the meals with friends and the glasses of wine, the celebrations of life and living. But, I know that I have to take better care of myself, lose weight, exercise more, get my health in check; so that I can find more grey hairs and wrinkles and laugh with family and friends for many years to come❤️ Oh, and Jay? The right woman will want to rub her hands all over your chest regardless of what you weigh. My husband loves every one of my curves.

Some of us store fat around our waist and it will never go away unless you have surgery or are literally starving to death. For example, when I was a bike racer at my peak of extremely intensive training, I weighed 132 lbs at 5’10”. I had no subcutaneous fat anywhere else, but I still had a small tire of fat around my waist! You’re quite svelte at 175. Forget about a bit of fat around your waist.

Thanks for sharing Jay! I have felt overweight my whole life, even as a teen when I very much wasn’t. Have had quite the health and illness journey as an adult, and this year I lost a significant amount of weight, something I began to doubt would ever happen. I’m hoping to lose double that again in the next year or two, mostly just for the fact that I feel better and can walk/hike more when I’m not carrying the weight around, plus it’ll include plenty of work on my gut and liver etc while I’m at it 😄 Cheers to your success and new mindset!

Your story mirrors mine very closely, particularly the childhood body humiliation (mine was at the hands of a church youth group). The damage to my self worth from that has stayed with me for years but I won't let it define me. I'm currently down 3.5kg in 4 weeks and have a way to go but I feel like I've found a better more consistent way to do it. Consistency is the key. IPAs are now my reward treat but I still love them. Cheers 🍻

In any case, good work so far. We’re in Southern Texas. Dream of going to Paris even when I know that’s not likely to happen. So I live it through you and other bloggers. Good luck!

What a journey. I was really happy to hear you say that you were doing it for you. I can relate to the story you told. Ideas and thoughts settling in your head. Those are so hard to get rid of. I struggled with negative self-image for years. Only in my late forties did that change. By the way, to me you always have come across as an well dressed attractive looking man.

This video strikes hard at home. I do think a lot of people struggle with self image. I’m not exactly a good looking guy, but when I was younger I thought I was so out of shape. Looking back at pictures of me, I now realize how ridiculous that was. I’ve never really placed the blame on them before, but looking back now, things my parents would say to me did have a huge negative impact on me. I was in fairly great shape until I was about 20. I remember when I was 20 to 22, I gained 100 pounds. It was nuts. I went from 210 to 310. I’m 6’ 2”, so decently tall. When I was 23-25 I really started to focus on weight lose and got down to about 240. Then I got married, and I don’t blame my wife at all, but my priorities shifted and I gained it all back and some more. 6 months ago, at age 35 I weighed myself at 325 pounds. The most I’ve ever weighed. My wife has also gained weight and we both decided then we had to do something about it. Since then we’ve been careful with what we eat and we’ve started to be more active. She’s lost 30 pounds and I’ve lost 25. Today I weigh 301. I’m hoping to be under 300 by Monday. First time in almost 10 years.

Consistency is key to long term fitness. I just do a little bit a day of something that I really like--walking, calisthenics. It also helps to eat a pretty consistent diet. I am kind of a freaky-eater so I can eat the same things for many meals...which means calorie count remains uniform.

I have been that chubby kid my entire life.. when I was 20 I swore I would lose the weight, and then I was 30, and still not trim, and 40 and 50 and 60.. yup.. but unfortunately when I hit 60 I also had a big ole heart attack.. I won't blame it on the KETO diet, but eating high fat didn't seem to do well for my ticker.. i lost weight and clogged 3 of my arteries, so 3 stents later and a 50LB weight loss I am feeling better, with a weaker heart unfortunately that doesn't pump perfectly, I find food to be fuel.. I don't really care as long as it's not horrible tasting.. very little sodium.. (btw if you limit sodium, you limit most foods, especially eating out or anything processed) I joke that I am on the oatmeal, rice, salmon and broccoli diet.. but that's the truth. then a couple times a year I go on vacation.. and while I don't go crazy, I don't look to much at the sodium content for a week or two.. then back to the norm when I am home. I even changed my job so I don't need to travel anymore, it's so hard to be healthy and eat out all the time. exercise is important, but not crazy.. I don't do anything that would damage me.. no running.. lot's of walking and biking. so now at 61, I have the potential to finally hit my goals at 70 :) I also realize that while my stomach is not perfectly flat, my body is healthier. it is hard to get rid of that last bit, so I just learned to live with it.. that extra skin that won't go away without surgery.. lol.. and I won't do surgery

Having done weight loss since the late 1980’s, the exercise ‘supported’ me in the weight loss. So if had a ‘bad day’ and over ate, I didn’t just ‘jack it in’ and give up, just did a bit more exercise to cancel it out. The hard bit is keeping it off, once you’ve achieved your goal -it’s easy to slack off and the weight creeps back on. But 3 meals a day, eat healthier options (eg rice instead of potatoes and limit bread and cake intake), try to cook fresh and tasty Mediterranean or Chinese meals, but the struggle is real. Good luck to everyone! 😃 👍

It’s impressive how much weight you have lost and we think this is a very hard thing to do, suggestion: considering France has good healthcare and therefore good doctors, ask to get your testosterone level checked sometime and we say “ maybe” your testosterone levels were always low ,nowadays you can take pills that will elevate that level and you will feel stronger , gain muscle easier and yes loose love handles and have a slimmer body, the downside ( if you are single) is your libido will increase and with that some men will feel like randy teenagers again, so watch out.

Going back to the USA means going back to 'not natural' food. The reason for it are the EU food standards. Most of the American youtubers coming to Europe make the observation they lose weight by walking and cycling and eating normally.
