      No, but I used to watch the old Lone Ranger TV shows back in the 50's and I found out later it was filmed in Alabama Hills, along with other movies and TV shows.

    You don't necessarily need to put it in 4 high once you get on dirt roads. But if they have soft sand or mud, put it in before you hit those spots, and before going up the steep hills where you might spin. Also turn off traction control, or you pickup will think you are out of control when you do hit mud, and get you stuck by applying the brakes in the middle of a soft spot.

      Agree with Rusty

  • @tiesadunlop3931
    @tiesadunlop3931 2 года назад +1

    Yup. 4x4 as soon as you hit the dirt. It's not a tool to get you unstuck; it's a tool to keep you from getting stuck. Have fun out there!

    Part of what makes 395 so amazing is all the roads into the sierras. Tioga Pass, June Lake, Rock Creek, Mammoth Lakes. The further north the better.

    I’m glad you finally made it to The Alabama Hills, they really have closed off a lot of areas to overnight camping which is really sad, but it really was over used and abused during The Pandemic and it was a huge concern for the locals and increased threats of fire. There are some areas on Movie Road that you could park your trailer but it is an area that is best scouted out before making a bad turn and taking your trailer on a 2 hour 15. Magnitude earthquake, don’t ask me how we know! The trailer did well and only 1 jar of homemade pickles broke as things flew out of the fridge and cupboards. Needless to say we won’t do that again but it really is a unique beautiful place to see and I am glad you got to see our beloved Eastern Sierra Mountains, they get even prettier as you travel North on Highway 395. Thank you for sharing, safe travels and happy camping. ~Shary~

    Aaron, There should be NO grease on the Andersen hitch ball or in the coupler socket, it's in the manual. To unhitch, after you're in the parking spot, chock the trailer firmly then move your truck forward slightly maybe a 1/4 inch to relieve the from the back of the coupler.

    • @IreneIronTravels
      @IreneIronTravels  2 года назад

      Thank you! Yes, we read the no grease in the manual as well. It's been working much better since cleaning out the old grease the transporters used while towing it to the dealer.

    Be sure and hit Schatt’s in Bishop if you love bakeries. It’s an icon. The only thing that can ruin a place more than the public is when the government “fixes” the problem. I think there’s better ways to regulate a place than to simply close it off, especially when it’s literally our public land.

    I have traveled 395 many times in the last 30 years between Nevada and the Los Angeles. The wind can be wicked. One trip our car got sand blasted, had to replace the windshield in the car. Another time I stopped in Mojave for gas, couldn’t get the car door open due to the wind.

    Had I known that you would be in that area I would have recommended that you visit the Bristlecone Pine Forest. It is just northeast of Big Pine and it is stunning! Bristlecone pines are some of the oldest trees in the world, some are as old as 4000 years. We drive up 395 every year on our way to Silver Lake which is north of Mammoth.

Bodie, Bishop, internment camp from WWII Really enjoying your travel blog and the background music fits in well. Great editing.

    On the hitch grease....... dry lube or very thin layer..... the dust, dirt and sand will adhere to the grease and make a gummy grimy paste that acts like super glue on your moving parts... Very hard to clean out...... Brake cleaner, starting fluid will spray up inside. Stay safe guys. We are really enjoying you getting the hang of pulling the TT..... It's a process but oh so worth the effort

    Just watching your video... I'm from Ridgecrest and that is my back yard....I wish I could have taken you guys for a tour around...Ridgecrest has a lot going for it... with the US Navy Weapons Test station there and the jets flying around, maybe you saw them.... and then also the animal shelter there you could have gotten maybe a puppy or a beautiful rescue dog... don't rule out rescues... stay away in the summer with temperatures averaging in the 110 range....but if you go up in the mountains from 395, Kennedy Meadows is a great place to stay in the summer, it's better views than you saw down of 395...keep putting out the great content...

    Just remember that if you get stuck in 4 wd, you are seriously stuck. Never unhitch if you get stuck as it will make getting the trailer out close to impossible.
    I normally go into 4wd high if off road as it’s easier on the truck towing on dirt roads. Spreads the power train loads on the whole truck. I try not to NEED the 4wd to get to places as it’s a total drag to get the truck and trailer unstuck when off the road.
    You certainly got the winds ! Stay safe, Bill in Utah

During my time in the north, found the Central Valley (south of Sacramento) and grew very fond of the desert; always surprised me at how cold in can get in the winter months!

    Too bad about Alabama Hills. Textbook "a few ruined it for the many". Going to be mostly day use and reservation on Recreation.Gov after they upgrade the toilets, etc. No more first come first served as in the old days. Very sad indeed.

    In the last 10 years Alabama Hills got overrun with RVs, small campers, etc. It used to be a nice place to camp, but no longer. Way too many people. I'm happy they are shutting off large areas from camping. Campers were camping in places you just wanted to sights see, and you go there and people are camped there and some campers get upset because you want to see the wondrous place but you are intruding on their "campsite". Also, the trash. Even still most weekends during good weather, almost any nice spot to sight see has someone camping in it.
    You should have driven through Tuttle Creek BLM campground. $8/night last I was there. Most sites will hold your RV. More than 1/2 hold my 35' 5th wheel Toy Hauler. You may need to do a bit of manual leveling to get your trailer close (especially on the South side of the Creek). Avoid Memorial Day weekend and opening fishing weekends (there is an early opener in the Southern Sierras).
    Cell Service is decent from Tuttle Creek - line of sight to Lone Pine (Verizon).
    We camp in the desert a lot. I think we had planned on that same weekend (very near Trona), but based on the weather (wind) canceled. I always look at the weather and wind direction/speed predictions, so when I setup I try to face my trailer in the direction of what is going to be the prevailing wind (especially if the wind speed is going to be constant above 20 mph). Less than 20 mph, can kind of use the trailer as a wind block - above 20 mph for a long period I want to face into the wind so I sleep better.

    • @IreneIronTravels
      @IreneIronTravels  2 года назад

      Yes, it was strikingly beautiful out there for sure. We have a hefty trailer hitch lock, a couple wifi cloud security cameras, and some motion alarms. We are also going to add a GPS tracker as well...just because. But for the most part its pretty safe out in the boonies....

    Now that you’ve had the snap pads for a little while. What do you think about them? Do you see a difference from not having them and having them now?

    • @IreneIronTravels
      @IreneIronTravels  2 года назад +1

      It's hard to compare without them, because we added the snap pads the day we got our RV. But, I'll say I did that because we have the auto level system and I think that is where they are most beneficial. Using a plastic foot pad does the same thing, but I think its nice to not have to mess with those as we move about once a week. If we were only using our RV a couple times a year it would not be worth the price, but we do really like having them!

    • @IreneIronTravels

      I totally understand were you are coming from.....but its not much difference from leaving your house for the day or parking your vehicle somewhere.Theft and burglary can happen anywhere. The odds of someone randomly coming out to BLM land and trying to steal an 10,000lb RV would be pretty rare it think. We do of course have an expensive hitch lock, camera system, and soon to be GPS tracking added!
