  • This is the final video in the series, the turntable needs some final tinkering and the cabinet has to be stripped and refinished. It all comes together in the end, I hope all that work has paid off. The sticker I used on the door has a spelling mistake, I was using it as a dummy run but affixed it by mistake, I have replaced it with the correct sticker.

    Superb job as always . I just love that radiogram . Isnt it just the best feeling to bring these things back to life after years of neglect . I always feel it is a trubute to the folks who designed and built these things . They live on through their these items . Every time I switch on one of my old radios it gives me a thrill as I think back to those days that will sadly never return . Almost everything I own is old ... my furniture , car , clocks etc etc . I feel they insulate me from a world that I no longer enjoy , respect or feel part of .
    Well done David . Thomas in UK .

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  3 года назад

      Hi Thomas, It is a great feeling to see this back to working condition and so impressed with it's performance. The designers pulled a rabbit out of the hat for this one. I guess as we move on in life we tend to hold on the things that we remember fondly from the old days, I do it and probably most others do it too. It's good to remember old times and old friends and what an honour it was to have enjoyed them. Cheers Thomas, take care 🙂

    @Erzahler 3 года назад

    David, I like how you go out of your way to preserve, or at least reproduce, all of the original stickers, labels, decals, stamps, etc. Some restorers look only to restore and sell, with no real attempt at full restoration -- merely outbid, shotgun repair and flip, as it were.
    You, on the other hand, try to preserve as much of the original decals, logos, dial plates, as possible. This is very important to people looking to purchase restored antique radios and who are looking for authenticity in said radios.
    I also like the fact that you show pretty much everything you do in a "warts and all" format! Those little things you missed -- such as pinning a wire under a nut or missing a short to a shield -- are the same kinds of "oopsies" all of us have missed now and again.
    So thank you for being an honest tech and for making great videos -- and for being a "goofball!" Please keep them coming, and keep giving these forgotten, venerable radios another lease on life. 🙂👍📻

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  3 года назад

      Hi Captain Skywarn, thank you. I'm very happy you enjoy what I do. Yes, I love to bring them back to new if needed or keep them original if that's what's best for the radio. I include the "oopsies" because that's what it's all about, it's part of the process. Goofball!!! I resemble that remark 😉 Thanks again 👍😀

    Gosh I really enjoyed this "mini-series"! It is a testament to your patience and ingenuity, it really is! It does, however, leave me feeling a little melancholy as well. When I was growing up Astor/EIA were still in operation in Clayton (For international readers this is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria). I visited the factory as a little kid because my cousin was working there. It was huge! You could have parked three jumbo jets in the place! They made everything from whitegoods to tvs and they had a recording studio and record pressing plant there as well. They also made equipment for various defence services around the world. The quality coming out of the Astor factory was world class. Now it is all gone. The factory was levelled years ago to turn into a housing estate. Australia still makes some world class electronics (GME/Kingray comes to mind) but not the mass-market consumer products it once made in abundance. All that skill...all that design brilliance gone forever...a legacy of globalisation. Sure, globalisation has given us cheap products but at a huge cost in terms of loss of employment and the ability to build things from scratch. The Covid crisis has served to show the folly of this in terms of relying on one supply chain and one supplier. Maybe, just maybe things will diversify from now on...who knows. As usual, David, a brilliant video which I thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you!

      I remember Astor made everything from washing machines, fridges to radio and TVs. It all got wiped out within months when the government lifted tariffs in 73, it was sad but inevitable. I was surprised during Covid the products we were able to produce so quickly, maybe all is not lost 🙂

    David... You have to be the most patient and meticulous person I have ever observed in restoration work. I compliment you on this restoration...absolutely fantastic! One observation...Take it for what it is worth. While restoring/finishing wood surfaces, I was severely instructed to never sand across the grain of the wood. This advice came to me in the late 1950's from an excellent shop teacher. We used several coats of wax, with fine steel wool to finish it. I would like to see more on the restoration of a 6 tube SuperHydrodyne Radio including finishing the bakolite case. Thank you for your incredible restorations... BTW, In the US, the government is considering eliminating the AM, analog band in favor of digital. Sure hope not. Thanks again. Ron

      HI Mogul Smoke, thank you. I sure hope I didn't sand across the grain in the video 😯 The only time I might is when I am trying to remove a lot of material but then I finish with the grain. I don't have a 6 tube radios at the moment although I just fixing one for a friend 🙂

    DAVID .... I suspect you're not big on the superfluous comments in life so I offer you my apologies before I comment , SIR I am in awe of you and your skillset and quite literally your care and commitment to yesteryears instruments of joy , purveyors of knowledge and sometimes messengers of war and upheaval .Many of us forget the position of importance in households that radios and radiogrammes had informing the nation of losses or gains in theatres of war where familes had loved ones battling in intolerable conditions as a family gathered around eager for even the slightest of sign that in the fog of war the pendulum had begun to swing the allies way .
    I like to think that so many of the earliest sets survives because HOPE for loved ones and flag and country came to us ... as a unit as we huddled around them , those sets with their unique sound imprinted in our minds .
    Obviously your repair of pre 1945 sets are rare but any valve sets evoke those memories........

      Thank you Mei Chong,. You are absolutely correct about the radio being the centre of media reporting during times of turmoil. I do have a few pre 1940 radios which I did before RUclips but you are right I will see if I can find some for future videos 🙂

The case was sound and most of the parts were there but boy did it stink. I have it next to me at my computer and occasionally slip in a 78 record especially if I have visitors, they are amazed at the slot in record player. Thanks De Mus 👍🙂

    Wow! What a transformation Dave. When you showed a photograph of what the radiogram looked like when you first put it onto your bench, and the level of workmanship you put into its restoration, it is definitely ‘et voila!’ It looks brilliant: it performs brilliant, and it sounds brilliant. It is a monumental credit to you my friend.
    I know that ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’, and the Philco model 46-1201 is a superb looking table-top radiogram: for me personally the Astor KK has a slight edge, looks wise, over the Philco. Having said that, I definitely would not turn my nose up at owning either of the two models.
    When I saw you applying wood stainer onto the cabinet I immediately began thinking you was about to fall into the same trap I’ve fallen into over the years. I thought the stainer you was applying was far too dark but it turned out to be at the right level: it definitely looks good. Normally I might have said the lustre, and smoothness is more befitting, say, a guitar, or a piece of expensive furniture but it works real well for that radiogram. For my taste, and no doubt for countless other people, you have pitched it at the right level.
    I love your sense of humour: it very much creases me up LOL. The reason I love it so much is because it is so dry. It is very similar to that of Uncle Doug, the guitar amplifier restoration engineer.
    Thank you for giving me a mention: it is very much appreciated my friend. Best regards from Phil.

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  3 года назад

      Hi Phil, thank you for your very kind comment, I wouldn't mind the Philco version either. The gloss is more than it should be but it still looks good and when on display doesn't stand out as too glossy, I have to find a replacement clear for the top coats with a little less gloss.
      I like Uncle Doug too, I would have liked him as an instructor through my career which required a lot of classroom time.
      Happy to mention your channel, I enjoy your videos. Thanks Phil, stay safe 🙂
