Very cool build, Love the XJS
With all that room up front you might be able to squeeze in some 76mm turbos and the plumbing.

I had a 1980 Chevy 5.7 L xjs and an 84 v12 xjs in the recent past. Keeping my eye out for another. Still my favorite car.

Fun fact: on my swapped 76 xjc-6, I can change the oil , the starter or engine without jacking up the car and without getting under it and just lean over the fender.
You do have the get under it to install the engine to install the flex plate to torque converter bolt though.
You can change the water pump without removing the radiator as well.
AC compressor sits on one side at the top and the alternator on the other.
No matter what you need to do to it, you only need three wrenches.
Engine weighs nearly the same as the straight six and puts out more power than the v12 jag engine.
The mileage is amazing and no more cracked blocks or blown head gaskets.
The original Jag transmission was the same as the ford mavericks. The straight six and maverick slush box was antiquated junk when it was new.

I admire your tremendous talent and wish I had the same ingenuity abilities! I have questions you may have already answered. The XJS was a well deserved transition from the Series III E-type, a car which had been matched to a 12 cylinder engine but in a body that could not adequately provide the smooth ride that the silky engine was meant to power. The Series III E-Type had been widened, lost the spectacular lines of the fixed head coupe in favor of the shoe-like 2+2 and was due for replacement. The XJS, however, was not meant to replace the Series I & Euro spec Series II models, which were "sports cars", the model was intended as a Grand Touring Car, meant to eat up miles in quiet comfort on the Autobahn. My first question is, what motivated you to convert the model to the European version of a Muscle car? Interest in the muscle car genre? A love of the body? Availability of an affordable, powerful American engine? Etc. Did you ever consider installing something like an Aston Martin 12 cylinder engine to create an Autobahn eater? Unaffordable? Just no interest? Just curious. Kudos on all the great work you've done!

The jag was two houses down, had a price tag of $0, and my buddy had a rusted out GMC Yukon for 800 bucks. So availability is the answer to your question!

Not by a longshot. The _best_ one could do is build the v12 up. Had folks done that back in the day instead of neglecting them, they'd basically be a British LS with 4 extra cylinders. Not in design but in relative simplicity and in the fact that its a relatively small block, can be easily made to make a decent amount of power and its got the bolt pattern of an old Chevy. Also in the fact that its the most abundantly produced automotive V12 ever. It deserves more attention and respect tbh.
And before I get the "time and money" rebuttal. LS builds weren't *always* that cheap. None of them were, nor ever are. Not until the market got/gets built up.
Not here to hate. So don't try that either. There's more than one way to skin a cat so to speak, and I see creative people throwing away chances at doing truly unique things.

Don't swap it. Build the V12 if it can be saved. It's a waste. And I'm not saying that as a "purist" those v12 engines, built, are just things of beauty.

I literally was raised wrenching on E-Type Jaguar's, Austin Healey's, Triumph's and all manner of sundry American vehicles. If you honestly think an XJS is something so profoundly special that he "destroyed," one by essentially saving it, and making it road worthy again, you need your head examined. Personally I am tickled pink that this young man took this project on and is fast approaching the time when he can enjoy driving it!

    • @richardp6178
      @richardp6178 2 года назад +1

@@insolentstickleback3266 Let me put this as simply as possible as that seems to be the limit of your comprehension. Whatever you think of the XJS is irrelevant. Jaguar designed and built the XJS as a refined GT car. Even Enzo Ferrari said that it was a great car and better than his GT car the Ferrari 400 and you CAN'T argue with that. I have driven both and I tend to agree with Enzo! This is the main reason why Jaguar fitted the V12 into the XJS because they wanted the most refined, smooth and quiet car at the time. Now I have just completed a mild restoration on an XJS that has been abandoned for 14 years and when I got the car absolutely nothing on this car showed any sign of life! Fast forward 5 months, 700 man hours and $12000.00 in parts alone and it's now a reliable, good daily driver. Out of that $12000.00 only $1000.00 went into getting the engine running! Much cheaper than any GM conversion!!! Unfortunately Americans are not only lazy but mechanically challenged when it comes to complex engines even though the Jaguar V12 engine itself is a super strong and reliable engine. Also Americans have this misguided belief that the cars and engines that they build are the best in the world bar none and anything foreign is junk. This belief is especially prevalent in the LS fan boy community. By removing the V12 and installing a crass, unsophisticated American boat anchor of an engine YES you are destroying everything that the Jaguar engineers designed into this car. P.S. I am American but I'm intelligent enough to see through the propaganda BS. Also I have spent my life wrenching on exotic cars and corporate jets.

I build hotrods for a living , I will put whatever engine in whatever car . I think keeping them on the road and making them stop and go with traffic is the important part otherwise they don't get driven . The best cars of each kind have already been preserved but in time that won't even matter. the new generations don't care about landlines telephones and their preservation. If your not going to drive it and just keep it hidden away buy a kandinsky or pollack and enjoy it in your living space where you can enjoy it . I have a 59 metropolitan with a 2.0 ford motor , disc brakes from an mg driven alot , my 54 chevy has a sbc 200r4 and disc brakes driven alot . I'm currently getting my 76 jaguar xj12 with a 350 ready to drive bought already swapped .I live in a large crowded city phoenix . Stop and go with traffic and drive the wheels off of them . Where is the thin red line that defines fixing and ruining ; non original air in the tires ?
