  • Teenagers who have grown up in Russia have known only one leader in their lifetimes: Vladimir Putin. In the video Op-Ed above, Daria Navalnaya, host of an influential RUclips channel and daughter of the opposition leader Aleksei A. Navalny, interviews a cross-section of young Russians about how they feel about Mr. Putin, politics and their country’s future. Her interviews reveal a generation frustrated with the status quo, pessimistic about the possibility of change, and torn between their dreams for the future and their deep sense of patriotism.

      I'm surprised that they even put people on who straight-up admitted they want to stay in Russia though. I would say a lot of teenagers in Russia see the problems with their country but they also deeply love it and most do not want to leave. I would've preferred a more neutral interviewer without such emotional reactions though who gave less personal input. I'd rather the media I consume not try to appeal to my pathos. Let the interviewees speak for themselves. But it is true that Russia does have a lot of issues with poverty and corruption. If you deny this fact you're delusional. Most capital in the country is controlled by a minority (the oligarchs) and most funding goes to Moscow and St. Petersburg while the rest of country is left to live in dirt.

      Во время пандемии коронавируса правительство России совершенно не помогло частному бизнесу в своей стране, в результате чего в России сейчас инфляция и рост цен выше, чем в любой стране Мира. В США сейчас инфляция 6%, и там это считается апокалипсисом, а у нас в России инфляция 9%, при этом продуктовая - 20%. Цены на продукты по курсу валют уже выше, чем в Европе и США.
      Что касаемо устройства российской экономики, то фактом является то, что в России коррумпированные полицейские прокуроры облагают частный бизнес незаконными поборами за "крышу", а за неуплату предприятие закрывают. Это лишает частный бизнес части доходов, притом что налоги для бизнеса в России высокие, учитывая развитость российской экономики. Да и закрытие предприятия не есть хорошо. Благодаря открытым границам ситуация ухудшается, потому что предприниматели просто уезжают из России. Закрытие предприятий и незаконные взятки и поборы приводят к падению конкуренции между производителями и излишней монополизации экономики, и как следствие ухудшению качества товаров. К тому же эта ситуация ещё и отпугивает инвесторов от российского рынка, потому что права бизнеса не защищены. Следующей проблемой российской экономики является действительно коррупция, которая унаследовалась от СССР вместе с правящими элитами. Несменяемость власти и отсутствие политической конкуренции привели к деградации советского правительства. А современную российскую политическую систему построили люди, которые были важными шишками ещё при СССР - Ельцин, Чубайс, Гайдар и Геращенко. И современная российская система это тоже однопартийная диктатура без конкуренции. Следующим фактором, который отпугивает инвесторов от российского рынка, является зависимость валюты от нефти и газа, что обусловлено скорее коррупцией в государстве и неэффективном использовании нефтедоходов. Как итог, с 2012 года, не без помощи внешних Мировых экономических тенденций, российская экономика в застое. А застой экономики только всё усугубляет инфляцией, в результате чего центральный банк России в последние годы ведёт политику вывода денег с рынка, что достигается высокими кредитными и ипотечными ставками - в России они составляют 15-20% годовых. Это опять же усугубляет ситуацию с инвестициями. А поскольку российская экономика это несколько частных монополий, которые сотрудничают с государством, либо вовсе государственные монополии, то они просто легко поднимают цены.

    if nationalism and homophobia are the main problems in Russia, this is a great country. As far as I can see, US citizens, whether democrats or republicans are ultra-nationalists. So are british, italians, ukrainians to a pathological degree, etc... Then when a youngster is pushed to claim he wants less power for the president and that he would organize more democracy, will he actually achieve it with less power? Russians have a hard life, and complaints about corruption,healthcare, pensions, everyday difficulties come actually far before foreign policy, which unfortunately is a driving motivation of V. Putin. Some of his justified reforms (pensions) have led to a substantial drop of his popularity... the interviews miss many issues. There are far less screams in favour of wars in Russia than in NATO countries.

    • @lachesarborisov9531
      @lachesarborisov9531 3 года назад

      @Nenad Tomic Yes, as defined by the World Bank. Guess the state has made it so that its citizens can actually earn more than 1-2 euros hourly (which is overall good), but far from making the life of Russians materially alright. Across all regions the minimum wage's 140 (a raise they instituted last year) or thereabouts and in Moscow it's approximately 200, which is an absolute joke considering living prices - fortunately a big chunk of Russians earn above that, but still not hoghly. This in the same country with one of the highest number of billionaires mind you. Shows the economic inequality. From one Eastern European country to the other.

    • @lachesarborisov9531
      @lachesarborisov9531 3 года назад

      @Nenad Tomic Putin's reign has lasted 20 years and in the first decade there's an obvious explanation to his popularity - yes, indeed the economy was looking up, wages were rising fast and inflation became a thing of the past. Corruption has always been something that our Eastern European systems have grappled with and Putin didn't set a better example for himself or his administration. The economy has gone from stagnant to falling after the invasion of Crimea and the ruble has inflated to 1 dollar for 80 ruble, savings, jobs are lost etc. There's also not really a choice for the Russian people, society has turned sharply against Putin in the following years and started looking at him as the politician he is, not a deity or saint to save Russia. Unlike Serbia and Bulgaria (where I'm from, *not much better than Russia, but I didn't state so) there isn't mass emigration, but that's cause visa policies are strict for Russian citizens. Though I myself am not Russian, I had friends of Russian/Moldovan background move to Russia for strictly personal reasons (not economic, if you're Serbian/Bulgarian there's not a real economic incentive to move to Russia) and they've been having difficulties the last few years and job cuts cause the oil industry's been failing them.

But Vladimir Putin does not allow them to do this, for which they hate him and dream of a revolution in Russia and its overthrow. And Daria Navalny and Alexei Navalny only aggravate the situation in order to turn Russians and foreigners against Putin. And here's another fact about Daria. Her father often scolded Russian officials for sending their children to study abroad, and then he sent his daughter to Stanford. I do not believe the official data, I know that every second person in Russia wants to move to Europe, the USA, Japan, even to China, anywhere ... we don’t want to live under a dictatorship, we are tired of the leftist views that have turned our country in the wasteland. 1- why is she speaking to a foreign news channel about the domestic problems of her home country?
    2- Why is NYT interested in this particular geography right now?
    3- all world countries have corruption, including the U.S which has day light treason from most politicians by following foreign lobby groups policies.
    4- let each country determine its own fate however they see fit. It's no one's problems.
    5- this piece is similar to the war ravaged countries that were publicized before with "they have WMD's", "they need democracy", "he is a dictator"....

      @Feuertaufe corruption's tentacles exists in every country in the world. I am not naive. This is a domestic problem. Between the country and its populous. Yes I know what will happen to dissidents; History is filled with such. When enough people revolt for the reasons they see fit, change happens. Yes blood will run in the streets.
      Yes, NYT reports a variety of eclectic topics. Though when foreign politics is among them, especially a country's dissidents and given the track history of American journalism with regards to spreading "democracy ", this smells of foul. The regime change industry.

    A great thinker once said..." happiness is pretty hard to find within oneself.... but it cant be found sonewhere else."
    People dont like their govt because their bored or achieve their wishful thinking. Lol thats normal for kids to be dissatisfied... so few kids are not dissatisfied of their own family... they wznt to go outside and to have fun and funded by your parents, right? But you will get mad because they wint give money to have a good time.
    Dear Kids, same is true when your dissastisfied with govt hut what your asking for to be happy will have great price to pay since you dont know the monster you want to create, suggested by people (who may have an agenda or may not... just as ignorant you. But its has to common similarity to those who have and agenda, crying for the same thing) to to you that govt that the govt can do better. But sadly, but creating a govt working the right way? Takes centuries to accomplish with people who will do right thing! Do you have those people around? Are you sure you want to gamble tranquility for chaos just to have have fun and may your dreams come true!?
    Sorry dear, what you wish for isnt fun.... you really think people go are having fun? The reason they come home because life is for more boring there than where they are. You just feel envious people look so happy in the pictures. Why you think they seem happy? It isnt because they been ask to smile for camera or people just simply pretend deliriously happy on camera?
    Not going hungry or working like a slave? Is the best place you want be.... just be patient and try new things like having group gardening for herbs and spices and a place to hangout every weekend and doing group research on how to be good at it and perhaps build something for livestock.
    Great things comes from very simple things, only fools rush in for their big dreams with bigger monster waiting for you to show up!...
    Anywsy, posting pictures of you and your buddies having a picnic in your herb garden is far more inspiring than those whi are traveling around the world learning nothing. Its an emoty and depressing world where everyone hardly know anybody. You will be stuck in a room and nowhere to go or go out with friends. Is that the life you want dear hmm?
    The only reason why people people are bored? Because most everyone are as dumb as clueless as you. Travelling around world and none has found any happiness... just bewilderment for being in a new place and gets ver old very fast.

    This isn't specific to Russia. Young people everywhere always want to "change" things and feel like they can't. And older people are always more conservative. Also young people don't always understand things are the way they are for a reason. The thing that is specific to Russia is some people in Russia for some reason feel like democracy is some cure all for all there problems. Let me tell you, it isn't.
