- The Royal Ballet celebrates Peter Wright’s 90th birthday with his much-loved production of this beautiful classical ballet, danced to Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score. Find out more: www.roh.org.uk/...
Marius Petipa created the scenario, which is based on a fairytale by E.T.A. Hoffmann, and Lev Ivanov provided the choreography. The Nutcracker was first performed in 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. It initially had a poor reception, but its combination of enchanting choreography and unforgettable music has since made it one of the most loved of all ballets.
In Peter Wright’s classic production for The Royal Ballet, the stage sparkles with theatrical magic - a Christmas tree grows before our eyes, toy soldiers come to life to fight the villainous Mouse King and Clara and the Nutcracker are whisked off to the Kingdom of Sweets on a golden sleigh. Tchaikovsky’s score contains some of ballet’s best-known melodies, from the flurrying Waltz of the Snowflakes to the dream-like Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy - all brilliantly set in Wright’s choreography. Julia Trevelyan Oman’s designs draw upon 19th-century images of Christmas, making this magical production perfect for the festive season.
It is one of my dreams to see The Royal Ballet's The Nutcracker live one day. ❤🎄 It's pure magic.
lisa marie mc same I really want to see it
lisa marie mc same❤❤
lisa marie mc i saw it live in a cinnema in Germany this year from the Royal Opera Ballet production it was beautiful and breathtaking♥♥
I saw it live at the Royal Opera House, managed to get a second row seat. The most special night of my life - I felt so awed by the production. Took me years to save up to see it, but so worth it! True magic.
It's one of my dreams to dance in the ballet
If I ever have a son, I hope he'll agree to take ballet lessons. Nothing wrong with sports, but ballet is an intense sport turned into art and I hope he learns how to push himself to achieve and how to express himself.
I have never heard ballet explained better
When I was a child I dreamt about seeing The Royal Ballet's Nutcracker. Since I live in Italy I saw it at La Scala in Milan but every Christmas I would tell my mum "Oh I wish we could go to London to see it". And I would listen to the music all the time. And then five years ago when I was 30 I eventually did go to London and see The Nutcracker and it was AMAZING, it was really a dream coming true. Every year, when I hear Tchajkovskij's first notes in the ouverture is definitely the moment when I think "Oh, it's Christmas again!".
Bizarre as this will sound, I'm so glad your production is actually using a plain ol' traditional nutcracker. Despite the name of the ballet, in the last few years I've seen productions replace the wooden figure with things like cloth toys or jump--jacks.
I'm snow queen in my small town ballet and these videos make me so excited!!
Nina Lett Congrats! Hope you did well!
Good luck I'm sure you'll be great🖒
That is right. To watch on Christmas Eve is my tradition, drinking hot chocolate with ginger.
'like zayn malik coming to life" yeah girl
I love her bc she loves Zayn Malik
i have some WONDERFUL news for her about zayn malik
@@Mousy677 what!!
@@amberwoolard3400 He's - wait for it - ALREADY REAL *dramatic orchestral music*
i felt that
I have yet to see it live... I will take my gf & daughter next year to see it. I love this ballet/story
I'm playing a flower and an Arabian in my Ballet Studio Nutcracker and I'm so excited for this year because this will be my first time dancing a role on point and dancing these roles in general and seeing them rehearse gets me even more excited
when the company is big enough to have boys play the boy parts😥
Lil Cool 😂😂
Lil Cool 😂👍🏼
oh yeah my dance school's also doing it this year but it's gonna be magical anyway :)

@@natalkabanasova5983 true!!
I took my mom to see it at Birmingham with the Birmingham Royal Ballet on Tuesday. The Waltz of the Snowflakes..... wow 💕
My dance academy always has a guest dancer every year to be the snow king, and any other parts we need an adult male dancer. This year we have a lot more boys, so the mouse king and nutcracker are brothers , and the fighting looks so real, they are not just hitting their swords together, like when I was in a large production with a bunch of different dance schools.
goals😊 I dream that that will one be me😊
2016's Clara was *gorgeous*.
Laura Icahn she's also been the sugar plum fairy I believe the previous year
That is a ridiculously good looking cast for the main couple. I still can't decide if I find Frankie or Alex better looking haha.
The Nutcracker is great! I love it!
I’m the sugar plum fairy in our production and as a 13 year old It’s such an honour!
The Nutcracker is one of my favorite. Hope i can watch them personaly. One of my dream to watch all of their performance. ❤ Royal Opera House is one of the best. ❤
I want to see it so badly since I was a little kid. Just go in the nutcracker on christmas eve... It gives me this feeling of christmas, this warm, cozy feeling of love which I love.
Yes! There are way more POC than I expected.
Kuma yes I love how diverse the royal ballet is too!!!
Kuma and why would that matter? The Royal ballet has nothing to do with it, it's the parents that need to sign up their kids for ballet. Why do people always have to bring up race in everything?
C. Mihaela the reason being is that there are many people such as POC that just don’t see representation in media, even dance, to the point where some studios will turn POC away from preforming and practicing
I doubt any studio would turn a good dancer away just because the colour of their skin. Like I said, it's the parents' job to sign their kid up for ballet. No one is excluding anyone from ballet or any dance classes based on ethnicity.
@@evanescence686 Misty Copeland once got remarked when she was you her that they didn't want black girls because they'll get "fat" and "too curvy". So I don't know about that.
I saw it at the roh, Clara is so pretty and the whole stage is amazing, a wonderful fairy tale well done
I saw it live on the cinema and it was... marvellous! Nutcracker is so magical ❤️🎄❤️
Zara Xael Yes i saw it in the cinnemaxx kiel in Germany the Nutcracker is my all time favourite ballet i saw it three times with differend productions

Francesca Hayward makes a lovely Clara..
she plays the sugar plum fairy in another year
And the Royal Ballet’s ‘Nutcracker’ would not be the same without the superb
Mr Gary Avis.
Lauren Cuthbertson❤️😍
I love roh version, it's my favorite! I get so happy when I see Mayara Magri also ❤️😍
I reeeeaally want to go see this
the editing of the video thou, beautiful♡
Well I want to see it again now...
I'm seeing a performance of the Nutcracker for the first time in about 10 years this Sunday! I'm so excited :)
PupCake1025 so you're seeing it in 10 years time 😂😂.
10 years?! That's a long wait lol =)
In about 10 years?!
im going to see the nutcracker on dec10 and I’m so excited!
All very charming. However, as a former ballet dancer myself, I can vouch that when it’s NOT Christmas time, dancers just about vomit when they hear any chords from any music from Nutcracker. We forbade our company class pianists from playing any of it. We still do.
So true!!!!
Aves Raggiana Hahaha True
I actually love hearing the nutcracker music. I had a bit of a dancers depression for 2 days after the show (A depression only dancers understand when you finish a performance and you almost don't know what to do with yourself) and the only thing that made me feel better was to listen to nutcracker music
I can relate to that slump. I've never really been a dancer but I was active in musical theatre and once a show was over it was just...kind of weird
Music 4 Dance Same
yeah so true
beautiful
Went to see it yesterday, it was amazing
Love this 👍👑💃
Great video editing...
Thanks for sharing!
“Like zayn Malik coming to life” YES FRANKIE
Ask on Dec first any roh dancer how much they love to dance it. Without a camera tho
I know I bet its a slog night after night , however this and other Christmas productions are the bankers of a season , full houses , money in the bank in order to fund new works ect . I am glad they have rested it this season though you can have to much of a good thing !!! Go Coppelia !!1
I HAVE BEEN IN THE NUTCRACKER IN UTAH!!!
I am going to see the nutcrackers
Mayara Magri.....linda!!!!
I love Gary Avis 😂
Because nutcracker is one of the biggest money maker for any dance company, big or small...
This is why God made people in the first place! Cheers!
what is the name of the documentary? that this clip was taken from, i know i've seen the whole thing but i can't find it for the life of me?
I want to be in a nutcracker so bad :((
Dare I compare Balanchine's Nutcracker to the Royal Ballet's? The RB has more people on stage and more beautiful accoutrements. There is a glamour which is lacking in the Balanchine's Nutcracker. His is simple and streamlined. RB takes it to an entirely higher, different level.
What is the name from the song at 2:02
Maye Lehmann Its the Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy
Dance of the Sugarplum.... hance why they had it when sugarplum ferry was interviewed
Where's Yuhui Choe?
I really love the purple leotard that the dancer (I think it's Hikaru Kobayashi?) is wearing at 2:49. Anyone know where it's from?
slk883 looks like it's from bloch, i'm not 100% sure but they definitely have similar ones
this is my second year in the it's nutcracker. I was a party child last year but a gingerbread and ice fairy this year. a bit dissalointed the choreography is so easy and its meant for younger children but I'm so small they put me in there😔
Lil Cool Omg, are you a ballerina? I am so jealous of you. I started dancing at 14 and ballet at 15. Even though I am improving fast and am already on pointe (kind of, can't actually dance/walk on them yet, started three weeks ago) (I am sixteen now (don't worry I had technical training before I started ballet at modern dance. I know one year of ballet would otherwise be way to short for going on pointe)), but being a ballerina is out of reach for me, thanks to my turn out and the fact that I am literally like a decade behind... still trying to become an all round dancer in the future though :)
Could you please tell me what it is like? I love ballet, I cannot believe I used to think that it was boring! I was so so so stupid!
Is doing it so much as amazing (but hard and painful) as it seems? Are you on pointe yet or are you still too young? How are ballerinas able to be on pointe for so long? My toes are red after 15 minutes of simple exercises that are partly on pointe :O. I cannot imagine what would happen after wearing them for a whole day..
What do you love most about dancing? What do you think is better for you actual dancing or working on technique? (I am thinking about looking at more dance classes in a week, but I am not sure whether I should take more ballet or more different dance styles XD)
Oh and btw, congratulations on your part. I am sorry for you that you think it is too easy, but you probably will enjoy it any way right? Dancing is always amazing :)
Oh and sorry that this is so long. I am really over enthusiast XD
AVideoStarWorld Willemijn lol not even close😂😂 I'm not even en pointe yet. when I was 3 I started dance but broke my back at 6 so I took a long break. when I was eleven I started dancing again. thus is my 3rd year doing ballet 2 doing jazz and 1 year doing modern. I'm super behind for my age though as all of the friends my age are en pointe. I'm not in a company or anything I just go to a small studio and go to the IBT for the nutcracker. I feel so behind and will probably get en pointe around 15 but I dont know if ill ever be able to dance professionally because I have a bone disorder.😥😥
Lil Cool Ah that sucks. I am really sorry. I hope you can still be a professional dancer :)
yup so do I!also congrats on poontw
pointw

anyone know when it's going to be preformed this year?
Kitty - MMD and more it was a few weeks ago i saw it live in a cinnema in Germany from the Royal Opera House Ballet Production of the Nutcracker and i have a dvd of that production from the royal opera House i love it♥
New York City Ballet Nutcracker with Balanchine's choreography is THE Nutcracker. All others pale in comparison
SJ Cohe
I see NYCB's Nutcracker every year, and it utterly divine. I would love to see the ROH one someday.
Well, in 1997, 1998, & 2003 "The Nutcracker" was off & they did "Cinderella" instead.
Is the girl playing Clara now starring in the new Cats movie?
Yes! Francesca Hayward
Does anybody know the name of the song playing at 0:33 just asking because I am practicing a dance in ballet with that song and would love to practice at home with the music but I don't have it (pls answer) 🙏
Laila’s DIY channel its russian (trepak)

I'm not seeing the nutcracker this year and I'm so disappointed
That comment is 3 years ago. I hope you've had the chance to see it since then (even if last year's might have been a recording).

OMG YES ZAYN MALIK HAHAHA
It is going to be Christmas this year without it, and if that thought depresses you, go cheer up by listening to the message of another Christmas classic:. ruclips.net/video/W8iTktZx1FE/видео.html
Wait I thought Clara and the Sugar Plum Fairy is the same in the story?
Is Zayn Malik coming today? HAHAHAHAHA
Paganism.
Clara should be blonde
And it's fits better and it's how she is in the story
marisa liu since when in the story? I don't think it really matters there aren't many people (heck even white people) who are naturally blonde in the scheme of things, most people are some shade of brown in the UK
meowool I’m not agreeing with the statement that Clara should be blonde but they could use a wig
when i picture her i picture a brunette
