Florence Price composed her Piano Sonata in E minor in 1932, one year before the Chicago Symphony Orchestra premiered her first symphony, making Price’s piece the first composition by an African-American woman to be played by a major orchestra.

    Beautiful ♥️
My 7 year old granddaughter who just learned Heller Avalanche, recently saw Grammy winner, Michelle Cann play pieces composed by Margaret Bonds and Florence Price. Incredible show. She loved it.

We must think this fantastic Lady in the same house with Copland, Gershwin, Barber, Ives, Bernstein, Joplin. Monk and you name it.

I hope you see this, Antonio. Your words were so aptly put. The names you put Florence Price in with were so spot-on I simply had to respond to your comment from 2 years ago. Like a message in a bottle in the sea, it was there for me to stumble upon.
      So delighted I did.

This music is unabashedly American. We can thank an enslaved group of people who never gave up on creating beauty wherever they could and keeping their sounds alive. Then passing them down and sharing with the world!
