Punta is a Garifuna Music genre as well as cultural dance. It is as poetic folk art genre through which social commentary is frequently expressed. The dance represents sexual dialogue between male and female who attempt to outdo each other with unique stylized movements. It is characterized by the shaking of the hips and features an almost motionless upper torso in contrast to the constant movement of the hips, legs, and feet, creating the characteristic shaking of the buttocks found in many African-derived dances.

Diamond Baby I love how you not only showed a childish mindset with your hostility, but stupidity as well.
Let me educate you on why It was called Boriken, it’s because it was named by the indigenous taínos which in English means “Land of the valiant lord”. The name came from the Taino-Arawak people, The terms “Boricua” and “Borinqueño” derive from the words “Boriken” and “Borinquen”respectively. And are commonly used to identify someone who is or has Puerto Rican descent.
There are still Puerto Rican’s today who call our lovely land “Boriken” today, please educate yourself next time your hostility decides to overpower your ego.

I was taught how to dance Bomba in school. It was part of the curriculum in my home town Rincón. We traveled all over the Island to dance in festivals. Ada García was my teacher and she still is the director of Bellos Atardeceres Ballet. I love our African roots. Those drums, we can feel them in the heart.

+Imani Warren I'm just glad that my island treasures this and as a community we celebrate it. This stuff has to survive so long as we have our feet grounded on planet Earth. This is our legacy, we must keep our kids seeing these celebrations, and always see the beauty and strength in this. Our ancestors didn't have power in their situation, but they were never powerless. I'm sure the ISLANDS and the beauty of their surroundings also gave then strength, wild flowers, a little frog found no where else in the world, food, dance, foundational support as a community. They endured with pride and grace and weren't uninformed about who they are.

I was three weeks old when my parents moved to Puerto Rico. Learned to swim as an infant in a tide pool at Crash Boat Beach before I could walk. I actually remember, at 3 years old, the beautiful flowers on the trees and the many people who stopped walking to pinch my chubby pink cheeks. Que lindo, they said. I'm 66 years old now and I still long to splash in the ocean tide pools of Puerto Rico's Crash Boat Beach! It is like a sense or body memory. Wonder what its like now. Unfortunately, I now live in dry, hot, relentless cactus Arizona. Hate it, but love mi familia!

Yes there are many who are ignorant to the fact that Africans were brought over on the same boats, but dropped off on different islands, and throughout the Americas... the slavery that developed throughout the southern parts of the US, chattel slavery it is called.. destroyed what little that was retained from Africa.. with the exceptions of the Gullah people of coastal Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida.
