10 Great Shots in The Return (Zvyagintsev, 2003)

- In 2003, Andrei Zvyagintsev has his feature film debut on theatres, The Return, snatching a Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and many other prizes around the world, with a road movie of great emotional depth, with outstanding acting and cinematography. In this video, the film's aesthetic is explored by studying 10 different shots, individually framed, to better understand Zvyagintsev's and Mikhail Krichman's (DoP) visual language.

This channel is soo non-clichéd (not that I would mind) in term’s of artistic cinema (the films you choose to speak ab esp)- Instead of just hearing the same old film’s spoken about - you really appreciate the medium and are too, at least in my eyes a total deep diver. Lovethis channel.

Can I ask - what software or application did you use to capture the Polaroid-like photos? Very effective and aesthetic.

As for the pictures, I've produced them on Adobe Photoshop, using a polaroid template and direct print-screens from the film file. The cinematography is amazing almost overshadowed by the wonderful acting of the two boys. Amazing stuff.
I really liked The Banishment more though for some reason which is not popular opinion. I liked the cinematography of Loveless but it was hard to watch the parents fighting and being so selfish. The story didn’t appeal to me like the others do. Just getting around to watching Leviathan soon.

Hi Colin! I agree 100% with you, the performances in this film, especially by the young duo, are thoroughly outstanding. I think you will appeciate Leviathan too, it showcases fine cinematography, with great acting and a socially conscious character that highlights the troubles of modern Russia methodically, but it's more digestible than Loveless. Have you watched Elena? Not my favourite work of his, but it does have its moments and is relentless in its depiction of a materialistic, honourless, selfish society just as well. Politics destroyed filmaker like from Russia ( Andrey Zy) or Iran ( Asghar Farhadi and Roustayi ). I hope all of those artist safe, and keep bless us with their art. My sympathy with all of the artist who are in trouble because of their country, I hope they are all safe and keep bless us with their majestic works. ❤🙏
Zvyagintsev was not destroyed. He has left the country, was present at events, writes new projects.
Indeed, in his most recent films Zvyagintsev exposed the deeply-rooted corruption and cronyism amidst church and state, as well as the detachment, amorality and desensitization found in modern society, and this has led to much criticism and made it difficult to work in Russia. I'm curious in regards to his upcoming project in the USA.
