    Since this video was so helpful, I'm going to add something for others that I've learned regarding the clutch orientation, since you really don't want to have to disassemble the clutch assembly after you learn you did it wrong. There are two tabs on the outer race of the clutch. One of those tabs has a dimple in the end of it. That dimple goes toward the front of the reel. Also the crenelated (slotted like the top of a castle wall) end of the clutch basket goes toward the front. (That may be obvious since the white plastic piece has to fit into those slots.)

      My assembly on the pinion when all is put together is about 2/16 too tall and not flush with the body for the last piece, the 3 hole plate that secures the pinion . Is what you posted my mistake. Penn BTL 2 1000. Help.

      @@12babyapes59 Sorry, I don't know the 1000 or if it is different, or how.

    Having done six of these now, here's something else that may be useful if the reel has never been opened before or it is winding quietly and without grind before starting. Penn does not follow the schematic exactly as far as shims and washers are concerned. On two of mine, there was no lower clutch washer installed and there were two washers where the upper clutch washer was supposed to be. Being OCD, I set everything according to the schematic and the reels became very noisy. So, take careful note of the number and location and, if possible, the thickness of each shim and washer and put them back exactly as you found them. I measured all the shims and washers that I took out of these reels and found thicknesses of 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 0.8, and 1.00 mm. Sometimes Penn will use multiple shims or washers in place of one, but keep the total thickness the same. Cross shaft shims straight from Penn had actual thicknesses of 0.2 mm and the upper and lower clutch washers were 1.00 mm. But as I said, you may find the lower clutch washer missing entirely. Twice my upper clutch washer was replaced with a 0.2 mm and 0.8 mm washer pair.

      Thanks again. I found a reel washer on the garage floor, Now I have to figure which reel and where it came from.

    Awesome detail and great tip about using the box! I have three suggestions, one is I would recommend using gloves especially when dealing with gas and grease. Second is clean any gas or grease residue off of the external part of the reel very well. Lastly make sure you thoroughly clean your hands before handling the reel bail, you do not want any petroleum products getting on your fishing line. Fish can pick up the slight scent, a few test have shown that petroleum products will keep fish away. Heck I won't even put on mosquito spray anywhere near my fishing gear. Again just my .02

      to add to your comment, never apply spray on sunscreen anywhere near your fishing line.

    Great video. I just cleaned my Battle 3 using this video as a guide. I definitely got all the gunk cleaned out of everything and put what I think is a good amount of grease all over the proper spots.
    The reel is definitely smoother than it was and it doesn’t stick in any particular spots as I turn the reel, but the whole thing just feels stiff. Almost like something is rubbing somewhere, causing a little bit of tension or friction when I’m reeling.
    The only thing I didn’t take apart completely was the bearings. I wonder if that’s causing the issue I’m having now.

    • @SRadigFishing
      @SRadigFishing  Год назад

      Usually it is the bearings that give me the grief.

      You may have gotten one of those real thin washers in the wrong sequence in the stack or perhaps gotten two of them on the same end of a bearing or shaft causing the other end to rub on a non moving surface. Just some thoughts???

    • @WillInWestPalm
      @WillInWestPalm Год назад

      Sometimes a bearing or two do need to be replaced. And do make sure you don't use too much grease. You only need a little.

    I been trying to assemble the pinion and the clutch race assembly, with your video ,it's a Penn BTL2 1000 very similar just less shims in some areas. So after multiple attempts the whole assembly ends up too tall so the last piece the 3-hole plate the one with the spring, it rests about 2/16 above the frame body and someone commented that race housing has to go a certain way. any help S.Radig

      Not exactly sure of your problem but Penn has the reel schematic breakdown of the reels on line. Maybe that could help.

    You said the Fierce and Battle are very similar. Could you compare the Battle and Fierce in terms of performance?

    • @SRadigFishing
      @SRadigFishing  2 года назад

      Performance wise I can't tell the difference, the Battle is better in Penn's claims. I have and use a bunch of Fierce II's even 8000 size cat fishing and they have performed great. For my money the Fierce is all I need. I think the new Fierce III's would be a great reel.

      I use old cloth to line the inside of the box. That keeps the parts from bouncing out of the box. A piece of an old sheet or t-shirt light in color works well.
