George Van Eps 7 string with low A many many decades ago and Lenny Breau with 7 string high A. Hope this helps. Seems to be a lot of interest in 7 string shredding. Listen to the guys above plus Ron Eschete, Bucky Pizzerelli, Howard Alden and Jimmy bruno for a different perspective.
The truth is guys Fender were the first to produce a 7 String (rock) guitar. It never went into production but in 1987 they made the Alex Gregory 7 string Strat - have a look at it on Strat Central dot com.

I just got a 7 string Schecter and holy crap it messes up your playing thanks to the extra string putting you off where to put your fingers.
