Faux mother of pearl - Polymer clay tutorial 207

- How to make a super-realistic oyster shell mother of pearl imitation, using Premo and Pardo clays. There are color recipes for both Premo and Pardo during the video.
Remember this is to get the oyster shell type of mother of pearl. For other types, you can tweak the amount of color you're adding. If you decide to color your Premo with mica powders only, do not add any colored clay to the mixes, as the colored mica powders have pigment and will color your clay.
I will do the project with this in a separate video. I did not want to make too long of a video and this is too pretty to mess it up, you deserve a full length process.

Signed and shared!
This must be very frustrating, it's usually the opposite, businesses try to encourage people to buy their products, not withhold them!
Just signed and donated. I did manage to find Pardo on Etsy and ebay. Could not find a way to obtain the gold. Overseas sellers either don't ship to the states or don't have colors needed for the project in this fabulous tutorial.
@@Victoria-ve3so Thank you! I get mine from the UK, there's an online store named buddlycrafts.com. The lady has pretty much all Pardo and the shipping is very decent and fast. Go look by brand (Viva Decor) I am putting here the link but not sure if it will not get hidden by RUclips. She has all the Pardo in the world. Just be careful, in Europe the translucent clear is named "Agate" buddlycrafts.com/shop/brand-1/viva-decor-220/
You are a polymer clay genius. You should be famous and have your own art exposition. This is talent, commitment, art.
Awww thank you!
Very, very cool! Best representation of pearl/oyster shell yet.
Thank you!
Your classes are wonderful and instructions very clear. Thank you
Thank you, Rezvan!
Totally excellent! That's the closest thing to real pearl that I've seen, and it's lovely! I am looking forward to making some shells soon! Thank you for sharing this tutorial! 🩷🤍💚🩵🐚
Thank you for the kind words!
Gorgeous, Day!!! Thank you so much for doing it in both Premo and Pardo. As you know, I love Pardo translucent. I can't wait to try it!
Thank you, Deborah!
Thank you so much for sharing your artistic skills with us. Being a beginner, not knowing much and spending alot of money to get started, as you know really helps.
Thanks for watching!
Wow, the Pardo MoP looks astonishingly good, Kalyana.
Thank you!
You have God given talent. so beautiful!
Thank you, Annie!
This is phenomenal work, Kalyana - you are so clever... 🏆

I will, I promise!
Absolutely beautiful! Thank you for sharing this technique! Happy Holidays!
Thank you, Nicole! Happy holidays to you too!
never saw such beautiful clay
Yes, it's not very known in the US because Hobby Lobby and Michaels blundered it years ago when they put up for sale half-baked clay.
thanks a lot for detailed presentation. will try it too.
So pretty! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you!
My family will love
what a beauty! Thanks for tutorial :)
Thank you!
Thank you so much! Just received my Pardo Clay order! Will try!
Hope you like it!
This is the 2nd tutorial I've watched and I have to say this work is stunning. The camera quality unfortunately doesn't do justice obviously but I can see past that and congratulate you.
Thank you. Yes, this was in the beginning when I didn't have very good equipment
Very pretty thank you for sharing 👍🌹🌹
Thank you too
Looks great and seems easy to make it by myself
Yes, it's not hard to make at all, as long as you follow the number of reducing and stacking exactly, you'll get that effect. Trust me, it took me many attempts until I found the exact way to get the most layered pearlescence effect.
Looks magnificently! Merry Christmas!
Thank you! to you too!
Gorgeous 💗
Thank you!!
Que maravilla! Me encanta! Gracias
Gracias, Miren!
Love love it! thanks a million for sharing :)
Thank you!
C'est vraiment magnifique ! merci pour ce partage :)

Lovely video
Awesome thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
OMG I can't believe my eyes...is this for real?!
Yes. it is :_ Thank you!
what a good find thanks alot and kind regards
Thank you!
The piece came out stunning !! Can I ask if you sanded your pieces after you baked them or did they come out with shine like that?
Sanded and buffed
Kalyana Design Tutorials what size of sanding paper do you recommend? Do you recommend doing wet sanding or dry ? .
I think it will be amazing to make some Christmas tree decoration from this clay
Oh yes, they come up just gorgeous!
Very nicely comparison video. I actually like the Premo over the Pardo in this instance. When you look at them side by side 19:25 = the Pardo on the right seems very muted and over blended. It actually looks faded or blurred and you cannot really pick out any color with certainty. The Premo, on the other hand (the left side) is very well defined. The striations of color are bold and beautiful and one could easily pull out colors to match to different outfits or looks. It has character. The lines look like landscapes. So, if I had a choice to buy one or the other, I would be more inclined to buy the Premo one because it stands out, it's visually interesting, and has more depth of color and color variation. Just my opinion.
I agree with the looks arguments. But Premo doesn't look realistic enough for mother of pearl, while Pardo does.
Love them
Thank you!
j aime beaucoup c est magnifique
Merci, regine!
Beautiful! What's the brand of the interference powders? Could you provide a link?
Thank you! The ones I use in this video are called "Kolor EFX", I got them from ebay. I will provide you the link to the ebay vendor I got them from. click on the selection choice, you can get sampler kits. I got the 5g sampler kit, it goes a long way.www.ebay.com/itm/KolorEFX-Interference-Pearl-Pigment-Paint-Base-Clear-dip-Fluid-Art-Polish-Ghost-/121455323561
Thanks!
Thank you for sharing! Would we use the same techniques to make a slab?
Yes, absolutely
Очень красиво.
Спасибо
Is there a limit as to how much mica powder/interference powder you can add to a clay without drying out the clay?
Yes, there is. I add clay softener so that I can go a bit further, but there's a limit on that too. But trust me, you get the desired effect way before that limit is reached. You test if you got enough by folding the clay and passing it through the pasta machine. If you can see a mica shift effect in the folding line you're there. You can also test a small piece by pressing texture and shaving the raised parts to see if you got the mica shift effect.
@@KalyanaDesignTutorials I was thinking about adding a bit of clay softener as well, or perhaps a touch of liquid clay. The problem for those of us who aren't in business is we don't want to buy a million colours, & I already have several Jacquard pigment powders. Us hobbyists need to improvise.
I started doing this because I needed colors that simply either weren't manufactured or had mica+pigment instead of colored mica. Very important especially in faux gemstones. I.e. there is no green pearlescent clay on the market that would be the proper color to make a faux chatoyant malachite.
I can't find Pardo Platinum anywhere. Any other suggestions? I absolutely LOVE your videos. Thank you so much for sharing. Happy New Year.
I get mine from polyclayplay.com. She has the lowest prices and the best selection. The platinum I am using here is the one in the Jewelry line (there is also one in the Mica clay line, that's the one I used for the mica shift comparison a while back). I know she's on vacation and won't ship anything before the new year, but that's just a few days away. so you can go order now.
I tried there but it said "unavailable". Maybe she is just out of it. I will try again after New Years. I ordered the other colors from her. Can't wait to try. Thank you.
It shows available to me, I was able to add to my cart. Are you sure you didn't try to add the mother of pearl? That is one she is definitely out of. If it's not in yours and you're in a hurry, get some platinum of the mica line, and then get in touch with her to ask when is she bringing the platinum in the jewelry line. The platinum in the mica line is just fine, it's just a very barely noticeable different white than the one in the jewelry line but it will work just fine for the mother of pearl project It is entirely possible that she will run out soon as people seem to really love the look of mother of pearl done with Pardo, but no worries, she is getting new shipments I think every 10 days or two weeks and she will be able to get more.
Thank you.
Ok so now it's out. Trish should be back soon and I know she's order more. As I said before, try the Mica line Platinum before that one runs out too! I know it takes her anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks to get more Pardo.
Day, at the beginning of the Pardo segment, you said you had mixed the translucent with Platinum........is that just 1 of the white squares? Or are all of the light squares the mixture? Sorry....I am just not clear on this. Thanks so much!!
All of the squares are the mixture. I know it's hard to find Platinum or Mother of Pearl anymore in the US but you can order it at buddlycrafts.com in the UK. I promise you her prices almost rival Trish's and she has very decent shipping costs. That's where I get my colors that can't be found here anymore
Thanks so much, Day! I actually do have both Platinum AND Mother of Pearl. (I’m not sure where I got them) .......but glad to get the info 💜💜💜
Wonderful! You are absolutely going to love it! I was amazed myself when I tried it for the first time.
I want to try Pardo clay but I'm worried because it's not like the other Clay's. Do you have any advice for me? Thank you so much Day for your amazing videos.
Actually I have made several tutorials on how to work with Pardo, including how to condition it (a tutorial and a live showing the mistakes people do when conditioning it). If you do a youtube search using the words Kalyana Design Pardo you'll find them. I guess I should make a playlist just with the Pardo tutorials. Also look forward to February because I'm going to start doing more Pardo tutorials. ruclips.net/user/results?search_query=kalyana+design+pardo
@@KalyanaDesignTutorials thank you so very much. I'll go check out your channel for Pardo.
I watched a couple of your videos and decided to order 6 of the translucent from Poly Play. I'm excited to try it. I will be watching all your videos on it first. Can't wait to see new videos on it. Thank you hun for all your advice.
It is a beautiful clay. Just remember, condition it thin, don't force it in textures (it might crack) and if you do translucent gems, dunk it in ice water right when the oven dings. Don't forget to watch the one with how to eliminate plaquing. and, very important, don't mix it with other clays.
@@KalyanaDesignTutorials okay again thank you so very much for all your help. I'm still watching your videos on the Pardo. I absolutely love your videos I always learn something new.
Глина прозрачная или полупрозрачным?
Он полупрозрачный. Я знаю, что некоторые бренды, такие как ardo, называют свою линейку «прозрачной», но на самом деле прозрачной полимерной глины не существует.
Kalyana, forgive me for asking but at 1:05 on your video the slices of polymer appear to have already been mixed with the half cuts of colour. Where is that shimmer effect from as I seem to have missed that?
Because you mix the small bits of color in white pearl polymer clay. The shimmer is from the white pearl, essentially
@@KalyanaDesignTutorials thank you for that.
No worries!
