I'm honestly surprised you didn't get suave of all people to cover this anime. Sure it's not exactly his cup of tea but it'd be a helluva way to troll the thirsty lech if you baited him into thinking this was another bit of smut, then see the look on his face when he saw all this. it would've been priceless. Nevertheless, I'm not one to look a giftepisode in the mouth and welcome another one of your fantastic episodes! :)

The Cowboy Bebop live action is like the Third Impact of anime live action adaptations. It's so scaring you come out the other side post-third impact Shinji. And it's probably the third worst live action. After Avatar and DBZ. The Death Note live action and some of the other more tame ones are nothing like this. This is the Third Impact of live actions. ☠

I'm happy to see someone talk about Colorful. I went through a bit of a phase where I was hooked on "dumb" anime comedies like Excel Saga, Puni Puni Poemy, Azumanga Daioh, Inachu Ping Pong Club, Golden Boy, Ghost Stories and Colorful. Most of these, I still have on DVD. You're right. This Anime would probably not be made today, but it's never failed to get a laugh out of me. Maybe because I was always into experimental animation like Liquid Television.

I remember watching this on G4 late at night. Funny. But it got even funnier over time for my brother and I. I bought a DVD of it last year. Being older now we started to understand what made it funny, because back then. We were just kids consuming whatever anime we could find. Have to say you're right about the experimental thing, I miss days when they took risks in the industry.

An anime like this suddenly brings to mind the golden age of the Comedy Channel in Australia, especially around the late 90s and 00s. There wasn't anime like this shown but the channel would often feature these weird and zany short cartoons inbetween the shows they had in their line-up. I can't even begin to describe most of them because there is so many of them but they were always zany, batshit crazy and so messed up that it would be immediately cancelled by Twitter.
Most of them may have been lost to time but some you can find, like Bill Plympton's famous "25 Ways to Quit Smoking". But yeah, anime like this would have fit right in on the Comedy Channel if we didn't have SBS catering for anime at the time, but it still brings a warm fuzzy to my heart remembering all those weird shorts while waiting for shows like Dr. Katz and Titus to start.

The first Anime I ever watched (that wasn't Voltron, Speed Racer, Sailor Moon, Hello Kitty, Unico, Ringing Bell, etc..) was in the spring of 1994. It was on a VHS bootleg that some college-dude made when he visited Japan. I overheard him talking with some other college guys at the local mall's food-court. I heard him telling them about _"Japanimation",_ as if it were some sort of cult he'd just joined. He noticed I was clearly eavesdropping. And, rather than talking down to high-school-me, he grinned broadly, pulls a naked VHS cassette out from his backpack and handed it to me. The masking tape label read, in black sharpie: *_Battle Angel._* I hurried home; no one was around; _perfect!_ I drew the curtains, turned out the lights...and watched. Holy shit, _this was no Sailor Moon!_ This bootleg had no subs. I had absolutely _no clue_ what the characters were saying; didn't even matter. I watched it over and over again.
When I next saw that guy, a few weeks later (turns out he was the older brother of a guy I knew in high-school), he cracks-up laughing, telling me that he'd _meant_ to give me a copy _WITH SUBS,_ and only realized his mistake later on when he was looking for his raw copy. Apparently, hastily scrawled, deliberately vague masking tape labels aren't always the most information-rich. Point is, I was hooked!

Your review of excel saga brought me here. Yahtzee mentioned it, and drew me down to searching for the opening song and your review was part of that recommendation by youtube. Looking at your channel, and seeing colorful as one of more more recent reviews, made me feel at home.
Colorful was an anime I have never heard anyone else talk about outside of the circle of friends whom I have introduced it to, and your comparison of it to Liquid Television is spot on, as I am sure it took a lot of notes from that show just a couple years later when making it.
I am not a huge anime fan as most leave me sad that such labor given to the artwork isnt shared by the writing quality. However, the more inane examples of anime somehow shine more than the serious attempts.
Unless its the really artsy stuff like 'Catsoup' (sadly as obscure as colorful), then I skip most of it after an episode or so.
ADV may be much maligned, but during this period of 2000-2002, they were very much on fire. Excel saga, colorful, rah xephon, Last exile, to name merely a few examples... these made me hold out hope that anime had a future in the western world that wasnt a snide derision of what would be later known as weebo.
This review makes me mourn that new found hope I felt two decades ago.
As perverse and highly non-PC colorful is, even my prudish friends enjoyed it. Like the scene where the girl was staring at the guys zipper, hoping she could make it magically unzip with her mind... My friend Abby, notorious for her borderline quaker sexual expression, admitted immediately how accurate that was... lol Sexual repression is a funny thing.
Anyways, sorry for the long winded comment. It's the first time I have ever seen any other living being talk about it, so I had to engage a bit more than I otherwise normally would. Thanks for the reviews. I shall sub and look forward to more of your insight.

You mention how people get into anime. I was always into cartoons since I was five or so, drawing stuff on any paper I could find, so I was watching all kinds of anime without knowing they were from Japan. Around 1994 I realized what it was I had always been watching, and started to draw it. That was because I loved specifically how they drew all the folds in the clothes and the great details they made in characters and backgrounds etc. Story, characters and themes all came later - it was all the way they created them aesthetically that first drew me towards anime/manga.

The dub of this series is on both HIDIVE & (last time I checked) VRV. People who want to watch the sub version are S.O.L. I'm afraid. You'll either have to get the DVD or use other methods to see the sub version. I wish that this weren't the case since I try to stay out of the sub vs. dub wars as much as possible, but it is what it is. Side note: There's also an anime film called "Colorful" as well which is VERY different from this show so anyone who's seen this show MIGHT want to be careful if they hear the name "Colorful" come up in conversations about anime.

When I first saw the notification I was "Oh shit, he's doing Colorful! I haven't seen that since the Comcast OnDemand/Starz anime days! I remember it being pretty funny" and watching through it, jogged my memory and of course, the skit that Bennett talks about at 11:08 came back and I was reminded of the transphobia along with the ace ventura cherry on top for reference -_-

Can't wait for that Cowboy Bebop live action review. Perhaps Sage can articulate what we are all feeling.

Who are these we you are talking about. Not everyone in this fandom hates live action Cowboy Bebop so don't assume that everyone shares your opinion about it. Then again maybe you think you are Venom or something so you refer yourself "we" instead of "I".

Mother's Basement made an in-depth video talking about the general problems of the show.

@@Mecha82 Wow projecting much? Interesting that you can extrapolate such an assumption from literally nothing; at no point was there a comment about being for or against the show. However, it appears you have no interest in actual conversation or introspection about the show so it begs the question as to why you even watch Anime Abandon if you are so upset by the possible analysis of a popular franchise? By the way, the use of "we" is a common literary device in english to express inclusivity.

@@Mecha82 Why so defensive? Why make a comic book reference to Venom, where the hell'd that come from?
Besides, a majority does hate it, all the big RUclipsrs dislike it, and most of their fans agree.
No one's stopping you from liking the live-action version, it just proves you have shit taste. No different than how anime fans have shit taste.
