I would love to hear an interview with Jimmy Herring and one of you guys. I love this stuff and enjoy the things you nice people are doing for the musician community. Thank you for the time and effort you put into this.
Josh, really glad you had Rick on your channel. I started playing in bars when I was 14. I am 54 now. Rick is right, the bar owners never questioned age. We just played the music. Hit up Rhett Shull sometime soon. He enticed Rick into starting a RUclips channel and help Rick a lot with camera settings in the beginning hell he probably still helps him with the settings. Rick is a musical genius and hard working man with a good group of people around him....Hit up Dave Onorato too!
Josh is one of the finest and most well rounded guitar players that I have been following for several years. This was a great conversation that I really enjoyed - especially because I lived in that little house and town where music was thriving! And I know Rick likes to tell that story about the soloing - but I only did it to hear Mom rock out to Hey Joe !
"Since i was 6 years old i had this friend(guitar) which i would go with by myself and never feel alone" That's beautiful. I relate to that so much My 2 favourite guys on the entire network... Thanks for the inspiration
Thanks Josh and Rick for this video, you're awesome and inspiring. I subscribe to both your channels and have learned a lot in my learning as a re-beginning guitar player from you both. Bless you both.
These interviews are top quality, I hope Josh, Joe, Pete, and the rest of the guys are able to keep them up once we beat the bug and they go back to work. Respect stay healthy all.
im 61 and I struggle and its not a fact of letting it happen to you it just happens - I can still play but not with the ease of my 20s or 30s and I fell down the stairs and screwed up my left hand its never been the same but hey Rick so cool you brought that up . Rick is the greatest and Josh dam killer
Again, awesome interview. Love the fact that you're asking intelligent questions no one else does, it feels like I'm hanging out in the same room as you guys.
This is epic! You guys should record together..... each of you bring your own connections and you guys could easily pull off an all star record that would BUST OUT
Great interview again Josh . Many thanks to both. Ref your concerns about not being able to play when the years are catching up, I am 71 now and arthritus is killing me but I still play on as form of relief . I find when I cant pick up my guitar for what ever reason the pain gets worse. Good diet and exercise are yes, really important early on, but mate just dont stop playing! Keep Rocking Russ. (Down under)
Wow, very similar to Jeff Tweedy, in that his dad also worked for the railroad and he was recovering from a bone break and that is what got him playing guitar.
Great to see Josh on one of Rick's videos. He's probs the most fluent guitarists around at the mo. Both very honest and humble guys and amazing players... great stuff!!!
I love the better amp vs. better guitar argument! I too agree that having a great amp is more important than having a "great" guitar, because the way a guitar plays depends more on the set-up and electronics, which are somewhat easy to work on, even for a beginner. Pickups are easy to upgrade and are very affordable these days with companies like GFS. New tuners, bridges, etc, all pretty easy stuff. However, it's kinda hard to make a crappy amp sound good. I always think about Jack Pearson and how he plays a bunch of Squier guitars, and he makes them sing beautifully through his custom VVT amp. $100 guitar, $1,500 amp. Simple math.
That took me back to my late teens where we would look at the liner notes of records and find out new players and then search out new records they had done session work on. Larry Carlton, Jay Graydon, Steve Lukather, Abraham Laboriel, Lee Ritenour, the Porcaro Brothers, Steve Gadd, Carlos Rios, John Tropea, Rick Marotta, David Spinozza, Rick Marotta, Steve Khan, Dave Grusin, Harvey Mason, Alex Acuna, Michael Landau etc. We'd just hunt down anything they played on and then that would lead to discoveries of new musicians to follow. It was so much fun.
Love Rick , he knows everything about music... ThxJosh... I d love to hear Jack Pearson reply to the cheapo guitar or the bad Amp question . ?? Cheers ..Be safe
@@Blazes_58 I'm sorry for you loss, truly, but he didn't die of Corona virus. Something else was going on and maybe he tested positive with the unreliable PCR test (if you don't know how those work you should research), but the virus doesn't kill anyone by itself. It does no more than any flu virus would do to a person with a compromised immune system, if it even exists (this "new" strain). They are marking people as cOvID deaths even if it's not the main cause, with is almost always the case. In many cases, they don't even test, they just assume based on symtoms which could be any virus. They are lying to us for many reasons, but most people are asleep and brainwashed from day 1 and can't see the obvious.
'How did you figure that out?' - 'I Just listened to it'....I think you missed out the part about putting the needle back to each section 20 times before you worked it out RIck :)
Great interview. Saw 3 of your interviews know... super interesting and relatable for me although I’m a 52 year old dude from Denmark. I want you to do this with scofield ... 😁👍🏼... how you would manage to get him to do that I have no idea.... but I want to see it ...😉 Thanks man 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
LOL awesome! Hey Rick if you look at this stuff, I grew up in the Syracuse area. In Rochester did you ever play at the Diplomat Party Lounge on Lyell? Owned by my friends the Fusillis with the band Freedom Tree. I worked there too while I was commuting from school in Syracuse.
I completely changed my right hand technique at the age of 40 ... But probably only because I'd quit playing at age 30-31 after 13 years as a music major. I had to start some practice from scratch, so I used the chance to change the basics.
Josh smith please have tommy emanuel and Jenny wayne shepherd on your show.....so many amazing musicians you can have on, but I'd love to hear your episode with either of these guys
Hi Josh, been watching your channel develope along. Please raise your audio level. Your guests are easier to hear, but your level always seems lower. Best wishes.
Stealing that half-diminished trick for practicing minor ii-V's :-) Also fascinating to watch the trends emerge in the Ten Questions: Everyone answers "what keeps you practicing" with "it's fun." Happy to be in this weird guild of practicing nuts.
Rick is a great interviewer but doesn't like to get too introspective about being interviewed...there were a couple of great questions that really dug deep, and he almost gave one-word answers...lol
great as always both of you!very inspiring but, and yes there is always one :) fix your level Josh on most of your videos you are very low and guitar high
Very cool! Thanks so much for doing this!
Any time!

@@JoshSmithGuitar Yes!! Jimmy Herring would be awesome!
Jimmy Herring! Another NC music legend!
I’m from WNY, and whenever Rick talks about his childhood I picture at least a foot of snow outside the window.
Same! Had no idea he was from Rochester until i watched this video! Go Bills!

Awesome! Thank you!
two great artists sharing their inspirations and talent, just so motivating even for a guy who has played off and on for 50 years! thanks
All I want to do these days is talk about guitar. This is great for scratching that itch. Thanks Josh.
These interviews are top quality, I hope Josh, Joe, Pete, and the rest of the guys are able to keep them up once we beat the bug and they go back to work. Respect stay healthy all.
Great interview Josh! this channel is the shit
This is pure gold! Thank you both!

Rick's stories and experiences are always enlightening to listen to. Thanks for doing this. :)
Josh, this is great. I love you both for sure but your questions are really good. I just love this channel.
Thanks so much!
Mr.Beato... you have improved enough for our liking. LOL Make an epic guitar record! We will for sure buy it.
Great interview Josh...my kids at LaGrange Middle School still talk about how great of a musician you are, and how “cool” you were. Thank you again!
Wow, thanks!
you two are doing great work with keeping good music alive !

Killer interview, Josh! It's so cool to hear Rick's backstory all condensed down in a single interview. What a cool guy.

Great interview! I like that the interview went places that Rick doesn't normally go.
