Hey hows it going Jon my name is Trey and i have been running and distance running since 2017. As a former powerlifter when i first started in 2017 i was way SLOWER my first marathon was in 2017 myrtle beach i did in 4 hours and 36 min.......then i did charlotte in november 2017 and got my time down to 4 14 on a COLD charlotte morning. Im way better in the cold by the way...then in March 2019 i ran my fastest marathon in 4 hours 1 min just missing sub 4....in 70 degree weather that year.....i thought i was on my way to big gains after that but in march 2022 myrtle beach when i ran marathon i struggled and barely ran a 4 16 marathon no where near sub 4........and now just yesterday myrtle beach marathon in the high humidity i struggled once again and barely got under 4 20..........i feel like i have went BACKWARDS. I was wondering if u you had any advice on what i would need do in more of my long runs and training....i mostly train my long runs at lower heart rate slower pace 9 min paces.....do u think i need to start doing more tempo long runs? like try getting more 8 min paces in my long runs mostly? i started out conservative yesterday 9 min paces and fell apart after mile 19, prabably was humdity. Anyway it has been very very frustrating as runner who gets up 6 and 7 am EVERY weekend to run 18-20 milers and put in all mileage i do and never see results....do u think i just need to start focusing on getting faster at shorter distances like the half marathon? my best half marathon is around 1 44, but all out effort. I also do strength training 5x5 bench pressing and squats every week. Any advice on how i could blast past this marathon plateau in future? do you think i should try get up 23-24 miles in training but at easier pace? maybe around 10 to 1030 paces? just to get use to time on feet and to try not hit wall when marathon day comes?
From what i've learned in my running years, doing that long of a distance as training, even for a marathon, will cost you more than it will increase your fitness. You should probably run more often, but over shorter distances. That way, you'll recover more easily and be able to benefit fully from the training.
As an ultra runner, running up to 3 hours at a time is beneficial, but you start having diminishing returns over 3 hours. But having focused long runs based on miles as part of a bigger plan is not going to hurt you. Keep easy runs easy and bust your butt on workouts, a mileage based long run can be considered a workout. Then rest and recover and continue with your strength training, mobility and easy runs. That's fine. You can also break up long runs, run half mileage in the morning and the rest in the evening. It's not ideal but it's still brick laying and building your base. Just showing up will benefit the goal.
Also overall mileage in a week and increasing every week is another way to build the base. Maybe that works better for you. Either way there isn't a one size fits all for everyone.
Sounds like you’re kind of beating yourself up about not being able to hit your runs just right. I think if you went out there with a clear mind and actually just ran with no extra noise (camera footage, different angles, talking, etc) that you would actually be able to do it. Not trying to be rude or anything but maybe that focus and energy you’re putting into all of that is what you need to finish your goal of the run.
Yeah I think for me I have goals I really wanna hit. And that’s a good point most of the runs I need to focus I won’t film but if it’s long runs like this it’s honestly a destination mentally to break the long runs up haha 😂
Hey man thanks for these videos, I'm a slow runner and struggling with my first marathon training and your videos help a lot

This is so inspiring and SO relatable! 12:42 as an average pace is pretty good for a "slow" runner in my opinion!!
