    It's just my opinion... the main critical piece of safety equipment not being used is commonsense! You fell through, your friend fell through, this other guy fell through, it should have been obvious, the ice is not safe!

      These guys stop fishing this lake by time it's actually safe, it's fished out. Cuz morons do this on this lake every year. Bend it caused it by making these videos in the first place . He can get bent lol

    Ice picks during ice season should be mandatory just like life vests in a boat. It's the only way some people are ever going to self rescue and they cost about $10

    We can not forget that dead is a very long time! Don't cheap-out and die cuz you didn't drop $12 for safety equipment.
    I have 4 sets of spikes and make sure anyone that goes with me early in the season has a set around their neck. I also have 2 throw bags / rope. For the price of one cheap rod/real combo it's nice to have peace of mind. And don't forget the spud bar!

    Lack of safety gear hurts to see... I have been alone and in that situation to many times to count and that guy is going to have some PTSD 100% from that unfortunately and people need to understand all people don't weigh the same thus not being equal! SPUD BARS SAVE LIVES PEOPLE!

    I yanked a teen snowmobiler once from where Johnson Brook meets Lake Sunapee, next to Sunapee State beach. Kid tumbled over handlebars into the brook. Completely soaked. 5 degrees out that day. Snowmobile was stuck head first in about 5ft of moving water at the ice line.

      @Bend It Fishing yeah he could have easily been swept under the ice by the current. Funny thing is that his father came searching for him after we had him warming up in our bobhouse, and the father jumped into the brook and lifted the machine out back onto the ice. He was standing in 5ft of water! Totally bonkers..

    Spikes, spud bars and common sense are a must early ice. It's good others were there but if you hadn't been, this man would have drowned. Good on yas!

    That’s my hometown lake and the only ice I’ve ever gone through. My buddy went through as well years ago across at the ledges with 2 ft of ice. Never a bad idea to have a throw bag. Nice work probably the biggest fish you’ll pull out of hole this season 😊

    I have to admit I never wear spikes but I'm going to start. Can't imagine not being able to help someone who's gone through because I couldn't get any traction.

    Take a throwable boat cushion with good handles and wrap 30 ft of poly rope around it , use as a seat on a milk crate or save your buddy, and remember there’s no such thing as safe ice✌🏻

    A throw bag is the best option. Can throw it 50' and never have to get close to unsafe ice. Glad you had spikes. Remember everyone there is no such thing as safe ice. Always be safe no matter the thickness. Can go from 10" to 1" in a step.

    Glad everyone is safe, a rope is an essential piece of gear, wouldn't have to get too close.
    Otherwise, everyone else makes the obvious point, always check your ice

      I have always carried a throw or rescue rope ice fishing and canoe fishing.

      @@JA-hn3to after watching a man go in thru a pocket of very thin stuff and an old timer toss/sliding him a 100' rope with a 2# window weight tied to it rather than go near him I went straight to a hardware store to get some heavy line similar to paracord with an 800# strength rate. It is coiled in a spare bucket. I recommend everyone spend the 40 bucks for it, it really does save lives when every second counts.

    Seemed like forever before anyone reacted to that guy thrashing in the water... I realize it was moments.... Every moment counted in that situation. Glad that it ended well.
    You said that "THREE PERSONS, INCLUDING YOURSELF, WENT THRU THE ICE" that morning?!?! Yet you, and the others, continued to fish??? I believe that I would have gone home, waited a week to give the ice more time to freeze up, and tried again. But that is me. I am retired from the Coast Guard and am extremely safety conscious... I have seen the tragic results of poorly made choices or decisions. Hopefully everyone learns a really good lesson from your video.

    yeah you need picks early season for sure. I had this happened a couple years ago but i know the guy walked over a pressure crack and the ice was good on both sides. my brother and I had to do the human chain to get him out. I also fell in myself without picks and I just remembered to kick my feet and and get myself up on the ice.

    Lots of crappy ice here in Wisconsin now and someone fell in at the spot I was fishing yesterday. Most people weren't wearing float suits or spikes. I always wear both and have a floating throw rope in the sled. That guy is lucky that other people were around and that you had your spikes. Ice cleats are also a really good idea so you can actually get traction to pull someone out.

      @@BendItFishing I bought one with 70ft of thick floating rope. It has a plastic ring on the end so the ring and rope combined have enough weight to toss it a good distance to someone, but light enough that it could hit them in the face and wouldn't even hurt.

    If I were to fish on thin ice, I’d put all my stuff on a 20’ aluminum ladder section and drag that out, and always have it within easy reach. While fishing I’d sit on it. I fished in 4” ice one time in deep water (Cayuga Lake, NY) and it’s not for me. I don’t like it until 8” or so.

    To keep the ice spikes handy w/o them being an annoyance, I sewed two velcro strips onto my Striker ice suit and put velcro around the handle of each spike. That way they're fixed in place but ready to grab. Be careful out there folks.
