My question is, if you make obvious modifications such as the aggressive ridges on the lower portion does that change the "status" of the cane from walking aid to weapon? I know virtually anything can potentially be an improvised weapon. Knowing how warped our legal system can be too many modifications might backfire
What brand of cane was this you started with? I'm having a hard time figuring out what brands are considered fighting canes with enough of an opening to the curve and the dimensions overall.
You can not find a stock cane that will be suitable as a defense cane, and you have already noticed one of the main differences between a regular cane and a defense cane, the width of the opening between the shaft and the horn. This started as a standard 1” straight rod that I steamed and bent using a jig that I made for bending canes. If you do not want to make one from scratch, you can find defense canes sold on eBay fairly cheap that can possibly be customized to your liking
That cane will not stop a determined attacker. I am making another one with a 300mm x 10mm threaded rod inserted into the end .. need weight . How do I know? I was attacked by 3 attackers I put the first one in hospital with 10 staples in his head. I am disabled I have a dropped foot.. so I have no choice but to stand and fight. I was hitting him with the striking edge which is what split his head open but it did not slow him down .. I eventually lost my balance and got pulled to the floor where they kicked the crap out of me breaking both my wrists. So my advice don't think that cane will stop someone fist shot cause it wont unless very well aimed shot to the knee . But that not always possible when u are attacked one has seconds to react after been punched in the face.. my new cane is 30mm at the end ..stopping power
So we are in strange times brother,a cane is obviously not the best weapon,but in a fix it’s better than nothing,my option is to learn to hide behind your cane making it a something in between you and your attacker,if he has a weapon you buy maybe a few seconds,but it’s not a weapon,try not to fight, but if you have to fight with all your might,good luck brother,talking from experience.
Glad you survived the encounter, and thanks for sharing your experience. I'm older now, but in my 20's, was jumped by 3 guys. Much like your encounter, I put the first one in lots of pain with a punch between the eyes. Didn't stop him, but sure took out his fire. He ended up in the hospital getting stitches and treated for a broken nose. Now 40 years later, I use a cane because of knee problems. I practice regularly into the heavy bag. I expect the cane to only be the first line because it's already in my hand. Earned my Black belt 20 years ago. So incorporate other strikes into my self defense. I hate to have to pull the lethal stuff out, but prepared if so needed.
