Really great suggestions, I enjoy blending my own black colors. So many choices, it’s a wonderful thing to be able to chose exactly how and what one wants to put into their own mixes. Thank you.😊
Thank you very much for this lesson! I use your black already sinds a while now from the collection of Daniël Smith. But is really instructief too sea how you make it in reality. I love your black! I use it also as a neutral tint. Greatings, Nadine( Belgium)
I've specialized in watercolors for 11 years and seeing how Mr. McCracken mixes blacks is fascinating. He has combos I never would have thought of. Gotta try it now! Thank you for sharing this!
I wish RUclips had a thumbs up icon meaning & counting..."I Love It, I Love It". John thanks for bringing us up such Master Teacher, too bad you cannot have a "Laurin's Black" on your line!!!!
Thank you for this wonderful information, Laurin. Though Daniel Smith makes the McCraken Black, I wanted to understand the mixing and application process. Frankly, I think I'll work with the mixed version you shared here before purchasing the DS version.
Grateful to Laurin and Daniel Smith for making this information available. I had a bunch of the colors, but I ordered a tube of Carbazole Violet to make my own black like Laurin.
Maestro Laurin, I'm so grateful that you shared your knowledge with us. However my one complaint is, I can't believe they didn't add a second camera 🤦 in any case much appreciated, I was looking for some info on how to achieve such beautiful darks! Thanks again
Nice. There a at least a thousand ways to mix greys and black. I use Phtalo blue turquoise or as DaVinci calls it Phtalo turquoise single pigment and transparent with Daniel Smith pyrol scarlet not pyrrol red. I can lean cool or warm, maintain transparency and get black from it. There are so many more ways such as quin violet and Phtalo green and so on. I personally don’t use Prussian blue but there are many to choose from. DS didn’t reveal what this black was made from and I wished that they had been open about it. Thank you for your video and feel free to try another way to make a gorgeous deep transparent black. By the way I mix the single pigment Phtalo blue turquoise DS and blend it with Phtalo blue green shade and get a transparent Cerulean dupe. It also makes greens galore making me want to only keep my cobalt turquoise for blurred backgrounds. It’s just a pass on from one artist to another. Not everyone wants granulation everywhere. Take care
Laurin is pretty clear about what DS pigments he uses as he mixes it himself in this video, and the new tube of DS McCracken Black uses is clearly marked with pigments PB27, PR101, PV23, PV19, PR177, PY150, PR149, so not sure what you mean by DS not revealing what the black was made from.
What a treat to see this genius share something as simple and as essential as mixing and applying blacks. Thank you for posting this. Quick question, where do you find and what make do you use of drafting tape do you recommend. I use Alvin, but it gets expensive for a beginner
That was an experienced and in-depth tutorial by Laurin, it is super helpful cause I had no Idea how you would make such special black, and then change the hue to affect the feel of the painting. It was super helpful video, Thank you very much John and Laurin for coming up with this subject. I would call this Laurin's Black👍😊💙 #artistsatwork53
Very interesting formulas for getting the warm and cool black backgrounds. I, too, love Aussie Gold, and the scumbling technique on top to create the depth of color, rather than using multiple washes. Thank you.

Thank you! This is so helpful.
Fabulous video...thank you! I wonder how the second layer of black doesn’t disturb the under color

Very interesting
How do you get your drafting tape to stay in place? Does humidity place a role?
