I remember in the 90's. If your phone was next to the telly, you always know if there was a text message incoming a few seconds before the phone bleeped.
I still have a phone which does that near the right kind of speaker, but I'm led to believe 2G and even 3G are going to be phased out. Now I find it difficult to believe 2G ever will be, it's surely a necessary longer range backup? But who knows

I got it back at the end of the week. I had one of the flashing antennas as well but the reception with it was terrible so I changed it back to the original after a week or so. Miss those days of the phone accessory mall kiosks that allowed one to personalize their phone!
Aah, my first ever Nokia phone. I remember it indeed. Preferred the 3210 and 3310 I got later due to the ringtone composers but this was still a good phone. I had Motorola phones before this, but after switching to Nokia I never went back. Snappy UI, easy to use, never failed.
I remember those flashing led aerials. I also remember figuring out that the little neon indicators on extension leads would light up if you connected the leads between both ends of the antenna "spring"
As a kid my dad was an engineer working at ITT (which later became Nortel) and he used to come home with all sorts of snazzy prototype landline house phones, as they used to let staff members take the phones to try out and test. The one I liked most was a clear, totally see through Trim phone. I often wonder what happened to it, it's probably worth a few bucks to collectors now. Back on topic, I used to work with a guy who had one of those yellow/lime green Nokia's which used to light up on an incoming call.
Reminds me of the day when a very custom Nokia phone is the only way to go: holographic backgrounds, swapped backlights, custom casings (the term we used for the Xpress-on Covers), the fancy stickers that flash an LED light when an incoming call arrives, even custom firmware and ringtones, too (if you're handy at flashing and Logomanager)... I was even forced to buy a data cable for my 3210 and 3310 just to do custom FW and ringtones. Happy days.
Can you remember the cheap Chinese stickers that lit up When signals were present? some sold them in Sri Lanka where I live in claiming those stickers reduced the radiation of mobile phones and those illuminative stickers were sold in millions even in sri lanka....

My first mobile was a 2110, with the pull out aerial. It was replaced with a 5150, then a 6310i, which I still have, and still works. If nothing else, Nokia made great batteries, and most of them were removable. Remember those?

Nokia 6310 had a great battery life and would link via infra red to my laptop. How about the Motorola phone back in the late nineties that you can put into test mode. You could then hop on to other people's calls. Listen and or talk. Sure had a lot of good times with that when calls were analog.

I heard somewhere they made a clip on bill counter for the Motorola StarTac, it measured how long it was constantly transmitting. But it'd also probably tally up incoming calls too lol
Ah, those damn flashing aerials. Knocked the signal by at least 6dB, the really shit one, 10dB. Which made a huge difference to dropped calls. Especially in the early day of 1800 PCN There were changeable front & back covers for the 3310. The shiny metal look ones, again, killed the signal. Endless phones kept coming in the door “got no signal mate” Pop the cover off, oh look, full signal

I had a flashing antenna on my first phone which was a Maxon MN-1. later I had a Nokia 3310 and stuck with the metalic blue case it came with but some how late on ended up with an old Tigger case that had been my little sisters. The nokia with the Tigger case eventually got replaced and was stolen when my house was broken into while I was at Glastonbury. The Phone I took to Glastonbury was my first "smart phone". An Orange SPV which ran windows mobile and had clip on camera module that attached to the charging port. I remeber being really impressed at being able to email my girlfriend from my tent
Custom-tastic!! We always used to pronounce it like "knock-ia" though, not sure where you got no-key-ah from, is that the American pronunciation perhaps? If you're doing mobile phones, it might interest you and your viewers to note that when text messaging was first launched, you could only text people on the same network as you. Then came the SMS gateways, that allowed you to text a phone number on your own network and include the destination number at the start of the message, and it would route your message to the required network. The natural successor to this was the SMS-to-email gateway. I must say I used all of the above before SMS became cross-network, and eventually e-mail from a phone became normal. I got my first mobile in late 1995 - it was a Motorola MR1 flip phone on Orange - the code was 0966 before the 07- prefixes were introduced.
I have a Ulefone Armor 26 Ultra which is large, 15 Amp battery, and amateur radio on 2M and 70CM with analog and DMR, for under $500 US, and less than ComJot 26 for a higher price. My first cell phone in 2000 was a Sprint mobile for a while. I used to hear analog cell phones back then on TV tuners and amateur Hand held like the Yaesu FT 530 and when the cell dropped, losing hearing that call, with a buzz sound before the drop. 😊
I did modify my A1018s lightly with a flashing antenna and orange cover but when I went to a Nokia 3410 it got blue led mods, black crystal keypad, carbon look case with a radiation hologram
My first cellphone was a Nokia 5165 in a dark grey-ish blue. When I found out you could easily change faceplates/keypads on them, I went out and got a tiger-striped one... for obvious reasons. If Nokia made a phone just like it that could run on a 4G or 5G network, I'd get one in a cocaine heartbeat! I miss my Nokia.
I had a 3210 with data cable and serial tool to remove SIMlock. also all LEDs were replaced with blue ones. With the software, it was possible to change the operator logo (you could have a graphic for your carrier.) The 3210 had an unoccupied slot for a vibrating motor. This also could be enabled with the software to reveal ther vibrating option n the menu. And of course a custom polyphone ringtone and a transparant case!
I miss the days when everyone tried to take a stock item and pimp it in some way from
cars to game consoles.

And those were also the good old days of analogue voice channels. I remember scanning from 915mhz up to 940 or 950MHz in 12.5kHz steps. It was nuts

losing hearing that call, with
a buzz sound before the drop. 😊
Has anyone got a Nokia charger!?
NO! THE OTHER ONE! LOL😅😂
I did modify my A1018s lightly with a flashing antenna and orange cover but when I went to a Nokia 3410 it got blue led mods, black crystal keypad, carbon look case with a radiation hologram
I still have accessories for some of these phones!!!

I changed my Nokia logo to a Nike Tick with a downloaded Operator Logo. 😂this was 👍🏼 great!
I had wood grain faceplates on my 2160i and 5160 😁
My first cell phone! Never used it as a modem but did with the next phone I got (a flip phone of some variety).
Gosh that takes me back hours and hours playing snake 😅
