  • St. Paul the Hermit was the originator of the eremitical life. That is a life of solitude in the desert where one leaves all in order to find the God of all. Paintings of St. Paul the Hermit always picture him with a raven that brought him his daily bread, as well as showing him holding a human skull in his hand. St. Paul the Hermit knew that life on earth was very, very short and that eternity awaited him. The pagans of old knew that death was near so they simply ate, drank, and were merry since tomorrow they would die. But for the believer...for true Christians, i.e., Catholics, the brevity of human life kept them focused on avoiding sin and gaining heaven. In this month of November, we not only consider and pray for those who have gone before us in death, but we also ponder our own inevitable deaths. Our time is short. Eternity awaits us. Modern men pride themselves on being able to measure and calculate all created things. But eternity is beyond the power of calculation. If you add a number to eternity, you will never increase its duration. If you take any number away from eternity, you will never shorten it. There is only one step between us and eternity. We are a heart attack away from facing Christ our Judge. Our eternity will depend on how we lived our life on earth. We will either enter into eternal delights or eternal woes. In a real way, we are masters of our own eternal destiny. We will either cooperate with grace or frustrate and abuse its wondrous works. The thought of eternity is a sure light that guides us in our thinking...in our discernment...in our moral deliberations. As the Sacred Scriptures record: Remember your end, and you will never sin. For more please visit www.reginaproph... & remember to say 3 Hail Marys for the priest

In the presence of a happiness which shall last forever and ever and ever, the satisfaction of a few minutes looses more of its charm.
Eternity compares length of time to length of time, length of pleasure to length of pleasure, length of sorrow/pain to length of sorrow.
    Blessed be God!

Yes I’ve had a former gf tell me I was obsessed with Christ. “Thou shall love the lord thy God with thy whole heart, mind, soul, and strength.”
So many of us put all sorts of things above God. Brother, let us both become a consecrated religious

The ignorance of inevitable death will lead us to habitual sin. The consideration of inevitable death will aid us in fighting temptation and ultimately make us Saints.

Our priests here hardly preach about death or hell. All their sermons are prepared to make us feel good. Alas! What can we expect from post -Vatican priests!!

Did St. Paul the hermit attend Mass on Sundays. Isn’t it a mortal sin to miss Mass!

These Saints of the Desert had no Eucharist? No Sacrament of Penance? Don't we need those things?

Hermit: kind of hard to love your neighbor when you don't have any.

      Hans
I understand these saintly hermits often offer prayers and extremely challenging sacrifices for the salvation of others. In that way they are loving their neighbour.
