Nice, I just came back to San Francisco from Fiji. I was born in Suva and grew up in Nasinu for 9 years. I use to bug my dad to take to me Nausori Airport so I could look at the planes in the early 90's and he did every time. I became an AvGeek myself the 1st time I saw prop planes at this airport and the 1st time I saw a Boeing 737 it blew my mind. At that time Fiji's national airline went by Air Pacific and when I saw it's 737 pull up for the 1st time I was amazed at its sheer size. I hadn't seen anything bigger than that till I visited the U.S. for the 1st time in 1995 on board the Air Pacific 747-200, this aircraft really took me back as a child. It's sad now seeing the Airlines retire the 747's and it going out of production.
Fantastic, Paul. Loved the footage: these smaller aircraft fly at altitudes that really allow you to take great footage of the landscape. I can almost forgive the quip about Auckland 😜 Hope you had a great Christmas, and thanks for enlivening Boxing Day with your video. Cheers/Chur. 👍
As usual Paul another great video ,, I have visited Fiji a couple of times & love but last visit was a couple of years ago & I didn’t get to see as much as I wanted & a couple of people I met in Sigatoka & kept in touch with now work at Fiji Air . All good reasons for me to revisit again
An amazing aircraft that I have had to deal with in a previous SECRET life that's hidden here on RUclips. Maybe the best aspect of this aircraft is it's matched with the incredible gas turbine PT6 which when this aircraft first saw service was a new style of power plant. A reverse example of a bad airframe and engine combo is the nightmare known as the GAF Nomad...nuff said. The airline Aeropelican flew Twin Otters between Sydney to Newcastle, but these aircraft suffered from a lot of corrosion, especially on the props. Once an aluminium blade starts to get leading edge delamination from corrosion it's life cycle is very short, you may only get 1/3 of a blades 'normal' life. I think the last Aeropelican twin otters were seen was in Ansett livery and again ...nuff said. Other Twin Otters I had to deal with were crashed ones from PNG. It was amazing, engineers would patch up a crashed aircraft to fly it to Bankstown for a proper fix up. And sadly in PNG there were some very bad crashes into mountains killing all onboard on a number of times. It's an amazing honest, robust and multi role aircraft but I see that goodness is much to do with having two PT6 gas turbines. So many great aircraft use this incredibly reliable engine and to me is the quiet achiever in aviation. Same with the Rolls Royce Dart, but it was never quiet and built on the old Frank Whittle design ideas. Maybe Paul you can guess what my old job was.
I flew in quite a number of these in the Canadian Arctic. They were cargo/passenger planes more basic than what you flew in. The take off and landing capabilities on short dirt runways is just amazing.
I'm sort of having a flashback to a Northwest Airlines flight I had on this plane many years ago in the middle of winter. I don't think they have a lot of insulation because by the time we got to Minneapolis my feet were freezing. It certainly was an experience. Beautiful videography, as always! And Merry Christmas (belated)!
Great work, Paul! Huge fan of the Twotter and would certainly love to have a crack at one! It's always amusing watching them depart and just about levitate off the ground.
A delightful flight in the very reliable Twin Otter aircraft over a "Jurassic Park" like landscape. Flying at 8000 feet through light cumulus cloud with the magnificent landscape below is flying at its best. Interesting commentary and some great video footage Paul, well done again!
Beautiful trip! I also noticed a poster for Northern Air featuring their EMB-110 Bandeirante as you were walking into the airport, that would be awesome to see you fly in as well.
Another great video Paul! Always nice to catch such a rare aircraft :) The island of Fiji really looks beautiful, and all the people seem to be so friendly. Would love to visit Fiji some time! Regards, Brendan

And Auckland etc...😂😂😂😂😂😂 Love the sound of a turboprop winding up! Great video as usual Paul, I had the experience of being weighed for a flight between Horn Island and Saibai Island in the Torres Strait. Can’t remember the aircraft type, but there were 6 seats, 1 pilot and 5 passengers, I was in the right hand seat , next to the pilot. Great flight😀

Haven't been back to Fiji for nearly 40 years and you have whetted my appetite for another visit. Great vision as always Paul and some excellent facts about the aircraft!! Thanks mate and well done as always !!
It’s Here! I’ve been waiting for this Paul, thank you very much. That landing footage was spectacular and the information on the history of the twin otter was interesting indeed. Merry Christmas! 🎄
@@PaulStewartAviation Oh the drama in the early days when the prop plane would be at the start of the runway at Essendon Aerodrome, take the engines up to (it seemed) full speed and then release the brakes. Woohoo!!
Fiji looks like the jungle part of Peru. The Peruvian Air Force has 12 of this type of aircraft in service. They are very reliable and the FAP will purchase more modern versions in the future. Viking Air will be doing the overhaul on some of them this year. Thanks for sharing your video.
Bula Paul. Wow such a humble trip reporter. Who would have thought hey: an Otter? And really no air hostee. Hey paul, WOW what beautiful views , Im a mountain climber in scotland and would love to be there looks stunning. Love the aircraft's history. looks like u had a good flight , with views like that even a bad seat would make it worth it
The Twin Otter's P&W PT6 Powerplant is so versatile, it's been used since the fifties for Jet APU's... ie. Auxiliary Powerplant for electrical backup & A/C on ground esp where in-ground does not exist.

There is no excuse not to go to Tahiti with Air Taihiti Nui that co-shares with Qantas from Sydney to Papeete and do some island hopping with Tahiti's regional carrier - Air Tahiti. Almost how flying used to be relaxed, and easy to get through to the aircraft, and much more relaxed at the Terminals. Oh the days when working for the Airlines was many peoples dream jobs, even if was only a regional one.
Yep I loved the relaxed attitude although sadly there's always the risk of mischief. We forget about how many highjackings used to take places decades ago.
This reminds me of my flight from Suva to Nadi in about January 1994 in a Sunflower Airlines Twin Otter. I was weighed for the first and only time of my travels. The aircraft had at least 15 seats but many were not filled. The flight was uneventful. Two items; 1) You should have mentioned that it does NOT have a pressurized cabin, and thus is limited to 13,000 feet. 2 ) The weighting of passengers is to calculate fuel load. I first encountered weigh-in decades ago when flying from the mainland to a small Caribbean Island where the fuel prices were a lot higher and was told that they loaded fuel to meet the exact maximum allowable takeoff weight to reduce the amount of fuel they needed to buy at the higher price for the return flight.
Lol those scales reminded me of flying from Ayton to Cairns in a Cessna 402 back in 2007. My Mrs. was none too impressed at having to stand on the scales in the middle of a field, in the middle of nowhere, with an audience of wisecracking Aussies.
johnclaude R I just looked it up and apparently it’s just how they say the “d” sound, they put an n in front, and they also put an m in front of “b” sounds.

I can only ever get on one of these from Suva to Nadi if I am hungover🤪🤪 or desperately need to.... I always think it would literally just fall from the sky😱😱....

johnclaude R I just looked it up and apparently it’s just how they say the “d” sound, they put an n in front, and they also put an m in front of “b” sounds.
Cheers, glad to hear you enjoy all of the technical data that I've started including in my videos. The locals pronounce it as Nandy which had me confused initially haha.
In the Fijian lanuage 'd' can be pronounced as an 'N' hence Nadi said as Nandi
The Twin Otter from Sydney to Belmont was suxh a good (Ansett) earner ... & very scenic over Bondi. #RealPlanes *NoGearProbs #NoRetract

Small planes > big planes, don’t @ me.
I love flying in something big and comfy but there's something special about flying flying in these little turbo-props :)
And Auckland 😂 Gold

Did they weigh the pilot?
good question!
Bombardier is pronounced the French way even in English in Canada, so the second way you said it was right. :)

I hate humidity.
Jump on the scales lol
Nice vid
haha I hate humidity too so I was pleasantly surprised how tolerable the weather actually was. It was warm but not the sweatbox I expected
I can only ever get on one of these from Suva to Nadi if I am hungover🤪🤪 or desperately need to.... I always think it would literally just fall from the sky😱😱....
👍
Great Video! Very informative! I suggest to fly on Air New Zealand back to Aussie. Preferably on their 777s (200s/300s,) and their 787-9 Dreamliner. I would recommend their Premium Economy.
cheers mate. Check out my channel as I flew with NZ in the A320 NEO just a few months ago and on the 787-9 a few years ago :)
@Paul Stewart I watched the Queenstown Video a while back
Glad I got to ride one of their 747-400's when they still had them!
1:58 lmfao 😂
It’s really not even a joke
